This invention relates to certan mprovemente in vanity boxes or cases.
The sma1l cases for holding cos;rhetis now commonly known as vanity cases or boxes are capacitated to carry cosmetics, either in the form of loose powder or in the fo'rm of compacts, that is, powder which has been compacted onto a suitable suppofiz, or in some cases to cerry both loose powder end a compact, also the necessary applicators, such as puffs. These boxes, furt-hermore, are usually provided with a minor ahd e cover, the body and the cover of the box being usually pivotally associated by a hinge. Where loose powder is used in these boxes, either alone or in conjunction wth a compact, it is desirable that a construction be adopted which Will prevent the accidental leakage of the loose powder.
, same time will be of attraetive eppeararice It is the especial object of the present invention to provide animproved coristruction for preventing leakage of loose powder and at the same time provide a novel end improved construction for pivotally associabing the body and the cover of the box.
A further object of the inventon is to provide a box of fevv parts which can be cheap- 1y made end easily assembled, and at the end of a size and weighfi that it can be eesily carried in a; pocketbook' or in a pocket of the user. f
Wth these and other objects not specifica-1- 1y referred to in vew, the nvention corisists in eertain novel parts, arrangements end combinations which Will be fur'ther described in connection Wibh the accompanying dravyings and the novel features po1nted out in the claims hereunto appended.

Figure 2 is a view of the box, on an'enlar ed scale, shown open, the view bemg part- 1y roken away to show certain fleatures of the construction of the box; Figure 3 is a topview of a part' of ,the construction shown in Figure 2 i1h1strating the improved means for preventing leaka'geaof poWdernd for zissociating the coVer end the body of the box; v Figure 4 is acentral sectioflal View, on an e111erged scale, of the boxof Figure 1, the I view being taken on the line 1-4 of that figure;
Figure 5 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 3, end
Figure 6 s a detail Sectionai view, pertly broken away, the "iew being taken on the lino 6 6 of Figure 3.
Referrin 110W to these d1awings, the box which has oeen selected to illustrate the invention is what is known as a double box, thai? 7 is, a box arranged to hold both loose poWder end a compact. It will be Uriderstood, hoW- eVer, that the invention has been designed for and may be used With a single box, that is,
a boxcarrying loose powderonly, and the y inventi0n theiefore is not to be limited the style or type illustrated. I Refe'rring, however, to the box Shown, this box includes what 1nay be termed e, body 1 end e cover 2. In the particuleir construction illustrted, the box is designed to hold a compact, i1ic'1icated at 3, whichis held in n L-shaped fitmerit 4,1in the form of a, ring provided with nibs 5 punehed in frni the 'side of the box pst Which the compact is sprung end by Which it is held in position in the box, Thecover is thus Utilized, in the part1cu'lar constructwn shown, for carrying a compact, and an apphcatr, such as a, pilfi' 6, mey be used, heldn piace by a pufi'holder 7 ormed integrally with the fitment 4, before referred te. V V
The body of the box i s capacit a ted to carry loose powder, indicated at 8 in Figures 8 and 4, end in accordance with the nventon an improved me&ns is provided for controlling che ,distribution of this powder end preventing, accidental dischar e from the box, end
in (zonst'ructions' embo ying the invention in its best or 1 nthis powdercontrollng mesms y is also utilized for pivotallyess0cieitng the body 1 and the 'coVer While the specific construction of'thef powder corripfiirient of the box and the powder controlle'r inay be somewhet varied, as shoW11, the're is provided are provided for closing the powder distributing orifice so as to prevent accidentab discharge of powder from the powder co1npartment, and in the preferred coi1struct'i0n these means also a ct to pivotally associate the two parts of the box. In theparticular construction illustrated, such means include a sliding plate.orslide 15, Which slides in side guides formed in the bottom of the fitment. As shown, these guides are produced by securing to the bottom of the fitment, as by soldering or otherwise, a plate 16, this plate being formed With a downwardly extending portion 17, leaving a space between the fitment and the guide plate substantially the width andthickness of the slide. In the best constructions, furthermore, this plate is also provided, at one end, with a rim or lip 18, Which rests on thebottom 19 of the body and acts as a stop to space the fitment a suflicient distance from the bottom to forno apowdel -compartment of a desired depth within the capacityof the box. Preferably, in the best constructions, a packing strip 20 is provided between this wall 18 ,and the wall of the body of the box, and the Wall 18, as shown at 21, is slightly inset from the. wall of the boxbody to receive the packing strip and thus prevent egress of powder through the open end of the guide-slot, through Which the slide 15 is inserted in the fitrnent.
Ths slide 15, as before statd, inythe best constructionspivotally associates the body and the cover of the box through its association with the fitment 9, Which, as before stated, is securely held, frictionally or otherwise,in the box body. In theparticular construction illustrated this plate, at its outer end, is provided with a raised portion 22, which is bent over 011 itself to form, at 'each end, hinge- knuckles 28, 24, these knucklesl, as indicated at 25, being slightly inset from the sides of the plate. Cooperating with these knuckles are knuckles 24, 26, 27 seoured to the side wall 28 of the cover 2, these knuckles being united by a pintle pin 29 passing therethrough. V V V 1 The body 1, at its end or thai; adjacent the hinge is slightly insetto forin a recess30,
which is substaintially the width of the hinge formed by the knuckles 24, 25,; the plate 15 itself being slightly wider than this inset, so that when the p'rtsl are positioned;together the hinge fits into this recess and forms a neat appearing and tight joint.
In assembling the parts so far described, the plate 15.is associated with the body 1 through the hinge construction described and the plate is then slid into position through the guides, as illustrated in Figure 2. The plate when in its other position covers the openings in the fitment 9 and the plate 16, and forms apowder tight closure, which together'with the packing 20 efiectuallyprevents accidental escape of powder from the box. VVhen it is desired to use the powder, the plate is withdrawn, by pulling on the cover 2, to the p0sit-ion shown in Figure 3, at which time powder may be taken from the powder compart-ment by means of the applicator 14;, or iriany other desired manner. In the best constructions, for preventing theuser from entirely withdrawng the plate from the fitment 9, a stop is provided, such as a nib 31 formed in the abutment of the slide, which abuts agairist the edge ,of the opening in the guide-plate 16, before referred to.
The parts of the box may be re1novably.
secured together in any suitable manner. In the -particular construction illustrated, the body of the box is provided With a catch 82 over Which is adapted to snap a pivoted latch member 33,jthis being pivoted to the cover 2 of the box on a pivot pin 34.
In the best constructions the box is pro vided with a mirror 35, such as a polished metal plate, which preferably is pivotally associated with the box on the pintle pin 29, before referred to. As shown, the mirror is provided with an ear or extension 36, which is bent around the pintle intermediate the knuckles 26, 27, I
It W1ll be seen th at. withthe above constr uction a very neat and attractive box of simple design andfew parts has been produced, and one which efiectually preVents the accidental escape of loose powder. It Will be understood, of course, thatthe box may be made of any suitable metal and may be of any desired shape, that shown being simply illustrative. It Will also be understood that powder distributing orifices of uting opening in the fitment, a plate sedured tothe under surface of the fitment and spaced therefrorh to form a guideway, an imperio- Tate sfide frctionafiy engagng in the guideway, a, cover, and 'cooperating bingo knuckles on the cover and the sfide, so that the sfide acts to control the distributng openng and forms the only means for pivotglly associating the body and cover of the 2. In a powder box, a, powder compartment, a, fitment in the compartment and spaced from the bottom thereof to provide EL powder chamber, a distrbuting opening in the fitment, a plate secured to the under surface of the fitment and spaced therefrom to forno a guide, an imperforate sfide frctonally engaging in the guide, paokng for preventing leakage of powder past the sfide, a cover, and cooperatng hnge knuckles on the cover and sfide, so that the sfide acts to contro1 the distrbutng ope-ning end forms the only means for pvotally asoca.tng the body and cover of the box.
8. In a powder box, il body, a cover, a Eowder compartment in one of these memers, a plate having sfiding relation with the member forming the powder compartment for closng this, hnge knuckles on the plate, cooperatng bingo knuokles on the other member, and a, stop for preventng removal of the plate, so that the body, cover and plate are associated together, the sfide forming the only means for pivotally associatng the body and the cover.
4. In a powder box, a body, a cover, a powder oompartment in the body, guides in the body, a plate sfidable in the guides forclosng the compartment, bingo knuckles on the plate, hnge knuckles on the cover for pivotally assocatng the plate and cover,
sad knuckles forming the only means for assocating the plate and cover, a stop on the plate engaging the guides for preventing withdrawal of the plate from the guides, and an nset in the body for receving the hnge when the plate s in closed postion.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
