I. B. E, OF STUT'IGART, GERMANY HEM: FOLDER FOB SEWING MACHINES Application filed April 29, 1930, Serial No. 448,299, and in Germany June 12, 1929.
' 1o cular article may be completely stitched.
In the drawings I Figure 1 is a view partly in section and partly in plan showing a portion of a machine having the invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. r
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view through the folder showing the parts in position for forming the hem fold and guiding the tape.
Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the parts se arated.
ig. 6 is a transverse sectional view through the finished hem pocket.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view showing the forming of a hem pocket in a circular article and the position of the needles and the tape guiding member of the folder.
The invention is directed to a folder for forming a hem pocket in a body fabric and is preferably so constructed as to fold the edge portion of a fabric section back on itself and so as to direct said. folded fabric section to the needles for stitching the edge portion of the infolded part of the fabric section to the body portion of the fabric section. The folder consists of two sections one of which extends: into the other so that the fabric as it passes through the folder will be infolded in the manner stated. The inner section is mounted so that it may be withdrawn from the outer section for t e purpose of closing the hem ocket in a circular article. The inner member is provided with a guiding recess for a tape, which guiding recess is so disposed that the tape is inserted in the pocket as it is formed in a predetermined position relative to the lines of stitching-which unite the infolded portion of the fabric to the body portion of the fabric in the forming of the hem pocket. This guiding recess for the tape is so positioned in the inner member that one side of the recess is open and in a direction so that when the inner member is withdrawn from the folder, it will be released from the tape.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the invention is shown as applied to a sewing machine having a cylindrical work supporting arm 1. It will be understood, however, that the invention may be applied to any type of sewing machine. The sewing machine is provided with two needles 2, 2 and associated with the needles is a complemental stitch forming device. The material is held on the work support by a presser foot 3. The fabric section in which ahem pocket is formed is indicated at F in the drawings. This fabric section is turned back u on itself as indicated at F to form a hem poo et. As shown in the drawings, it is turned underneath. A tape .T is inserted in this formed hem pocket. The hem pocket is closed by stitching. As shown in the drawings, there are two needle threads 02, n and a single looper thread Z which joins the needle thread loops and thus secures and covers the edge of the fabric section which is infolded. The folder for guiding and infolding the edge of the fabric consists of an outer folder member 4 which is provided with a base plate 5 secured to a bracket 6 by screws 7, 7. The folder has a portion 4a overlying the fabric section and a portion 46 underlying the inturned portion of the fabric.
Cooperating with the outer folder member is an inner folder member' 8. This inner folder member is adapted to extend into the outer folder member between the parts 4a and 4b and when it is moved to its extreme inner position it is spaced sufliciently from the outer folder membelfso as to form a guiding and folding recess forthe fabric F. The member 46 is preferably recessed so as to form an edge guide for the'- infolded part of the fabric.
The member is providedwith an opening which exposes. to view the fabric passing through the folder and also renders it accessible for the proper positioning of the same in the folder.
The inner member 8 of the folder is provided with a recess 9, the upper and lower walls of which are parallel with the upper and lower faces of the folder and this recess is open at the inner face of the folder. WVhen the inner folder member is placed in the outer folder member for forming a hem pocket this recess serves as a guiding recess for the tape which is to be inserted in the hem pocket.
The tape is shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings as passing through this guiding recess. This tape may be a non-elastic tape or an elastic tape depending upon the character of the article that is being made. When the inner folder member is withdrawn from the outer folder member the tape is released.
The bracket 6 on which the outer folder member is mounted is provided with arms 10, 10 which are curved to conform to the shape of the work supplorting arm 1. These arms are provided wit slots 11, 11 through which screws may be passed for securing the bracket to the work arm. The folder member 8 is mounted on a supporting shank 12. This supporting shank rests on the bracket 6 and is provided with a portion 13 extending downwardly through a slot 14 in the bracket 6.
Connected to this shank portion 12 is a plate 15. Said plate is secured to the shank member b means of a bolt 16 and a spring 17 is placed etween the head of the bolt and the plate 15 so that the parts are caused to yieldmgly grip the bracket 6 and remain in a set osition.
Attached to the plate 15 is a rod 18 which extends through a suitable guiding lug 19 and is provided with a hand piece 20. -A spring 21 encircling the rod and bearing against the hand piece and lug yieldingly holds the inner folder member in its operative position in the outer folder member. The shank engages the end of the slot 14 and limits the inward movement of the inner folder member.
In Fig. 7 of the drawings the circular article is indicated at A. The fabric is inturned at F to form the hem pocket. A tape T is inserted in'this hem pocket. The needles are indicated at 2, 2 and the lines of stitching are indicated at n, 1. When the point 1s,
reached indicated by the line zv-w then the inner member of the hem folder is withdrawn. At this time the beginning of the stitching which was at the line y-y is approaching the stitching oint and is about to pass into the outer fol er member. When the inner member is retracted it releases the tape and permits the connecting stitches which were originally formed to pass through the folder and the complete closing of the hem pocket.
While the inner member is shown as provided with a recess facing inwardly, it will be Y understood that the recess may be otherwise disposed and shaped; the essential feature being that the recess will guide the ta and prevent its being deflected so as to be stltched', and at the same time said folder member can be very quickly released from the tape merely by withdrawing the folder member. While there has been shown a specific structure for withdrawing the inner folder member, it will be understood that this mechanism may be quickly changed without departing from the spiritof the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A hem folder comprisingan outer folder member, an inner folder member coo erating therewith for forming a hem poc et in the edge portion of a fabric, said inner folder member being adapted to be moved from within the outer folder member for the completing of the hem pocket in a circular article,
said inner folder member having a guiding means for directing and positioning a tape into the hem pocket, said guiding means being ca' able of releasing the ta e when the inner older member is retracte 2. A hem folder comprising an outer folder member, an inner folder member cooperating therewith for formin a hem pocket in the edge portion of a. fa'ric, said inner folder member being adapted to be moved from within the outer folder member for the completing of the hem pocket in a circular article, said inner folder member having a guiding recess formed therein for guiding and directing a tape in a predetermined position in the hem pocket, said guiding recess being formed so as to release the tape when the inner folder member is retracted.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
KURT SCHNURRBUSCH.
