M invention relates to rolls.- It as for its object to provide an improved roll, and more particularly an improved roll adapted to use as a rubbing or sharpening roll or the like. A still further object is to provide an improved roll especially adapted to use in connection with a stropper for safety razor blades wherein the sharpening member is connected in an improved manner to the roll and the roll construction is improved and simplified in Such manner as substantially to reduce the cost of the same. These and other objects and advantages of my improved construction will, however, hereinafter more fully appear.
In -the accompanying drawings I have shown one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice, the same being illustrated in connection with a stropper roll, although it will be understood that the inventi(i111 is not limited to embodiment in such a ro In these drawings,'

Fig. 5 is a similar end view after the pin has been inserted but showing the pin in section.
In this illustrative construction I have shown a roll 1 having a spiral sharpening member 2 thereon and herein disposed in a shallow narrow spiral groove 3, the member 2 preferably being formed of leather or other suitable material adapted to engage and sharpen the edge of a bladewhen the roll is rotated in contact therewith, and the roll herein being equipped with improved means 1927. Serial No. 193,637.
for connecting the ends of this member 2 to the roll as hereinafter more specifically described.
' It being understood that the connection at each end of the roll is of the same construction, a specific description of the right hand end of Figs. 1 and 2 is believed to be sufficient. Here it will be noted that the spiral groove 3 passes spirally across acommunicating radial slot 4 formed in the right hand'end of the roll, which in turn communicates with a short longitudinal slot 5 within the roll and with the roll bore 6, the slot 5 and bore 6 being parallel to one another and communicating as shown. More particular- 1y, it will be noted that the slot 4 is relieved to facilitate the entry of the end of the strip. For example, the corners 7 and 8 of the slot 4 are preferably rounded slightly and the vertical edges 9 of the slot are also slightly rounded or beveled, as shown, as is also the edge 10; while the edges or walls 11 are caused to diverge slightly. Thus it will be noted that when the strip 2 is brought around in the groove 3, the end of this strip, when of suitable length, may be bent near its extremity and forced laterally into the slot 4.- in such manner that, while lying flat in the slot it extends through the same opposite the slot 5 and the end of the bore 6 and lies transversely of the latter, the special shaping of the slot, its corners 7 and 8, and its edges 9 serving to facilitate its insertion. In this position, illustrated in Fig. 4, it will be noted that the end of the strip is definitely positioned due to its inter-engagement with the roll, including the spiral groove and-the end slot.
Cooperating with my improved means serted in the bore by drivingthe same into the latter when the sharpening strip is in the position illustrated in Fig. 4. Here it will also-be noted that to facilitate driving in of this pin the inner end of the same is made rounded and smooth and of slightly reduced cross section, as shown at 13. Further, to pre- BEARDSLEY & WOLCOTT MFG. 00., A CORPORATION OF CON- vent rotation between the pin and roll and to hold the end of the sharpenin strip securely while facilitating driving, is e pm is also preferably roughened, herein longitudinally fluted, between its ends, as shown at 14:, this portion being of slightly greater diameter than the bore. Also, to limit the inward movement of the pin and enable the outer end thereof to form a journal, a smooth annular head 15 is provided on the outer end of the pin, this head 15 being of slightly greater diameter than the portion 14. It will also be noted that in this construction the pin is adapted to extend approximately to the inner end of the bore'6, though, as shown, preferably not contacting with the inner end of the same. Thus, it will be observed that when the pin is driven in, the end of the strip 3, which as shown in Fig. 4 extends across the bore 6 and is of the same uniform strong cross section as the rest of the strip, is forced inward in such manner as to displace the end of the strip laterally and make it occupy the position in the longitudinal inner groove 5 illustrated in Fig. 2,, wherein it is securely clamped by the pin, the fluted surface of the 7 pin acting not only to hold the pin securely in position, but also to hold the strip.
In the use of my improvement it is found that it is possible to utilize pins 12 of identic construction, not only to attach the opposite ends of the sharpening strip and also to form the spindle or studs on which the roll is journaled in the stropper frame, but also to connect the roll gear 16 to the driven end of the roll. To do this the gear'16, which is provided with an axial opening registering with the bore 6 at that end, is simply placed coaxially with the bore after the shar ener strilp has been inserted in the slot, as s own in ig. 4:, and the pin is then driven throu h the gear until its portion 15 abuts against t e outer surface of the gear, the fluted portion 14 of the pin then also acting to prevent rotation of the gear while the end of the strip 3 is engaged by thisfiuted portion and thestrip is also clamped between the gear and the roll. In this end of the roll the in 12 thus performs another function, i. e. t at of holding the gear in place, in addition to the function of holding the sharpener strip in position and forming a spindle for. the roll.
As a result of my improved construction,
a .it is found possible to hold the leather strip securely in the desired position and also to fix the pins securely in position in the roll, the roughened area on the pinsacting effectually to engage both the end of the strip and the bore in such manner as to prevent turning. As a result of this construction, it is also possible to use a roll formed of softer material than the pin and thus enable the flutes on the pin not only to be embedded in the end of the strip in such manner as to prevent rotation, but also to. be embedded in the aesasse .which can be very quickly and simply assembled. These and other advantages of my improved. construction will, however, beclearly apparent to those skilled in the art. I While I have in this application specifically described one form which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that the invention may be modified and em-' bodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
What-l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A spirally grooved razor stropper roll having an axial bore therein and a radial slot in its end communicating with said groove and bore and having a spiral stropping member disposed in the spiral groove therein and a bent end on said member lyin in said slot and projecting into said bore and adapted to be deflected therein by a spindle inserted therein.
2. In combination, a razor stropper roll having anvaxial bore therein and an end slot communicating therewith and extending radially transversely across one-half of the end of said roll, a stropper member wound spirally on said roll and having an end in said end slot and extending into said bore, a spindle disposed in said bore and engaging therein the end of said stropper member in said bore.
3. In combination, a roll having a bore and a slot in one end thereof communicating with said bore, a member wound s irally of said roll and having a bent end in saldslot, and extending into said bore, and a pin adapted to be driven into said bore to deflect the bent end of said member.
4. In combination, a spirally grooved razor stropper roll having a bore and a radial slot in one end thereof communicating-With said groove and bore and a longitudinal slot insaid bore communicating with said radial slot, :1. member in said groove having a bent end in said slot and extending into the bore, and a spindle in said bore deflecting the end of said member extending into'the bore into said longitudinal slot as said spindle is inserted into said bore.

6. In combination, a roll having a, spirial I strip thereon and provided with an end slot and axial bore and a chamber connecting said slot and bore, and a pin insertable in said bore and deflecting in said chamber the end of said strip and having a roughened area engageable' with the walls of said bore and the end of said strip.
7. In combination, .a spirally grooved roll having an axial bore and provided with a communicating opening at its end and an end slot leading to said opening and bore, a mem her in said groove having an end in said end slot and extending across said opening into said bore,and a spindle insertable in said bore having a drivin end adapted to deflect the end of said mem er, an intermediate portion gripping said bore and member, and an, outer end forming a journal for the roll.
