I MEMORANDUM PAD ATTACHMENT FOR TELEPHONES Filed Aug. s, 1928 TM ATTORNEYS I Patented-Mar. 8,1932.
' 30 the position shown in Fig. 2.
UNITED STATES AT N OFFICE.
JOHN D. nonnnnn or BRISTOL, r nnnsrnvnnm .MEMORANIDUM PAID ATTACHMENT FOR TELEIPHONES J Application filed August s; 1928. Serial No. 297,149.
7 v. Another object is theprovision of an attachment'which will occupy but littlespace and which may be folded compactly when not in use. I
The foregoing together with such other i objects as may hereinafter appear-or are incident to my invention I obtain bymeans of a construction whichI have illustrated in preferred form in the accompanying draw- V r 14' has an opening 20, through which the'finq ings wherein V i Fig. 1 is a sectional view of the device in closed position attached to a telephone.
' 2 is a sectional view similar to Fig. 1'
with the pad in position for writing; and
. Fig. 3 is a planview of the attachment in 'An ordinary desk telephone 'withbarrel 4 and base portion 5 is shown'resting on support 6. The pad holder comprises the clamp 9 plate or cover 11 and pad retaining member 14. The clamp 9 fits around the'barrel 4 of the telephone and is tightened to grip the barrelbymeans of bolt 7 and knurled nut 8. The clamp 9 also has a projecting ear portion 10 to which is secured the plate or covermember 11 The plate 11. may be welded to this ear or secured in any other desired manner.
' This platell' liesin asloping position at the 7 same general angle asthe angle of the surface of the base'portion'5 of the. telephone and the lower edge ofthe plate rests on or just slightly above the support 6 and in substantially the same plane asthe bottom of the base 5. The side portions 12'of the plate 11 are bent upwards at right angles thereto andthe upper end portion 13 is also bent upwardlyin the same manner. The pad retaining member 14 has upturned end portions 15 the edges 16 of the end portion being again'bentfto lie parallel to the base ofthe member- A pad l7cmay be slippedunder these edges 16 and will be held'firmly in position, by means of the upturned end portions 15 abovereferred to and by means of the portions 18 ofcthe sides which are also bent upward to engage the sides of thepad'l'i'il Y The pad retaining member 14 is of substan tially the same size as the plate 11','being just i enough smaller to fitcloselywithin the'upe turned'edges of the plate.
The pad retaining member 14 ishinged at one end to the lower end .of the plate 11 by means of. small rivets 19* which extend through the upturned portions 18 of the pad, retaining member and the upturned sides 12 of the plate or cover 11. 7 J
The-bottom of the pad retaining'member ger may be insertedin order to push out the cover offthe .old pad when the sheets thereof have been used.
' v From the above it will be seen that the pad retaining member when opened to position for use will lie fiat on they desk so that the pacliwill lie in the position in which it is normally' usedwhen notattached to a telephone. It will be unnecessary to'ra-ise the wrist-or hand in order to write onthe pad as is the case with many attachments.
When the pad isnot in use it may be folded into the cover andin this position it isout of the way and does not interfere with moving above'thede'sk. V
The clamp 9 occupies but very little space on the barrel of the telephone and leaves the whole upper portion thereof free to be of the, telephone aboutthe desk or holding'it grasped without interference.
' The whole device when in closed position occupies but very little space and interferes in no way with the use of the telephone.
I claim 7 1. "The c'ombinationxwith a desk telephone of a pad holder comprising a clamp adapted to be secured to the barrel of the telephone, a. plate secured to said clamp, the lower edge of said plate lying substantially in the plane of the bottom of the base of the telephone, 5 and a pad retaining member hinged to the lower end of said plate.
2. The combination with a desk telephone of a pad holder comprising a clamp secured to the barrel of the telephone just above the base thereof, a plate secured at its upper end to said clamp, the lower edge of said plate lying in substantially the same plane as the bottom of the base of thetelephone and a pad retaining member hinged to thelower end of said plate.
,3. The combination with a desk telephone 7 and its support of a pad holder comprising a clamp attached (to the lower portion ofthe barrel of the telephone, a plate secured at its upper end to said clamp and sloping at substantially'the same angle as the general angle of the surface of the base of the telephone, the lower edge of said plate being in uxtaposition with the said support, and a pad retaining member hinged to the lower end of said plate andadapted to lie flat onthe support in one position and to fold against sa1d plate in another position.
4. The combination with a desk telephone of a pad holder comprising a clamp secured to'the barrel of the telephone just above the base thereof, a plate secured to said clamp at itsupper end, the'lower edge of said plate lying in substantially the same plane as the bottom of the base of the telephone and a pad retaining member hinged to the lower end of said plate, the said plate having upturned edges and forming a cover for the pad when the pad retaining member is folded 40 against it.
' '5. pad holder for desk telephones comprising in combination a clamp adapted to be secured to the barrel of the telephone, a pad retaining member, and a supporting member for said pad retaining member, said supporting member being secured to said clamp at such angle that the lower part thereof will lie substantiall in the plane of the bottom of the'baseo the telephone when the clamp is secured to the barrel thereof, the said pad retaining member being hinged to the lower part of the supporting member.
' In testimony whereo I have hereunto signed my name.
