It should be understood that the holder itself may be used for bearing reference data and the sheath 21 may or may not be attached thereto'. Also any method of removably attaching the insert card`23 tothe holder. 20 may be used.
A salient feature of my invention consists in a supporting ,stub 24hingedly connected tothe holder 20 in any way, such as by a perforated bend line 25. The supporting stub 24 is provided at each outer corner with an outstanding ear` 26 adapted to be received in a diagonally extending slot 27 formed in a` holder in any-suitable way such as by means similar supporting stub. Thus the tongues 26 are received in the slots 27 Vand form a means of joining the supporting stubs 24 together 'to form an articulated series with the sheaths 21 of the index holders lying in overlapping position one on the other and with the width of the overlapping portions of the sheaths all equal. Any other system of articulating means for the'stubs 24 such as other systems'- of -interlocking tongues and apertures may be used if desired. The entire structure so far described may be called a' pocket for the reception of the detachable insert card 23.V
The rear view of the articulated pocket series is shown in Fig. 2 and itmaybe seen ,that an adhesive may now be' applied tothe exposed portions of the supporting stubs and sald articulated series thenapplied to any supporting surface. The adhesive is then allowed to dry, and the articulated series of pockets will be securely attached to said supporting surface. I do not confine my invention to the use of adhesive in attaching the articulated pocket series to a supporting surface since an other means such as staples or stitches may e used for this purpose and said attaching means may similarly permit the deta'chment or removal of the articulated pocket seris from its supporting surface if so deslre In Figs. 3 and 4 is shown the articulated pocket series attached to one cover 28 of a small book 29 having an opposite cover 30. When the cover 30 is-folded over onto the said articulated pocket series, said series is protected from dust and wear and the book is readily portable. In the form of the device shown in Fig. 5, the articulated pocket series is shown asted or otherwise attached to the outer sur ace of a cylinder 31 having a central shaft or hub 32 adapted to berotatably supported in suitable ytrunions not shown. One of the most important frame or supporting devices for the articulated index is shown in Figs. 6-14 inclusive. In this form of the invention, the articulated pocket series is attached, as`by pasting, to a cardboard or other suitable material 33, the edges of this cardboard being then inserted under the oposed anges 34 of a sheet-metal panel 35.

Any suitable frame means may be used for hingedly supportin the anels 35 on the bearings 38, but in t e preferred form of the invention this supporting frame is approximately triangular in cross-section as shown in Figs-6 and 12. The cover 49 has an offset section 51 which is adapted to receive a flat slide bracket 52 having stop ears 53, formed at one edge thereof. This bracket 52' 10C is adapted to slide freely .between the section 51 and the cover 49, its movement in one direction being limited by a pin 54 in said cover 49. When the cover'49 is closed down into approximately horizontal Vposition as 195 shown in Fig. 7 the slide bracket 52 is manually moved toward and in contact with the pin 54. When the cover 49 is lifted to a substantially vertical position, the slide bracket 52 moves downwardly between sec- 11 tion 51 and cover 49 under the action of gravity until the lower end rests inl a pressed recess 55 formed in one triangular side 56 of the frame member 42. Thus'the slide bracket 52 cooperates with the fra-me 42 in supporting n the cover 49 conveniently at a slight angle to the side 56.

I claim:
1.A In an indexv device, a plurality of pockets each having a liingedly connected stub portion, means for connecting said stub poirtions togetherv to lform an articulated series of pockets having overlapping edges, and apanel adapted to support said series of pockets.

In an index device, a pair of covers hingedly -connected together', anindex card holder havingastub -portion hingedly connected thereto, means forv connecting a plurality of said stub portions together to form an articulated series of holders having overlapping edges, said stub portions `being' pasted to one of said covers. 3

In an index device, an index card holder, a stub portion hingedly connected to said holder, said stub portion having atongue and'aperture adapted to interlock with other similar stub portions to form an articulated series of 's/tub portions and holders with overlapping edges, a connecting strip of material pasted to said stub portions, a frame member, and a panel mounted in said frame mem-pv ber for hinging movement and adapted to support said strip of material and holders so that said holders may be vrocked about the hinged stub portions and also-about the panel hinge.

In an index dep/icc, a frame member, a plurality oflindex panels and covers hinged to said frame member, one of said covers being adapted to lie flat on a horizontal surface, and a bracket slidably mounted 0n a second of said covers adapted to slide into frame-engaging position to maintain said cover in an open position.

In a series of index devices', each device comprising a frame member of triangular shape, a plurality of covers and index panels hingedly connected to said frame member, said frame member being adapted to be inclined relative'to said panels and covers so that the edges of said panels are in overlapping position, said index devices being adapted to be superposed with the covers of adjacent devices in face-to-face position, and a label member on the frame member of each index device Which is visible When said covers are in face-to-face position.

A card holder for visible indexes comprising a sheet formed to provide a holder -portion and a stub portion on one marginal edge of the holder portionhingeable relative thereto, means on said holder portion for surface, whereby said panels are positioned over said surface in superimposed relation, said frame member being. formed for movement about one edge on the supporting surlface for arranging said faoe in angular relation thereto, thereby moving the panels to expose the free edges thereof in stepped index relation.
