BUTTER-DISH.
' N.185,746 Patented nec. 26,1876.
THEGRAPMIC CTI-N56 UNETED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WESTEL E. HAWKINS, OF WALLINGFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO SIMPSON, HALL, MILLER St CO., OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTER-DISHES.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. l 85,746, dated December 26, 1876; application tiled December 4, 1876.
To all. whom t't may concern:
Be it known that I, WEsTEL E. Hawkins, of Wallingford, in the county of New Haven and State ot' Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Butter-Dishes,
of which the following is a specification Figure l is a side view of my improved butterdish closed, part ot' the bail being broken away, and the catch being shown in section. F ig. 2 is a cross-section of the same opened.
Similar` letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object ot' this. invention is to improve the construction of metal butter-dishes, so that they may be uncovered without detaching the covers, and which shall be simple in construction, convenient in use, and neat and ornamental in appearance.
The invention consists in a butter-dish in which the cover is made in two parts or halves, pivoted at their angles to'the opposite sides ofthe body of said dish, so that they may be turned down upon the outside of said body; in the combination ot' the segmental gearwheels with the angles of the parts ofthe cover, to cause said parts to move together upon their pivots; and in the combination ot' the pin, the sliding knob, and the projection with the edges of the parts of the cover, as hereinafter fully described.
A is the foot or pedestal of the dish, which may be made ot' any desired shape, and ornamented to any desired extent and in any desired style. 'Io the top ot' the pedestal A is attached the lower halt or body B of the dish, which may be made in the shape ot' a half-sphere, or ot' any other desired form, and around the edge otl which is formed a ange or shoulder to receive and support the plate C, upon which the butter is placed. Upon the opposite sides ot' the upper part ot' the body B are formed ornamental ears D, to which the ends of the bail E are attached. F is the cover, which is made in the shape of a half-sphere, or in any other desired shape, to correspond with the shape ot' the lower part or bottom B. The cover F is made of a little greater diameter than the body B,
and in two equal parts or halves, which parts are pivoted at their angles to the lower part B. To the angles of the parts of the cover F are attached two segmental gear-wheels, G, the teeth otl which mesh into each other, so that the two parts may be raised and lowered together, and so that both parts may be raised by raising either. The parts ot' the cover F, by being made of a little greater diameter than the body B, and by being pivoted a little out ofthe central vertical plane ot said body B, will pass down upon the outside of said body until their lower edges rest against the opposite sides of the pedestal A, having their upper edges about upon a level with the edge ot the said body B. Upon the middle part of' the upper edge ot' one ot' the parts of the cover F is formed a pin, H, upon which is placed a knob, I. The knob I has a slight longitudinal movement upon the pin H, and its lower end has a ring-flange formed upon its lower end to receive a projection, J, formed upon the center ot' the upper edge of the other part ot' the cover F, so that the parts of the cover may be fastened and unt'astened by moving the knob I up and down slightly upon the pin H.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A butter-dish in which the cover F is made in two parts or halves, pivoted at their angles to the opposite sides ot' the body B of said dish, so that they may be turned down upon the outside of said body, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination of the segmental gear wheels G with the angles of the parts ot' the cover F, to cause said parts to move together upon their pivots, substantially' as herein shown and described.
3. The combination ofthe pin H, the sliding knob I, and the projection J with the edges of the parts ot' the cover F, substantially as herein shown and described.
WES'IEL E. HAWKINS.
