H. D. MONAOHESI.
GRIDIRON, m.
No. 498,984. Patented June 6, 1893.
/' I W, WWII/x1111! INVENTOR: M gm y Alzomeys,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HANNAH D. MONACl-IESI, OF NEW YORK, N; Y.
GRIDIRON, 80c.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,984, dated June 6, 1893.
Application filed July 25, 1892. Serial No. 441,092. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HANNAH D. MONAOHESI, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gridirons and Analogous Utensils, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gridirons and analogous utensils, as broilers, toasters, and the like, particularly of the class having leaves adjustable relatively to the handle and aims to provide certain improvements in devices of this character which will be hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one adaptation of my invention,Figure 1 is a perspective view of a gridiron constructed according to the preferred form of my invention, the parts being shown in the fiat or normal position, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section thereof, the parts being shown in the position for use in a stove hole, the stove hole and fire being indicated.
.Referring to the drawings I will now describe the preferred form of my invention as applied to an ordinary gridiron.
Let A indicate the gridiron as a whole, B B the leaves thereof, 0 the handle for the lower leaf, D the handle for the upper leaf, E the locking link, F an auxiliary frame, lthe stove hole of a stove, and J the fire therein.
The gridiron maybe of any usual construction having one or more leaves B. The leaves B here shown are constructed of outer wire frames a and intermediate wires 1) as usual. They are hinged together at their outer ends by any suitable hinge, as K K, those shown consisting of twisted wires overlapping the respective frames.
The handles 0 and D may be of any desired construction, but should be connected adj ustably to their respective leaves to be movable to a plane angular to that occupied by the leaves. Preferably each is pivotally connected to its leaf on a horizontal axis, as shown at c and d, this being accomplished in this construction by bending the ends of the respective handles over the respective frames at of the leaves. Preferably the handle D is constructed of a piece of wire, bent upon itself and connected at its free ends pivotally to the frame of the upper leaf B. Preferably the end h of the handle D the latter can be raised and swung with its leaf B outwardly to open the gridiron. To close it the handle is turned against the loop or support 9 and the link E is slid downwardly until it has forced the handles together as far as the thickness of the material between the leaves will permit, whereupon it will retain this position and prevent separation of the leaves until it is slid back.
Preferably according to myinvention I provide an auxiliary frame or member for convenience in manipulating the gridiron and retaining it in its several positions. This may be variously constructed and applied, but preferably I construct it in the form of an auxiliary frame F, which as shown consists of awire frame, having an enlarged body portion M surrounding the leaves B, and a contracted handle portion N terminating in a handle piece 0, the handle portion inclosing the handles O D. Preferably the frame F is pivoted to the leaves of the gridiron, as shown, by two eyes P, one at each side, which engage preferably the frame a of the lower leaf B. Preferably these eyes are wire links about the center of which the wire of the frame F is coiled to preserve them in position, and by preference they are constructed with large eyes Q externally of the frame and disposed at right angles to the eyes P, whereby they may be utilized for hanging the utensil up when not in use. Preferably a sliding connection is provided between one or both the handles 0 D andthe handle portion N of the frame F. In the construction shown this consists of the slide L, which is a wire bar coiled at its ends about the respective wires of the handle portion M of the frame F and engaged near its middle by the coils f of the handle 0. The handle portion is constructed with parallel sides to permit the movement of the slide L and beyond the limit of its maximum movement the handle end 0 is constructed in a curve convenient to the grasp.
In operation, with the gridiron shown, the substance to be treatedbein g fastened between the leaves by sliding the link E over the handle 0 D, the leaves are then adjusted to the proper angularity relative to the handles 0 D to enable the leaves to be held substantially parallel with the fire. This is accomplished preferably by pushing down the slide L and distorting the leaves relatively to their handles, first to the position shown in Fig. 2, where the parts may be left until it is desired to treat the other side of the material held between the leaves, whereupon the parts will be shifted to the reverse position. In each position the utensil is adapted to be inserted into the hole in the top of a stove in suchmanner that its leaves will be substantially parallel with the fire while its handle will;
project upwardly above the stove. The handle end 0 of the frame serves as a convenient handle for the utensil.
It will be seen that my invention provides an improved gridiron or analogous utensil, convenient and effective in use and of simple construction.
It will be understood that my invention can be variously availed of and applied in whole or in part, without departing from its essential features, and thatI do not limit myself to the specific details of construction hereinbefore set forth.
The details of construction may be modified in such manner as circumstance may dietate.
What I claim is, in gridirons or analogous utensils, the following defined novel features and combinations, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, namely:
1. In a gridiron or analogous utensil, the combination with a leaf, and its handle, of an auxiliary frame pivotally connected to said leaf and surrounding the latter and its handle, and a connection between said frame and handle constructed to permit the movement of the one relatively to the other.
2. In a gridiron or analogous utensil, the combination with a leaf, as B, a handle therefor, a frame, as F, and a slide, as L, connecting said handle to said frame, constructed substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a gridiron or analogous utensil, the leaves as B B, handles as O D connected thereto pivotally, and constructed the one with a support, as g, and the other to act against said support, and the link as E embracing said handle for locking them together, whereby said handles can be tilted relatively to said leaves while the latter are in the closed position.
4. In a gridiron or analogous utensil, the combination with the leaves, as B, and their handles, as O D, of the frame F pivotally connected to one of the leaves, having the handle portion N and the handle end O,and the slide L movably engaging said handle portion and connected to one of the handles of said leaves, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HANNAH D. MONAOI-IESI.
