Description
June 7, 1932. P c. GIBSON 3Q RECEPTACLE OPENER Filed Sept. 28, 1931 INVEN OR M ATTORNEY Patented June 1932 PRESTON GESON, E GILLESPIE, ILLINOIS 'REGEPTACLE OPENER Application filed September 28, 1931. Serial No. 565,679.
This invention comprehends an opener for paper receptacles, and embodies the use of a flexible element threaded through prearranged openings in the receptacle adjacent a the corners thel eof, so that when the free exposed end of the element ispulled upon, the element will neatly sever the top of the receptacle therefrom along a definite line through said openings in consecutive order.
The nature and advantages ofthe invention will be better understood when the following detail description is read in connection with I the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination and 16 arrangement of parts as claimed In the drawing forming part of this application like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and where- '111:
2 Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the normal position of the flexible element.
Figure 2 is a similanview showing the receptacle partly open. n
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view showing the 25 receptacle further opened. 1 Figure 4 is a sectional view looking fro the under side of the top showing the normal arrangement of the element.
Figure 5 is a similar fragmentary view with the top of the receptacle partly severed.
Referring to the drawing in detail indicates a paper receptacle including a top 11. In accordance with the present invention each side and end of the receptacle is provided with a pair of spaced openings 12 adjacent the corners, the openings in the sides being arranged adjacent the diagonal corners with the openings in the ends similarly located with relatiorli to the remaining corners of the receptac e.
The opener consists of a flexible element of any suitable character arranged on the under side of the top 11 and threaded'through the openings 12 in a manner so that when the free exposed end 13 of this element is pulled upon, the element will neatly severthe top of the receptacle therefrom along definite lines. One end of the element is passed through the ope ings 12 and one side of the receptacle and tled as at 14 to form a loop construction and arrangement it will be mani- The element is then extended transversely of the package and passed through the openings 12 in one end wall as shown in Figure 1, a portion of the element being exposed at this corner of the receptacle from where the element is extended toward the opposite end of the receptacle and threaded through the openings 12 of the opposite side wall, and then extended toward the first mentioned side of the receptacle and threaded through the openings in the other end wall, from where .the element is passed in the direction of the loop 15 and/has its free end passed through one of the openings in which the loop 15 is arranged. It will be noted that a portio of the flexible element is exposed at each cor er of the receptacle where it is threaded thro h each pair of openings 12. By virtue of this fest that when the free end 13 of this flexible element is pulled upon, the element will sever thetop 11 along one edge in the direction of one end wall as illustrated in Figure 2, and during acontinued pull on said element the top willbe severed along the edges of the receptacle through the openings in consecutive order. After the top has been severed along one side edge as shown in Figure 2, it will then be severed along one endedge, thence along the opposite side edge, and finally along the opposite end edge. While it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readilyunderstood, I desire to have it known that I do not limit myself to what is herein illustrated or described, and that such changes may be re sorted to when desired as fall Within the scope of what is claimed. What is claimed is: I 1. A paper receptacle including a top and spaced pairs of openings in each side and end along the edges thereof, and a' flexible ele ment located beneath the top of the receptacle and threaded through said openings with 9 a portion exposed adjacent each corner of the receptacle, one end of said element being secured to the receptacle adjacent one corner thereof, and the other free end projecting fromthe receptacle and adapted to be pulled upon to sever said top from the receptacle along definite lines.
2. A paper receptacle including a top an spaced pairs of openings in each side and end adjacent the corners thereof, the openings of the respective sides and ends being located adjacent the dia onal corners, and a flexible elemient located eneath the top and threaded through said openings in consecutive order, with a portion of the element exposed adjacent each corner of the receptacle, one end of the element being looped through one pair of openings and secured to the receptacle at the adjacent corner, and the other free end of the element projecting from the receptacle through one of the last mentioned pairs of openings and adapted to he pulled upon to sever the top along definite lines.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
PRESTQN G. GIBSON.
