ANGELINE UNDERWOOD.
SPRING PILLOW. N0.185,707. Patented Dec. 26,1876.
INVENTOII:
THE GRAPH [C CO. ",Y
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
ANGELINE UNDERWOOD, OF OARROLLTON, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING-PILLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 185,707, dated December 26, 1876; application filed September 30, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANGELINE UNDER- WOOD, of Garrollton, in the county of Greene and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Spring-Pillow, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a top view of my improved pillow. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on line a; w in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line y y in Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention consists of a skeleton frame composed of longitudinal curved spring-ribs of wire, and transverse stays attached to a square frame, and backed up by one or more elliptic and spiral springs, and the whole covered in a suitable manner.
The object of the invention is to provide a pillow which shall retain its form and be cooler and more comfortable in use than those of ordinary manufacture.
A is a frame ofstout wire, to which the longitudinal and transverse ribs are attached, and which gives form to the edge of the pillow. B B, &c., are curved longitudinal ribs of springwire, that are attached to the frame A by eyes formed on the ends of the ribs which embrace the wire forming the ends of the frame. Transverse stays a are wired to each of the ribs B, and attached to the sides of the frame A in the same way that the ribs are attached to the ends. 0 is an elliptic spring, placed inside of the ribs B, and attached to the sides of the frame A. Spiral springs D are placed between the sides of the pillow, and are attached to the stays a, and press the ribs B outward.
The ribs B, stays a, and spring (3 are held in place on the frame A by winding the frame with wire on each side of them, or by attaching washers that bear upon each side of the ribs, springs, and stays.
It will be seen that the eyes formed on the ribs and stays form ajoint with the frame A, so that the parts may move freely without danger of breaking. The frame or skeleton thus formed is covered in any desirable way. A pillow made in this manner is cool, cleanly, and much more pleasant to use than the ordinary stuffed ones. It is specially adapted for sick-rooms and hospitals, as it is readily aired and cleaned.
When the pillow is to be used merely for a sham, the spiral springs may be omitted.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the frame A, spring-ribs B, stays a, elliptical spring 0, and spiral springs D, substantially as herein shown and described.
ANGELINE UNDERWOOD.
