Description

April 22 1 924. 1,491,289
c. c.- CLIFFORD NOTE BOOK HOLDER Filed Sept. 7. 1921 Patented Apr. 22, 1924.
NITED STATES CHARLES CONDIT CLIFFORD, O33 NEN YORK, N. Y.
NOTEBOOK HOLDER.
Application filed September 7, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES CoNDrr Cnirronn, a citizen or" the United States, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, city of New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Notebook Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in note book holders, and especially to that "form which is adapted for use by stenograpliers, typists, etc; and the objects of my improvements are to provide a light and compact device which may be readily carried in the hand or rested on the knee, or on a desk or table for the purpose of taking notes; and may then serve as a convenient support for the book or papers containing said notes and hold same in such a position as to come readily within the vision of the user when transcribing said notes or memo randa; and to further provide a support for cards, papers and the like, holding same at a convenient angle and facilitating the copying or transcribing of the matter appearing thereon.
I attain these objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which;
Fig. 1. shows a front view of the device in an upright position.
Fig. 2. shows a side view of same.
Fig. 8. shows a cross section on the line 3 of Figure 1.
Fig. 4. shows a front view of the device with note book thrown open and pages held back so as to disclose the notes for transcription. In this figure the lower portion of the device is cut away.
Fig. 5. shows a side view with pages held back as in Figure 4.
Fig. 6. shows the device with card containing matter for copy resting thereon. The upper portion of the holder is cut away in this figure.
7. shows a side view of the support ing member as in the preceding figure.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings; a panel or platen 1 with supporting side members 2 and 3 has movably attached thereto a swinging rod 4 which may be locked in position Serial No. 499,069.
by means of the hook 5 which also serves as a retainer for leaves from which the sub ject matter has been copied or transcribed. A supporting bracket or rest 6 is movably attached to the side members 2 and 3 and frictions against same in such a manner as to remain in such position as it may be placed by the user. It may serve either as a support for copy or may be turned up ward against the leaves of a note book preventing same from fluttering when subject to air drafts and the like. An easel support 7 is also attached to said side members 2 and 3 and may be looked in any desired position by means of the wing nut 8 which bears on the washer 9. This easel su )ort 7 is no vided with a. butter 10. The hook 5 is pivotally attached to the platen 1 by means 0? the headed pin 11 and bearing surface is provided by the washer 12. The note book 13 and the card 14 are shown to further illustrate the uses of the device.
I am aware that the use of easel devices for note book holders is not new but believe that I am the first to provide locking. leaf retaining, and supporting features in the manner herewith shown and. described.
l-Iaving thus described my invention. I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent; the following:
1. In a device of the character described; a panel or platen -with swinging bar attachment adapted to pass within the pages of a note book or the like, and locking mechanism. consisting of a hooked or L shaped lever in position to bear on said swinging bar.
2. In a device of the character described: the combination of a panel or platen with swinging bar attachment adapted to pass within the pages of a note book or the like. and locking mechanism consisting of a lever and leaf retaining book which presses on said bar when in a closed position; and a copy rest or support attached to the lower portion of said panel, together with easel bracket and means to lock same in place.
Signed at New York city. in the county of New York and State of New York, this 6th day of September, A. D. 1921.
CHARLES CONDIT CLIFFORD.
