Description

April 19, 1932. G NQRTHUP 1,854,908
LABEL HOLDER Filed Sept. 19, 1950 .ELg 7 INVENTOR. eorgeA NorTh/up A TTORNEY.
Patented Apr. 19, 1932 UNITED STATES GEORGE A. NORTHUP, OF POUGI-IKEEPSIE, NEW YORK LABEL HOLDER 7 Application filed September 19, 1930. Serial No. 482,926.
This invention relates to a device for holding and protecting labels or name cards such as are used for marking plants, trees, etc.
The usual practice in marking trees, plants, etc., is to attach thereto or to a stake, a wooden label on which is printed the name of the plant, etc; but owing to the action of the weather this soon becomes illegible and useless.
The object of the present invention is to provide a label holder of transparent material which may be suitably supported on a stake or attached to the tree or plant, and which may hold a card bearing the name of the tree or plant, and so arranged that said name card may be changed as desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide a label holder that shall be simple of construction, neat and durable, and which may be sold at a small cost.
lVith these and other objects in View, my invention consists in certain novel construction and combination of parts as will be fully described and claimed in the annexed specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part hereof and in which like figures of reference refer to corresponding parts in all of the views, but it is understood that slight changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device, showing the same attached to a stake. Figure 2 is an end view of the same. Figure 3 shows a front elevation of a modified form of attachment for a stake or rod.
Figure 4 is an end view of the same. Figure 5 shows another modified form of the device.
Figure 6 shows still another form and also means for attaching the device to a limb or branch.
Figure 7 shows another form of end at tachment.
Referring to the drawings The device comprises a tube 10 of transparent material such as glass, celluloid, etc.; of any desired size and open on one or both ends; said open ends being closed by a stopper 11 of rubber, cork or other material, and as shown in Figures 1 and 2', the tube 10 at apoint midway its ends is embraced by a wire 12, twisted as at 13 and formed with a prong 14 which may be inserted into the end of a stake 15.
Or as shown in Figures 3 and 4, the attaching wire may be in the form of a coil 17 embracing the tube 10 and having a supporting rod 18 which may be inserted into a stake or directly into the ground; and this form of label holder is shown with caps 16 for closing the ends.
In the modified form shown in Figure 5, the ends of the tube are closed by the stoppers 11, and the tube 10 is formed with two encircling bands 20 spaced apart and designed to hold a wire eye 21 formed on the end of a rod 22.
As shown in Figure 6, the tube 10 is provided at one end with the stopper 11 and at the other end with a stopper 28 which is provided with a bent wire 29 having a head 30 within the tube in engagement with the inner end of the stopper 28 to prevent the removal of the wire 29 which may be twisted around a limb or branch of a tree or other object, and in this form of tube is shown another attaching means comprising a band 31 placed around the tube 10 and secured by a rivet 32 and having holes 33 for attachment to a stake.
In Figure 7 of the drawings, the tube 10 is provided with a stopper 11 in the lower end, and a stopper 23 in the upper end; said stopper 23 being provided with a ring 25 threaded on a wire 24 which is inserted through said stopper 23 and has its ends 27 bent over to prevent removal.
In all of the views, the label is indicated by the numeral 26 and comprises a strip of card board or paper on which is printed the name.
It is understood that while in all of the views the tube 10 is shown with open ends, that one end may be closed in the making if desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A label holder, comprising the combination with a tube of transparent material adapted to hold a printed label, of a pair of spaced bands formed on said tube, and a wire embracing said tube between said bands and 5 formed with a depending portion adapted to be inserted into a stake for the purpose of mounting said tube.
2. A label holder, comprising the combination with a tube of transparent material adapted to hold a printed label and having means for closing the ends thereof, of a pair of spaced bands on said tube, and a wire embracing said tube adjacent the bands and formed with a portion for attachment to a. support.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
GEORGE A. NORTHUP.
