Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QEEICE6 JOSEPH J BARTLETT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN BATTENING FOR ROOFS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185.883, dated January 2, 1877 application tiled July 3, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH J. BARTLETT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Battening, which invention is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents a transverse vertical section. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an improvement on that kind of battening which is described 'in Letters Patent No. 156,789, dated November l0, 1874, and which consists of a metallic tongue and gutter-pieces bent to form a gutY ter, the edges of which extend at angles of one hundred and twenty degrees, more or less, from the sides to form tongues,-Which catch in grooves in the adjacent boards.
This battening fuliills the desired object to perfection; but the production of the oblique recesses for the reception of the' tongues of the gutter-pieces requires extra labor, since two operations are required, one for producing the recesses for the reception of the gut ters, and another for producing the grooves for the reception of the tongues.
My present improvement consists in a inetallic tongue and gutter-pieces bent to form a central gutter and corrugated tongues, which extend from the edges of the gutter in horizontal planes, and which catch in recesses in the adjacent boards, so that the recesses for the reception of the gutters, and those for the reception of the tongues, can be produced by one operation, and that when the boards shrink beyond the center gutter two additional gutters are presented to carry off the rain.
In the drawing, the letter A designates my tongue and gutter-piece, which is constructed of sheet metal with a central gutter, a, and with corrugated tongues b, extending from the edges of the central gutter in horizontal planes. The boards B B, which are to be jointed together, are provided with grooves or recesses c, for the reception of the guttcra, and with other grooves or recesses d for the reception of the tongues b.
The grooves c and d in each ot' the boards can be readily made by the action ot' one and the same tool in one operation, and the depth of the grooves d is such that when the gutterpiece is adjusted between two boards, and those boards are pushed together, the tongues b are brought to bear against the inner ends ot' said grooves, and the tongue and gutterpiece is compressed.
When the boards shrink, the tongue and gutter-piece expands, and the rain which passes down between the joints ot' the adjacent boards is caught in the gutters a. If the boards should shrink beyond this central gutter, two additional gutters will be presented to carry oft' the rain.
I disclaim everything shown and described in the above-named patent No. 156,789.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A tongue and gutter-piece, A, bent to form a central gutter, a, and corrugated tongues b, extending from the edges of the central gutter in horizontal planes to catch in grooves c d in the adjacent boards, shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 21st day of February, 1876.
JOS. J. BARTLETT.
