To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANTONI PAszxmwioz, subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Polishing-Cylinders, of which the following is a specification.
Th1s invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in' polishing cylinders.
provide a polishing cylinder with a removable covering material that is held in position on the cylinder by fastening means positioned within the periphery thereof, the particular form'of fastening means forming the subject-matter of the present invention.
'With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the diLwings forming a part of this application .and in which like-designating characters --refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figures 1 and 2 are end elevational views, partly in section, and taken on line II and 11-11 respectively of Fig. 3 showing the manner of holding the emery paper upon the cylinder. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device partly in section better to illustrate the paper-retaining devices. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail perspective views respectively of the two locking bars.
Referring more in detail to the accompanving drawings. the reference numeral 10 des gnates a cylinder that may be formed of anv suitable material and having a central longitudinal bore 11 to facilitate the mounting of the same and supporting ,a driven The peripheral face of the cylinder is provided with a fabric covering 12 to prevent slipping movement of the emery paper mounted thereon. While the polishing material herein mentioned is referred to as emery paper, it is to be understood that any preferred form of polishing material may be utlllzed as the occasion may require. A longltudinal slot 13 extends along the per phery of the cylinder 10 and within which slot the meeting edges of the emery paper 14 are adapted to be received. The locking device for retaining the overlapped ends of the emery paper within the groove s clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the same including a pair of bars 15 and 16, the bar 15 being rectangular in cross section, while the bar 16 is substantially semi-circular in cross-section. The overlapped edges of the emery paper-14 are positioned between the lower locking bar 16 and the upper locking bar 15 and clamped inthis position by the fastening screws 17 passing through openings 18 in the said bars. Means are provided for drawing the locking bars towardthe inner end of the slot so that the emery paper upon the cylinder 10 will be in close contact with thefabric12 and consists in providing a. slot 19 at each end of the cylinder with openings at the ends of the cylinder and positioned slightly below the groove 13. A nut 20 is positioned in each of the grooves 19 and is prevented from turning relative to the cylinder bv the side edges thereof contacting side walls of the slot, a threaded opening being provided in each nut 20 through which extends the screw 21. the lower end of which is received in the radial opening 22. Bv t ghtening the screw 21 that passes through the end openings 18 in the locking bars 15 and 16. the said screw is adapted to pass through the nut 20 and draw the locking bars 15 and 16 into the slot 13. so that the same maybe positioned completely within the periphery of the cylinder 10. v
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of mv present invention, I do not wish to confine mvself to the same, but minor changes mav be m de therein without departing from the spirit and scope of t e in ent on as set forth in the claim.
What I claim as new is:-
A polishing device including a solid cvlinder having a central long tudinal bore, there being a longitudinal slot on the periphery of said cylinder. a fabric covering for the cylinder .terminating at the edges of the slot, an abrasive material in the form of a sheet positioned on said fabric covering with the overlapped edges thereof extending into said slot, :1 pair of locking bars positioned in said slot between which the overlapped edges of the polishing sheetare adapted to be positioned, means for moving the bars toward each other to lock the sheet therebetween, said cylinder having a pair of slots opening at the endsthereof and located directly beneath the aforesaid slot, a nut having its sides engaging the side walls of the slotpositioned in each of said slots at the inner ends thereof with the top and hottom faces of the nut engaging the top and bottom faces of the last-named slots, and a locking screw passing through-said bars and 15 thorough tightening of the abrasive sheet 20 upon the cylinder.
