MERWIN DAVIS, OF NEW YORK, N.' Y., ASSIGNOR TO PETER G. BERGEN, OF BROOKLYN, NE\V YORK.
PRINTING-PRESS.
Speccation of Letters Patent No. 18,567, dated November S, 1857'.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, MERWLN DAVIS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing-Presses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side view of my invention. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal vertical section of ditto taken in the line Fig. 3. Fig. 3, is a plan or top view of ditto. Fig. 4, is a detached plan or top view of the vibrating rails by the operation of which the rolling pressure segment is raised from the form during its backward movement over the same and allowed to descend and. bear upon it during its forward movement at which time the impression is given. Fig. 5 is a detached view of the ink-distributing device.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several gures.
This invention consists in the employment or use of a reciprocating rolling pressure segment for giving the impressions, said segment being counterpoised and arranged as will be hereinafter described whereby the necessary impression is given the sheets by a simple contrivance, one working with but little friction and requiring but a comparatively small expenditure of power.
The invention also consists in a peculiar arrangement of the device for feeding the sheets to the pressure segment and also in a peculiar arrangement of fly for removing the printed sheets therefrom, the above parts being used in connection vwith the pressure segment and operating conjointly therewith as will be hereinafter described.
The invention also consists in a peculiar means employed for operating the vibrating ink-distributing rollers, and also in a novel device for raising the pressure segment free from the form while passing over the form in its backward movement to receive the blank sheets.
The invention further consists in using in connection with the device for raising the pressure segment a peculiar means for preventing the lingers or nippers from acting upon or grasping the blank sheets from the feed board, the parts being so arranged that they may operate when desired without performing the functions assigned them.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a rectangular frame in the lower part of which a shaft B is placed ltransversely. This shaft hasv a driving pulley O at one end and a pinion D is placed on the opposite end. The pinion D, gears into a wheel E which is placed on one end of the shaft E of the large ink roller F, the upper partV of the periphery of said roller being at the front or outer end of the ink plate or bed Gr', see Figs. 2 and 3.
H is a shaft the lower end of which works on a pin or rod (a) as a center, said pin or rod being at the lower part and at one side of the frame. This shaft is connected by a rod I, with the wheel E near its periphery. The upper part of the shaft H has a vertical slot made through it, in which slot the journal (c) of a segment J is fitted.
J is the segment of a hollow cylinder the face (K) serving as the pressure surface by which the impression is given the sheets. This segment is formed by having radial arms (C2) at each side of the face (7c)v and the ends of the arms (c2) have treads or segments (d) on them which extend a considerable distance each side of the face (la) as shown plainly in Fig. 2. The outer edges of the treads or segments (d) are provided each with a guide strip or flanch (e) which projects down by the outer sides of ways (f) over which the treads work, said ways being on the upper surfaces of the top longitudinal bar (g) of the frame A. Between the upper ends of the arms (c2) a rectangular box (71,) is placed. This box may be of metal and with the arms (c2) and treads (d) may be cast in one piece. The box (7L) is loaded or has a certain weight placed on it, which weight should bear a certain proportion to the weight of the arms (c2) and face (7c) as will be hereinafter described.
From the above description of parts it will be seen that when the shaft B is rotated a rolling reciprocating motion will be given the segment J through the medium of the journal (c) shaft H, connecting rod I and wheel E which wheel receives its motion Vfrom the driving shaft B through pinion D shown at (b3) the opposite ends of said straps being attached to one end of the treads (el) (d) as shown at (b4).
K is a rod. the lower end of which is pivoted to the lower part of the frame A at The upper end of this rod has a horizontal rod (7c) connected with it and to the back end of this rod a chain is attached, said chain passing through one of the ways (f) and being attached to one side of a rail (m) which rests on one of the bars (g) of the frame A. A rail rests on each bar (g) and the two rails are connected by cross ties which pass through eyes (0) attached to ,a bed L on the frame A. Around the ties and. between the two eyes (0) (o) of each tie a spiral spring (p) is placed. One end of the springs bearing against one of the eyes, and the opposite ends bearing against .collars (g) placed on the ties. The springs (p) (p) have a tendency to keep the rails (m) (m) in line with or directly underneath grooves (11) (1) made in the under surfaces of the treads (cl) as shown by the red lines in Fig. 3.
Against the rod K or against a roller (s) attached thereto a cam (t) on the shaft E works. The form of this cam is distinctly shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2, and the cam is so placed upon its shaft that when the segment J is moving in thedirection indicated by arrow (Z) the rails will be in line with the grooves (1") in the treads (d) and allow the face (7c) of the segment to rest or bear upon the form M shown 1n red which is placed and secured on the bed L, see Fig. 2, the segment giving the 1mpression to the sheet when moving as above shown, when the segment moves in the opposite direction as indicated by arrow (2) the cam (t) bears against the roller (s) on the rod K, and said rod through the medium of the rod (7c) and chain (Z) causes the rails (m) to be drawn or moved underneath flanches on the treads (d), so that when the segment is moving as indicated by arrow (2) its face (7c) will be raised above the form M.
On the journal (c) of the segment J the upper end of an arm N is placed, and a corresponding or similar arm N is placed on a journal or pivot (c) at the opposite side of the segment. The lower ends of the arms N, N, are attached to rods (o) (fu) at the opposite ends of sliding carriage O, which is allowed to work freely back and forth on the ways, (f) This reciprocating motion is given the carriage O in consequence of its attachment to the segment J. A rod P is attached to the carriage O, said rod having the usual ngers or nippers attached to it and also having a spiral spring placed upon it at one end,
Said spring having a tendency to keep the ends of the fingers down upon horizontal bars (e) which are attached to the carriage. On one end of the rod P a short arm (ax) is attached, and (bx) is a vertical spring plate attached to the carriage and. having its upper end directly under the short arm (ax), this spring plate (bx) retains or holds up the fingers or nippers from the bars (e) while moving with segment J in the direction -indicated by arrow (l).
Q is a bar the ends of which are attached to arms R, R, the upper ends of which are connected to the arms N, N, as shown at (cx). The bar Q rests upon the edges of the horizontal bars (z).
S, T, are two rods or shafts one of which T is placed in the upper part of the frame A and the other S attached to one side of the box (h) on the segment J. The shaft T has two arms (dx) (dx) attached to it, and between the upper or outer ends of these arms a shaft (ex) is fitted or placed, said shaft having a spiral spring (fx) upon it, and also nippers (gx) any proper number Ibeing used which are controlled or regulated by a spring (Lx) in the usual way. The
shaft S has two short arms (ix) attached to it and these arms are pivoted to one end of arms (jx) (jx) the opposite ends of which are fitted on the shaft (ex). The spiral spring (fx) has a tendency to keep or draw the shaft (ex) toward the boX (L) on the segment. On one end of the shaft S an arm (lx) is placed, said arm having a pin (mx) projecting from it at right angles.
U is a lever the lower end of which is pivoted to one side of the segment J. This lever has a notch or shoulder (nx) at its outer end which acts against the pin (mx) of the arm (lx) andretains the shaft S at certain times as will be presently shown.
At the back edge of the face (7c) of the segment a rod or shaft (0x) is placed. This rod or shaft has fingers or nippers (px) attached to it. To one end of the rod or shaft (ox) a short arm (gx) is attached and said rod has a spiral spring (rx) placed on it, said spring having a tendency to keep the ends of the fingers (px) against the back edge of the face An arm (sx) somewhat longer than arm (gx) is also attached to shaft (0x) and a rod (tx) is attached to theouter end of arm N, said rod passing through a guide (ux) on the side of the segment and actuating at a proper time the rod or shaft (0x). To one side of the carriage O, an arm ('Ux) is attached which arm at certain times also actuates the rod orA shaft (0x). To one side of the segment J, a pin (wx) is attached the use of which will be presently shown.
V represents the fly board which is attached to the back part of the frame A in any proper manner so that it may be readily detached from the frame. The outer end of tiguous to said rail.
this fly board has a ledge or upright plate (a) hinged or jointed to its back end, said ledge or plate being held or secured in an upright position by a rod (g/x) and spring (zx). The upper part of this ledge or plate has a flanch (60) formed on it.
IV, X, are two ink rollers the journals of which are fitted or placed in the upper ends of upright arms (5) (5) attached to shafts (0) (0) which are tted in the frame A, see Fig. 2, said shafts being allowed to work or play longitudinally in their bearings. To the under side of each shaft (0) one end of ybars (cZ) are attached, and the opposite ends .of those bars are connected to a T-shaped lever Y, which is pivoted to a cross bar (e) of the frame A, see Fig. 5. rlhe lever Y is operated byv a rod (f) which is connected with the shaft H near its lower end, see Fig. 2.
Z is a rod which is attached to the upper part of the frame A, and at one side of it a pin (g) which is attached to one of the rails (m) projects through the way (f) con- The rod Z when shoved forward passes the end of the pin (g) and prevents the lateral movement of the rails (m). To the front end of the rod Z an arm (L) is attached and the upper end of this arm works in a curved slot (71) in a bar (j) which is pivoted to one side of the feed board A said board being provided with Yhorizontal bars (16) between which the bars (z) of the carriage O, pass at the termination of its forward movement.
The blank sheets shown in red are placed on the feed board A', and are caught by the fingers or nippers the ends of which are thrown down upon the edge of the sheet in consequence of the bar (j) striking the spring plate (bx) and allowing the spring (y) to actuate them. The segment J and carriage O then move in the direction indicated by the arrows (2) and the fingers or nippers (w) carry .the sheet to the fingers or nippers (px) on the rod or shaft (0x) said lingers being made to open and receive the sheet by means of the bar (rx) at the side of the carriage which bar actuates the arm (sx). Upon the return motion of the segment as indicated by arrow (l) the impression is given the sheet, it being remembered that the face (la) of the segment when moving as indicated by arrow (2) is raised free from the form M and allowed to descend and rest upon the form when moving as indicated by arrow (l) this being effected by the rails (m) actuated as described. At the termination of the forward movement of the segment J, the printed sheet is taken from the fingers or nippers (px) by the nippers (gx) on the rod or shaft (ex), the fingers (px) being opened by the rod (lx) and the nippers (gx) being operated in any proper way. The nippers (px) are moved outward or back by the movement of the segment J during its back ward movement as indicated by arrow (2) and the printed sheet is deposited upon the fiy board V the fingers or nippers (gx) being opened to allow the sheet to be detached from them in consequence of the ledge or plate (at) against which said nippers act or come in contact. The rollers IV, X, serve as usual to distribute the ink upon the rollers and the form is inked by rollers (a5) attached to the carriage O.
By shoving forward the rod Z at any time during the backward movement of the segment the rails (m) may be kept underneath -or in line with thegrooves in the treads (CZ) of the segment and the press, so far as printing is concerned, rendered inoperative the same may be said of the feeding device for the bar (j) is elevated at the same time and holds up the fingers or nippers (w) so that they cannot grasp the sheets. The box (7L) is loaded or weighted according to the weight of the arms (c) and face (7c) and the velocity of the segment also being taken into consideration. If the box (L) exactly counterpoise the arms (c) and face (la), no provision will be made for the momentum of the segment and consequently at the termination of each stroke this momentum will cause a reaction or an opposing force will be directed against the driving one. In order to remedy this diiiculty the boX (7L) is so loaded as to be equal to the other parts of the segment, less or minus the weight necessary to control or counteract the inertia of said segment. This is an important feature of the invention and causes the whole machine to work evenly and with a moderate expenditure of power.
I do not claim separately or in itself considered the reciprocating carriage O, provided with ngers or nippers for feeding the blank sheets to the form, nor do I claim the fly separately or independent of its arrangement and connection with the parts as shown; but,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. The reciprocating rolling pressure segment J provided with a weight boX (h) or any suitable or equivalent device by which the counterpoise of the segment may be varied or graduated to be commensurate with the speed of the segment.
2. I also claim the reciprocating rolling pressure segment when arranged to operate as shown irrespective of the variable counterpoise.
3. I claim the reciprocating carriage O provided with the fingers or nippers in combination with the segment J for feeding the sheets to the form; and I also claim in combination with said segment J the ly or device formed of the rods or shafts claim the bar Z When used in connection With the rails (m) and having the bar (j) connected With it as shown, whereby the segment may be raised at any time and the sheets also prevented from being fed to the form.
5. I claim operating the lateral vibrating ink-rollers W, X, by means of the T-shaped lever Y substantially as described.
