IMPROVEMENT IN ADJUSTABLE SPITTOON-BRACKETS. I
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,004, dated December 5, 1876; application filed October 24, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL STocKToN WHITE, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Spittoon- Stand, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to that class of spittoon-stands employed by dentists. Its object is to render the stand adjustable vertically, laterally, and longitudinally relatively to its baseer support.
The subject-matter claimed is hereinafter specified.
In the accompanyig drawings, Figure 1 represents a view in elevation, partly in section, of my improved stand 5 Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section through the supportingbracket, lookin g outward from the support on the line l l of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a horizontal transverse section through the stand on the line 2 2 of Fig. l.
A suitable base, A, supports a tubular column, A', in which a solid post, B, moves freely endwise, and is held at any desired elevation by means of a spring-detent, a, engaging-with a series of holes, b, in the post. The bracket U projects from this post, and turns freely horizontally thereon, and moves up and down with it, having no vertical movement independently thereof. The supporting -arm D slides freely endwise upon and parallel'with the upper bar of this bracket, being provided for this purpose, at its inner end, with grooved lugs d, overlapping corresponding anges on the bracket C. A spring tumbler-rest, E, is
mounted upon this arm, the outer extremity of which arm is provided with a spring-clamp, j', which holds the spittoon F beyond the outer end of the bracket.
The apparatus can be placed in any desired position relative to the operators chair, and adjusted to any desired height. The swinging bracket enables it to be moved around its supporting-post, and the adjustable sliding arm enables the spittoon to be placed at any desired distance from its supporting-post, thus making a very convenient implement.
The bracket, it will be seen, is held in place and prevented from moving vertically on its post by the cap-screw in the end of the post above the bracket-bearing, and the shoulder on the post below said bearing. The-bracket may readily be detached, when desired, by removing the screw.v
I do not broadly claim a swinging bracket mounted upon a vertically-adjustable post, as that is not new; Abut What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The dental spittoon-stand hereinbefore described, consisting of the combination of the tubular base or support, the supporting-post, adjustable vertically therein, the bracket swinging around the post, but having no vertical movement independently thereof, and secured thereon by a shoulder below and a cap-screw above, and the `supportingarm adjustable longitudinally on and parallel with the upper bar of the bracket, and supporting the spittoon beyond the outer end thereof, these members being constructed and operating in combination as hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
