HAND PRINTING-PRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent N o. 15,312, dated July 8, 1856..
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL K. WINDER, of the city of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Hand Card-Printing Presses; and I do hereby declare t-hat the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of the specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

The nature of my improvement consists in the arrangement of the different parts of the improved card press for obtaining several advantages irstly in the simplicity and cheapness of construction. I obtain a momentum communica-ted to the inking roller from the force and action of the distributing apparatus after the distributor passes over and leaves the inking roller;-
so that any two given portions of the surfaces of roller and form will not be likely to always come in contact during the inking process, but will cause different portions of the surfaces of inking roller and form to come in contact and thereby more equally distribute the ink, not only over inking roller from the distributer, but from inking roller to the form or types, in the most perfect and even manner, and furnishing each type with an equal and proper portion of ink.
To enable others skilled in `the art to make and use by improvement, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation by direct reference to accompanying drawings.
Figure A, represents a side elevation of the press, Fig. B is a plan or topview, and Fig. C is an end elevation of the improved press.

2, 2, are uprights for carrying and guiding the platen 3.
4, is the lever, used for the double purpose of pressing the platen aga-inst the form 12, by the means of cams 5 attached to the vibratory shaft 14, and also for operating the quadrant dist-ributer 6 over the inking roller 7 by means of connecting link 9.
The inking roller revolves in two spring bearings 8, 8, which permits the roller to spring up and down, and when the distributer is applied, the inking roller Jwill force itself hard against the distributer and thus the roller receives a plentiful supply of ink. And when the form l2 is drawn out and is passing under the inking roller, the spring bearings 8, 8, press said inking roller hard against the face of the types thus effectually rolling the form as it is technically termed, or performing properly the inking operation. y

10, is a weight for counterbalancing the lever 4 and its attachments.
The operation cf the press is as follows: The'cards to be printed or struck off are placed in between the slides 13 attached to the under surface of platen 3. The lever 4 is then pressed down, which causes the cam 5, attached to the vibrating shaft 14, to force the platen 8 down and brings the card contained in the slides 13 against thetypes or form and thus takes the desired impression. The lever is then elevated and the spring 1l forces the platen up`after which the printed card is removed-and another blank card placed in between slides 13 and the above operation is repeated.
In the motion of the lever 4 the distributer 6 is worked or passed over the inking roller, and the types are ink-ed by drawing the form l2 out, which is made to slide backward and forward on the stock l, and so passes under the inking roller as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. A. 16 is a stop for drawing the form 12 against, when drawn out to be rolled or inked.
What I claim as my improvement and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The arrangement of the distributer (6) and inking roller (7) to the platen '(3) as represented and the said distributer actuated by the lever (4) and link (9) only when said lever (4) is made to actuate the vibrating shaft (14) when said shaft is provided with the cam (5) for pressing down or operating the platen all for purposes before mentioned.
