UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES J.-1E [IGGINS, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED DESK AND CABINET.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,53l, dated December 19, 1876; application filed March 24, 1876.
To all'whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES J. HIGGINS, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Desks and Gabinets Combined; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents the front view of. a common writin g table or desk with my improvements applied thereto, the cabinets being closed. Fig.
2 represents the same, the cabinets or cases of compartments open, and partly shown in section. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section upon the line as m, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line yy, Fig. 2; and Figs. 5 and 6 are detached views.
My invention or improvement consists of a novel construction and arrangement'of case or cases of compartments or cabinets, in combination with a desk or secretary.
The desk or secretary may be of any desired form, and the case or cases of compartments. or cabinet or cabinets must be adapted to the form of desk or secretary chosen.
One form of my case of compartments or cabinet and desk is seen in the accompanying drawing, Figs. 1 and 2, A being the desk, and B, O, and D different forms of the cases of compartments or cabinets which may be used. These cabinets may slide upon rollers Gr, Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6, or be withdrawn in any ordinary or known manner. On the left band, Fig. 2,
the front part B of the cabinet is hinged to the rear part 0, so that both are slid or drawn out together, and then the section B swings around horizontally to the left, so as to thus open from the'inside, and present all the compartments to the person without his leaving his seat; but the case of compartments D at the right hand is made nearly as deep as the desk A, and after being withdrawn it swings or tilts laterally to the right, so as to raise the lower compartment .and bring all of the openings to the compartments within convenient reach of the person without his moving from his seat.
My improvements may be applied to desks or secretaries of any desired form, and when used with the ordinary cylinder-desk the case of compartments may be locked by means of a spring-bolt, as shown at F in Fig. 6.
, I do not limit myself to the particular arrangement of the hinges, or the above-described mode of sliding or swinging the case of compartments or cabinet or cabinets; and I do not broadly claim the separate devices above described; but I believe it is new in desks or secretaries to slide out or withdraw a case of compartments, and to swing, or to swing and slide, the same into convenient position for a person to reach all the compartments without leaving his seat or standing position.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. A sliding and swinging case of compartments, having end or side openings, for the convenient reception of papers or books, in combination with a desk, A, or secretary, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with a desk, the compartment-case, consisting of the two sections B (J, hinged together, as shown, said case being adapted to slide wholly within the desk, and to be withdrawn far enough to allow the section B to turn upon its hinges to afford access to both sections, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
- CHARLES J. HIGGINS.
