[Also in Division A3] A sewing machine is provided with means for folding a tubular strip about an edge of a workpiece and comprising a fixed guide provided with fins and positioned near the presser foot, and a movable guide in the form of a longitudinally-movable bar terminating in a pair of spaced-apart branches, the arrangement being such that when the tubular strip is threaded on the bar and the latter is moved to an operative position, the fins enter the space between the branches and fold the tubular strip into U-shape for embracing the workpiece edge. The fixed guide 16 is secured by a flange 18 to the sewing machine base, and has a work-supporting surface 16<SP>1</SP>, a pair of vertically-spaced initial guiding fins 20, a pair of intermediate vertically-spaced folding fins 21 and a final horizontal centrally-positioned folding fin 22. The movable guide 17 is in the form of a bar 23 slidable on rollers between fixed plates and formed at its inner end with a pair of vertically-spaced branches 24. In use bar 23 is retracted and a tubular portion of a knitted binding strip 40, having a flat extension 43, is threaded thereon. Bar 23 is then moved to the operative position in which it is held by a spring catch. During this movement the fins 21, 22 pass between the branches 24 to fold the tubular portion into two arms 48 which embrace the edge of a knitted fabric workpiece 44 supported on surface 16<SP>1</SP>. Arms 48 are sewn to said edge by a seam 42 under the main pole (10) of the presser foot 6. The adjacent body of the workpiece passes under an auxiliary pivoted sole 11 biased downwardly by a wire spring 12.
