UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CYRUS LEVIS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED SASH LIFT AND FASTENER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,140, dated January 9, 1877; application filed December 19, 1876.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OYRUs LEvIs, of Philadelphia', in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Sash Lift and Fastener; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
, clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a broken perspective of a window frame and sash with my invention applied thereto. Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical transverse sections of my invention.
My invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts of a combined sash lift and fastener, the lift being formed or provided with a hook or latching device, and suitable spring for automatically fastening the sash, to which the lift is attached, when such sash is down or closed, as hereinafter more fully described and definitely claimed. I
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A designates a bracket or plate having openings (1 a for the passage of screws by which it is fastened to the sash B. Said plate is formed with ribs or ears a a, which alford bearings for a pin or shaft, 0, which forms the pivot or axle for the lever D. The upper end of said lever is formed with a hook or sash lift, d, while its lower end terminates in a latch or fastener, d. E shows a flat metal spring (for which a coiled or other equivalent spring may be substituted) riveted to the lever D at e and impinging against the plate A. The object of said spring is to cause the latch end of the lever to be automatically pressed inward or toward the plate, while the upper end of said lever is by the same means pressed outwardly. F represents a plate intended to be fastened to the window-frame strip G flush with the inner edge of said strip, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. Said plate is formed with an opening, f, through which the latch 01 passes when the sash B is down.
The operation is briefly as follows: When the sash is drawn down the latch d automatically enters the openingfin the keeper F, and engages therewith, as shown, the sash being thereby firmly fastened. When it is desired to raise the sash the hook at is taken hold of in the usual manner. The motion of lifting being exerted the latch 11 becomes disengaged from the keeper F, and the sash is thereby released from its fastening and free to be raised.
In practice two of these devices, occupying the positions which sash lifts or knobs usually do, should be employed for each lower sash of a window.-
What I claim as my invention is- The bracket A, having cars a a, sustaining the pivoted lever D, having its upper end made to form a sash-lift, d, and its lower end to form a latch or fastener, d, and spring E, said parts being combined and arranged to operate automatically, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 4th day of December, 1876.
CYRUS LEVIS.
