SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed May T, 1887.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OLIVER M. Mnarz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nest Salem, in the county of \Vaync and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Roofing Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in devices to prevent snow from sliding from the roofs of houses; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a roof provided with my improved snow-detaining devices. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same, taken on the line a: w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail perspective view of one form of my improved snow-detaining device. Fig. at is a similar view of a modified form thereof.
A represents a snow-detaining device, which is made of sheet or plate metal, and is provided with a vertical flange-plate, B, the ends of which are turned outward at right angles to form brace-arms O. From the lower edge of the plate B project flat bearing-arms D, which extend in the opposite direction 0 from the brace-arms C. The upper edge of the flange-plate D may be fluted or scalloped,
as shown, or given any other preferred ornamental configuration, thereby causing the snow-detaining devices to present a sight] y ap- 3 5 pearanee when applied to a roof.
The operation of applying my improved snow-detaining device to a roof is as follows: W'hile applying the shingles or slates a to the roof in the usual manner the device is placed 40 transversely on one row of shingles or plates, so that the flange-plate B will extend across several of the shingles or plates and the arms D will project upward on the roof beyond the inner ends of the shingles or slates, and are 4 5 secured to the roof by means of nails or screws, which extend through openings E,with which the said arms are provided at their outer ends. The next row of shingles or slates is then secured with their lower edges resting against the inner side of the flange-plate B, and their lower sides arranged upon the arms E, thereby entirely covering the said arms Patent No. 369,257, dated August 30, 1887.

and only enabling the flangeplate B and the brace-arms 0 thereof to be seen. Any suitable number of the detaining devices may be attached to the roof in this manner.
The operation of my invention is as follows: As the snow falls on the roof it covers the devices A, and the flange-plates thereof become embedded in the snow, and the snow thereby 6o prevented from sliding oil the roof in an ava lanche, but offers no impediment to the escape of water resulting from the snow being melted during a thaw.
In Fig. i 1 illustrate a modified form of my 6 invention, in which the flange-plate B is pr0- vided on its lower edge with a horizontal base-plate, F, formed integrally with the flange-plate by bending a metallic sheet at right angles. In this form of my invention the arms B are made of separate pieces of sheet metal and are pivotally connected at their inner ends to the upper side of the base-plate F by means of rivets Gr.
Having thus described my invention, I elaim-- 1. The detent to prevent snow from sliding from the roof of a house, and having a vertical plate, B, and arms D, extending at right angles from the said plate and adapted to be secured to the roof between the'shingles or slates thereon, substantially as described.
2. A snow-detaining device comprising the vertical plate B, the brace-arms O, projecting from the lower or front side of the plate, and the arms D, projecting from the rear or upper side of the plate, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
8. As a new article of manufacture, the snow-detaining device made of sheet metal 0 and comprising the detent-plate B, having its ends bent outward at right angles to form brace-arms O, and the flat-arms D, pivoted to the lower edge of the detent-plate and extend ing upward therefrom, substantially as described.
