PRINTING-PRESS.
Speccation of Letterslatent- No. 22,414, dated December 28, 1858.-
To allfwhom t'mcy concern:
Be it known that I, S. It. Co'rToN, of Grreen Bay, in the county of Brown and State of IViseensin, have invented a new and Improved Cylinder Printing-Press; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a side el-evation of a printing press constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2, is a. longitudinal vertical section of ditto, taken in the line m, Fig. 3. Fig. 3, is a transverse vertical section of ditto taken in the line y, y, Fig. l.

The object ofv this invention is to obtain a Very simple and economical cylinder press, one suitable for operation in a small way, as for instance in job printing and country newspaper oiiices, and one that will work rapidly with a small expenditure of power.
rlhe invention consists 1st. in the peculia arrangement of parts employed for transmitting motion to the form bed and inking device from the pressure cylinder. 2nd. In an equalizing device connected with the reciprocating form bed and so arranged that all back-lash is prevented at the termination'of its vibrations, and an easy smooth and regular movement obtained, and 3rd, in a peculiar means employed for adjusting and regulating the pressure cylinder as hereinafter fully shown and described.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents the frame of the'machine which may be constructed in any proper way to support the working parts. B, represents the pressure cylinder, the shaft a, of which has its bearings b, b, fitted between vertical guides c, c, on the frame A. The bearings Z), are attached to the upper ends of rods CZ, (Z, which extend down to the lower part of the frame A., and are attached by tension nuts c, e, to straps f, f, which encompass eccentrics g, g, at the ends of a shaft 71 which is placed in the lower part of the frame. To one end of the shaft 7L, a treadle t', is attached, said treadle having a spring y', bearing against its under side which spring has a tendency to keep the outer end of the treadle elevated, and the cylinder B, depressed toits lowest point.
The cylinder B, is provided with the usual fingers le, which are arranged and actuated in the usual or in any proper way te grasp the edges of the-blank sheets and take them from the feedV board C. To one end of the shaft a, of the cylinder B, a crank or pulley Z, is attached, and to theopposite end a cam or eccentric mi, is secured. The shape of this cam or eccentric is plainly shown in Fig. 1.
D, is a vertical rack bar, the upper end of which is slotted vertically and through the slot, the end cf. the shaft a, of the cylinder B, passes. The cam or eccentric mi, at a certain portion of'its revolution bears against a friction roller n, attached to the inner side of the rack bar D, and the cam or eccentric m, has a pin 0, projecting.horizontally from its outer side, said pin driving another portion of the revolution of cam m, bearing against a projection j), on the inner side of the rack bar D. Both the friction roller and projection of the rack bar are plainly shown in Fig. 3.
The rack bar D, gears into a pinion E, which is at one end of a shaft F, placed transversely in the frame A. On the shaft F, a pinion Gr, is permanently secured, and a corresponding pinion H, is placed loosely thereon. The two pinions G, H, are placed side by side and both gear into a rack I, which is attached to the under side of a form bed J, which is fitted and allowed to slide freely on ways Q', g, placed longitudinally in the frame A. To the outer side of the pinion H, a pin i, is attached horizontally and this pin is fitted or works within a yoke K, see Fig. 3, attached to a reciprocating slide bar L, on which a spiral spring s, is placed, see Fig. 2.
To the rack bar D, a horizontal arm t, is attached. This arm is slotted longitudinally near its outer end as shown clearly at u, Fig. l, and a pin fu., which is attached to an arm w, of a toothed sector 00, is fitted in the slot fw. The sector gears into a pinion y, which is attached to one end of the shaft of an ink roller a, the opposite end of said shaft having a screw thread formed on it.

E, is an ink fountain which is secured to the upper ends of uprights f', attached to the frame A, and g, is a roller which is placed directly below the fountain E. The roller g, has a ratchet la', at one end, and to the arm cZ, in front of the ratchet 71X, a pawl z", is attached. y, y, j, are rollers which convey the ink from the roller a, to the form M, on the bed J.
The operation is as follows: Power is applied to' the pressure roller B, in any proper The blank sheets are placed on the board O, and the form M, is properly ad justed on the bed Ji, as the cylinder B, rotates a reciprocating motion is given the bed J, by means of the rack bar D, the cam or eccentric m, the pinions E, G, H, and rack I, the cam Abearing on the roller n, and causing the rack to descend, and the pin o, of the cam bearing against the projection p, of the rack and causing it to ascend.n The pinion H, being placed loosely on the shaft F, is allowed to be adjusted so that the pin r, may act properly or at the right time on the yoke K, and compress the spring s, near the termination of each stroke of the bar J, and act upon the bed at the commencement of eac-h stroke. The spring s, therefore will equalize the movement of the form bed. The fingers 7c, grasps the edges of the sheets ctx, one at a time, and the sheets are conveyed around by the cylinder and pressed upon t-he form M, and after receiving` the impression the sheets pass on the flyboard N. The form M, is inked as it passes underneath the rollers j', y, just previous to its passing underneath the cylinder B. The upper roller .7', receives the ink from the roller a', which receives the ink by means of the roller e, from the roller g', the latter receiving` it direct from the fountain E, and being rotated intermittingly by the pawl z, and ratchet h. The roller c', is actuated so as to supply roller a, from g, in consequence of the pin b', of the sector striking against the rod C, and raising it as the sector ascends, the rod c, descending by its own gravity. The sector iv', gives a reciprocating partially rotating movement to the roller a', the sector being operated from the rack bar D, by means of the slotted arm t, and pin c, on the arm lw. The cylinder B, may when necessary be elevated at any time free from the form M, by depressing the treadle a', and the pressure of the cylinder B, on the form may'be regulated as occasion may require by adjusting the nuts e, c.
Having thus described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
l. Operating the form bed J, from the pressure cylinder B, by means of the cam or eccentric m, provided with the pin 0, rack bar D, provided with the projection p, and roller n, the pinions E, G, on the shaft F, with or without the pinion H, slide bar L, and spring s, and the rack bar I, the whole being arranged to operate as and for the purpose set forth.
2. I also claim the toothed sector m', which gears into the pinion y of roller a, and is connected with the rack bar D, by means of the slotted arm t, on the rack bar and t-he arm w, of the sector provided with the pin o, the rod c, attached to the arm ol, the pawl z", attached to the arm (Z, and the ratchet L, attachedto the roller g', the whole being arranged as hereinafter fully shown and described, so that the inking device will be operated automatically from the pressure roller.
3. l further claim having the bearings ZJ, b, of the pressure cylinder attached to rods d, (l, which are connected by tension nuts e, e, to straps f, that encompass the eccentrics g, of the shaft 7L, for the purpose of readily raising when necessary the cylinder' B, and regulating its pressure.
