Description

UNITED STATES PATENT EFICE.
SAMUEL W. SOULE AND C. LATHAM SHOLES, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNORS TO G. L. SHOLES.
PAGI'NG-MACHINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 44,488, dated September 27, 1864; antedatr d March 27, 1864-.
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known thatJ we, SAMUEL W. SoULE and G. LATHAM SnoLEs, of the city and county ot' Milwaukee, in the State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for Paging Books; and we hereby declare the following to be a full and complete description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making them a part of these specifications.
Figure 1 is a plan or top view of the machine. Fig. 2 is a side elevation; and Fig. 3 is a cross vertical section through the line m Fig. 1.
The same letter always refers to the same part in all the gures in these specifications.
A is the top of the table, B the legs, and H a hole or opening through the table, in which the book is placed when being paged.
C is a frame-work for the support of the machinery, and is made of wood or metal, the sides of which project above the center, forming a groove or railway, which keeps the plate or carriage d d in its proper position, and along which it moves as the machine is being operated. The platen f, attached to the arm g and turning on the point t, is brought down by pressing with the foot upon the lever L, which is attached to the platenarm g by the connecting-rods l and m. The connecting-rod m is made of iron or brass, in the form of a staple or clevy, working through a slot or mortise in the table, and has a spiral spring, n, attached to the bottom of it, and also to the Linder side of the table, which raises the arm g, and with it the platen, after each impression 1s made.
Attached to the arm g is the arc of a circle, b, in such a manner as to form an eccentric, which in its upward motion, working through a slot in the slide o, moves the type forward the distance of one figure by means of a pawl or finger attached to the slide o and acting on the ratchet y, connected with the type. A catch is attached, h, Fig. 2, to the connecting rod m, which in its upward movement turns the ratchet-wheel w, windin g the inked ribbon z upon one spool and unwinding it from the other, the intermediate part passing over the face of the type, thus presenting a fresh porv tion ofthe ribbon to the type at each impression.
To prevent the ratchet-Wheel from turning backward when the catch h leaves it, as well as to prevent it from turning too far forward, the spring r is attached to the frame C, acting upon the ratchet-wheel w.
The pieces s s are'for the purpose of sustaining the ratchet-wheel 'w and the spools e c in their proper places, and in which they are hung and revolve.
D is an adjustable support for the book to rest upon while being paged, and is suspended by bolts or screws from the points i t'.
The type or figures are secured to a plate in two columns, d d, Fig. l, and arranged in the following order, commencing with the Iigure 1 in one column and running up to 9, using only odd numbers, and commencing with the y figure 2 in the other column and running up to 8, using only even numbers, then in the column with odd numbers introducing the figures 01, 03, 05, 07, 09, 11, 13, and so forth, in numerical order, up to 99, and also introducing after the figure 8 in the even column the figures 00, 02, 04,06,08,10, 12, and so forth, up to 98. In this arrangement thc gures 2 and 3 are directly` opposite each other, as also 4 and 5 and 6 and 7, and so forth, the ligure 1 projecting beyond any figure in the opposite column. Another plate contains figures arranged in two columns from 1 to 15, more or less, according to the number of pages you desire to print, 15 being sufficient to print 1599, or if these columns be extended to 20 you can print 2099, and so forth.
P P, Fig. 1, is a covering inclosing the type, to the center of which is attached a thin edge or partition, p, lengthwise ot' the frame-work C, which serves the purpose of a gage against which the edges of the leaves are placed for the purpose of keeping them in their proper position while the book is being paged.
Attached to the small plate of gures is a rod, o, Fig. 1, made of a simple rod of iron or brass, for the purpose of moving the smaller set of type, when the larger set has been all used, to the next indeX-gure, forming a new combination.
Rod u, Fig. 1, is constructed of iron or brass and bent in such a manner that by turning it it serves to disengage the pawl or finger from the ratchet y, Fig. 1, and allows the plate of type d d to be run back after printing through the columns, so as to bring the 0() and 01 under the platen. Spring s, Fig. 2, is attached to the plate or covering C, and enga-ges with the ratchet n, Fig. 1, and as seen also in Fig. 3 of the original drawings, and holds the gures in a stationary position While the book is being paged.
The operation ofthe machine is as follows: The book is placed in the opening H, the back resting uponl the support l), the plate of type d d is run out till the tigure l comes directly under the inked ribbon z and the first leaf of the book brought ,around the frame U, the edge resting against the guide or partition p, when the platenfis brought down by pressing upon the lever L, as already explained, and the impression is given. The platen is then raised by the action of the spiral spring n, which moves the type forward, as before eX- plained, when the igures-2 and 3 come under the ribbon and two leaves of the book are brought around the framework U, their edges adjusted against the gage p, and the impression given as before. This operation is continued until the eighth and ninth pages are smaller set is then moved till the l in each column is opposite the 00 and the 01 of the former, which then prints 100 and 101, then Working on in the same order until the book is entirely paged.
What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The introduction of the gurcs 00, 02, 04, 06, 08-01, 03, 05, 07, 09 in the columns d d, as represented, for the purpose of forming anew combination, as set forth.
2. The combination of the long and short columns of figures with the spools e c and ratchet-Wheel o for operating the belt, as set forth.
