Specification of Letters Patent No. 12,178, dated January 2, 1,855.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, STEPHEN BROWN, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga an-d State of New York, have invented a new and Im roved Press for Printing in Colors; and o hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the: construction and operation of the same, ref-j erence being had to the annexed draw:ngsI making a part of this specification, in which- Y Figure l, is a side elevation of my improved press. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal vertical section of same, the plane of section being through the center. Fig. 3, is a detached top view or plan of the. sectional platens and the ways-or grooves in which they work.

This invention relates to a newv and'improved press for printing in colors, whereby several colors may be printed at a single operation or at the samev time.

On the shaft B, at about its center is *y placed a cam C, andv at each end ofl the frame A, at lts lowerl part are placed two transverse shafts D, E, the outer shafts E, E,
having arms F, F, attached to them. To the upper ends of these arms F, F, there are attached by jointed arms G G, two horizontal bars H, H, two bars to each arm, the two bars of each arm being some distance apart. At the end o-f each bar H, there is an ink roller I, secured or fitted infany proper frame or box J, and workingA in suitable bearings thereon. The frame or boxes being secured to the ends of the bars: H, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, and by dotted lines in Fig. 1. The frames or boxes H,I work or t in. horizontal grooves (a) cut in the inner surfaces of the sides of the frame A.
On the inner shafts D, D, there aresef cured bent or right angled levers K, K, one on each shaft. The upright partsof these bent levers are attached by jointed, levers 0r frames L, L, to the armsy F, F, on. the outer shafts E, E. The ends of the horizontalor connected together by a lbolt (b) which passes through a slot (c) in one of the levers vK, the bolt being permanently secured in the other lever K, and having a friction roller (d) upon it, as shown by dotted lines.

To one of the upper frames or boxes J, which contains an ink roller, an ..idjustable bar Q is secured, see Figs. 2 and 4:. This bar is secured to the boX or frame J, by set screws (i) so that it may be set forward or backward as desired. To this bar Q, fingers R, are secured, two or more. The lingers are formed of two jaws (j) (lo) one of which (j) is attached permanently to the bar Q, the other jaw (lo) is attached to the perinanent jaw by a pivot A spiral spring (m) is placed between the two jaws by which the outer end` of the jaw is kept against the outer end of the jaw (j). Tothe bar Q, and directly back of the jaw (7c) a small spring catch (n) is attached.
Sis a frame attached to one end ofthe frame A, by set screws (o) (o) so that it may be adjusted further in orout as desired. On the inner end of this frame S, a bar T, is suspended, said bar having pivots` at its ends which fit or work loosely in uprights (p) on the frame. The bar T, has small notches or recesses (g) cut in its under side and small spring pins or studs (r) pass vertically through the bar, the lower ends of the Spring or studs projecting a short distance below the under surface of the bar where the notches or recesses are cut, see Figs. 2 and 4. A small stud is placed in front of the bar T, at one end. j
V, is a bed plate placed directly over the platens P, and secured at the desired point by screw V, as shown in Figs. l and 2. The bed plate has a screw (t) passing through it, see Fig. 4; the use of this screw will be hereafter shown.
The type is placed upon the platens P, P, P, and motion being given the driving shaft Y, the cam C, is made to rotate and first acts upon. the friction roller (ci) upon the bolt Sb) and depresses'the ends of the horizonta parts of the bent levers K, K, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. l. This movement throws the ink rollers Leach of which is charged with a separate and distinct color, across the platens P, P, P, the rollers moving in unison or at the saine time, and inking the type on the several platens simultaneously. Each'roller inking the type on the platen which is inline with its inotion. The cam C, nowacts against the seg ment M, and throws the ink rollers back to their original position, as shownv in Fig. 2,
Yand the cam C, then raises the movable 'bed- 4` or platen N, theucam bearing against the friction roller O, and the bed or platen N, raises the sectional platens P, P, P, and forces them against the sheet which when receiving the impression is between the sectional platens P, P, P, and the bed plate V. The impression it will be seen will be in different colors corresponding to the different colors of the platens P, and as the several platens P, are pressed simultaneously against the sheet, what formerly required separate and distinct operations, is by my improvement performed in one operation.
The sheets of paper are fed to the press by the fingers R, 'attached to the'bar Q, on one of the upper frames or boxes J, see Fig. 4:. As the fingers are moved forward with the ink roller the lower end of the screwy l The fingers move forward over and beyond the platens in an open state till they pass under the bar T, at which point the Afingers reach the sheet the edge of which passes between thejaws, and the spring pin or'stud (r) throws the spring catch (n) off from the jaw (la) which closes by means of the spiral spring (m) and the fingers return with the sheet, the bar T, rolling or vibrating backward to allo-w them to pass. The
sheet being thus brought over the platens receives the impression and is then conveyed back with the return motion of the fingers and caught by the fly rollers.
The ink fountains and iy apparatus are not represented, as the usual devices are employed and they are well known to all press builders and require no description.
I-Iaving thus described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
l. The employment or use of a series of platens P, P, P, (two or more) arranged as herein shown or in an equivalent way, so that the form or type on said platens may be inked simultaneously with' separate and ydistinct colors and operated or pressed silmultaneously against the sheet as set forth.
2. I claims the arrangement herein shown of the vcam C, bent levers K, K, and arms F, F, which are connected to the bent lelvers, for the purpose of operating the movable` bed or platen N, ink rollers I, and
`lingers R as herein shownand described.
3. I claim Operating the iinge'rs R, by mea-ns of the screw (t) and rolling bar T, whereby the fingers are made to convey the sheet to and from the platens P, as herein described.
