My invention relates to improvements in copy holders, and it consists of the combinations, con-- structions and arrangements" hereinafter described and claimed.

An object of'my invention is to provide a copy holder which is an improvement over the forms shown in-my threepatents, No. 1,903,523 issued April 11, 1933;No. 1,908,8'7ei issued May 16,1933 and No. 1,950,706 issued March 13, 1934,- and also is an improvement over the'three' pending applications Serial No.- 676,381 filed June '17, 1933, allowed June 19, 1934, Serial No. 704,998 filed January 2, 1934 and Serial No. 717,245, filed ,March 24, 1934. 16

a copy holder which is extremely compact in A further object of my invention is to provide construction and which is designed to'support note books of different sizes. The lower shelf of the copy holder is inclined for supporting the open side of the closed note book, while theltop shelf is shaped in a novel manner for providing a support for the two hinges of the notebook, and also for the back of the book.

Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel 'fea tures of the device. will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the copy holder showing a note book in closed position withits rear cover disposed in the pocket;

In carrying out my invention I provide a copy holder'havinga back indicated generally at 1, a bottom shl'ftindicated generally at 2, and a top shelf indicatedgenerally at 3. The'back 1 hasa pocket 4 provided with a front Wall 5 and a rear Wall 6. Figure 1 shows the front Wall 5 asextending about two-thirds the distance up the back 1, although it .isto be understood'that the wall can be extended. close up to the shoulder on the shelf 3 if desired. The rear Wall 6 of the pocket extends to thextop shelf 3 andthe same sheet of material forming the rear wall 16 is bent to form the top shelf 3. His obvious that if the front wall 5 was extended to the shoulder 12 on the shelf 3, the rear wall could be cut away sofas to provide only a strip adjacent to the top shelf 3 if desired. A second strip- (not shown) would also of a part of the adbe used for pivotally carrying the copy holder leg hereinafter described.

Figure 2 shows how. the front wall 5 of the pocket has its lower end bent around the rear wall 6 as at 7, and further shows how the same sheet .of material forming the front wall 5 is used for forming the bottom shelf 2. The portion 7 is soldered or otherwise secured to the rear wall 6 so as to form a bottom for the pocket 4. The side edges of the front wall 5 are bent. around and are secured to the rear wall 6 as at 8. In this waythepocket 4 is provided with front and rear walls, a bottom and side walls.

The pocket receivesa cover 9 of a note book 10. I have shown the note book 10 in closed position in Figure 1'. In order to prevent the bottom of the note book, when closed, from extending over the edge 11 of the bottom shelf 2, I extend the bottom shelf at a slight angle, and turn the front edge -11 upwardly, as shown in Figure 2. The shelf whenshapedin this manner will support the entireopen end of the note book and will prevent the front portion of the note book from sliding off the shelf. The angular position of the shelf 2 throws the weight of the book against the back 1, and permits the book to be more readily opened than would otherwise be the case.

The top shelf 3 is formed in a novel manner and this is clearly shown in Figure 2. It will be noted that the top shelf is provided with a shoulder 12 and then with a round portion 13, and finally with an upstanding flange 14. The note book 10, when placed in position has its rear hinge 15 placed beneath the shoulder 12, and then when the note book is opened the'back 16 thereof will rest on the curved portion 13, while the front hinge 1'7 of the note book will be supported by the flange 14. The front cover 18 will hang from the flange 14 in the manner shown in Figure 2. It will therefore be seen that the note book is close ly held to the copy holder and at the same time permits any number of leaves to be turned without pulling the cover 9 from the pocket. This is a decided advantage for the typist because each page of the note book will remain in position indefinitely.

I provide a supporting leg for the copy holder and this is shown in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive. In Figures 2 and 3 I show a channel-shaped bracket 19 secured to the rear wall 6, and the leg 20 is pivoted in the channel at 21. The top of the leg has an inclined surface 22, see Figure 2, and this engages with the channel and limits the outward swing of the leg. The leg is fork-shaped and its two feet 23 are provided with rubber ends 24. The leg 20 may be swung into operative position for supporting the copy holder, or it may be swung into inoperative position against the back 1.

I provide novel means for supporting the bottom edges of the note book covers which are smaller in size than the largest note book. Figures 2 and 3 show the rear wall 6 as having .a slot 25 with an enlarged upper end 26. Figures 5 and 6 show a screw 27 having a head 28 insertable through the large recess 26, and the head is cut away on both sides as at 29 for forming a portion 30, which slides in the recess 25. The top of the head is flat as at 31, and is designed to en gage with the bottom edge of the cover 9. The screw 2'7 is locked in adjusted position by means of a nut 32, and the nut has a recess 33 formed therein for providing a flange 34 that bears against the back 6 and locks the screw in adjusted position. When a large note book is used the adjustable button 32 is not used, and for this reason it is shown in dotted lines in Figure 2.

I also provide a line indicator of novel construction, and this line indicator includes a guide 35, see Figure 3, placed adjacent to one edge of the copy holder and on the underside thereof. The guide is spaced from the back 1 by a screw 36 disposed at the top of the guide, this screw acting as a spacing member. The screw 36 extends from the curved portion 3. The lower end of the guide 35 is attached to the bent portion 7 by a screw 37 and the lower end of the guide is extended below the shelf 2 and is curved upwardly for forming one of the legs 38 of the copy holder. The other leg 39 of the holder is secured to the portion 7 by a screw 40, and this leg, see Figure 2, is curved upwardly in the same manner as the leg 38.

A sleeve 41 is slidably mounted on a guide 35 and has a leaf spring 42 formed therein, and this spring is designed to frictionally engage with the guide 35 for supporting the sleeve in adjusted position. The inner surface of the sleeve may be slotted as at 43, and this will permit the sleeve to be moved so that the top edge thereof will pass the bolt 36. When the top edge is past the bolt 36, the leaf spring 42 can be forced down so as to increase the tension. In this simple way the friction of the spring can be controlled. The cut away portion 43 would also permit the lower end of the sleeve 41 to move below the screw 37 and the line indicator hereinafter described can be swung below the lower shelf 2.

The sleeve 41 carries an arm 44 and the arm in turn carries a screw 45, see Figure 4. The line indicator 46, see Figure 1, has a rearwardly extending portion 4'? provided with an opening 48 larger than the diameter of the screw 45. A nut 49 in the shape-of a handle is threaded onto the screw 45 and has a shoulder 50 receivable in the opening 48, and this shoulder bears against the arm 44 so that when the handle 49 is tightened the indicator 46 can still be swung about the screw.

From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device the operation thereof may be readily understood.

The cover 9 of the note book is placed in the pocket 4, and the line indicator 46 is in the position shown in Figure 1 when the note book is placed in the pocket. The open end of the book is placed on the shelf 2 and the inclination of the shelf and the front lip 11 keeps the front cover of the book and the pages from slipping off the shelf.

The leg 20 is now extended and the line indicator 46 is raised into the desired position after the book has been opened. The book is supported by the top shelf 3 in the manner already described, and the sleeve 41 will hold line indicator down as needed by merely pulling downwardly on the screw handle 49. If a small note book is used the adjustable button 32 is also used.

I claim:

1. A copy holder comprising a support provided with a pocket for receiving a note book cover, the pocket having a front and rear wall, the front wall being extended to form a bottom for the pocket and also for forming 'a note book supporting shelf.

2. A copy holder comprising a support provided with a pocket for receiving a note book cover, the

pocket having a front and rear wall, the front 1 wall being extended to form a bottom for the pocket and also for forming a note book supporting shelf, the rear wall being extended for forming a shoulder designed to engage with one hinge of the note book, the extension then being formed into a curved top shelf for supporting the back of the note book, the edge of the top shelf extending upwardly for engaging with the other hinge of the note book.

3. A copy holder comprising a supporting pocket for receiving a cover of a note book, the front wall of the pocket having its lower end bent around the rear wall for forming a bottom to the pocket, the wall then being bent back upon itself for forming a shelf that will support the bottom of the note book, said shelf being inclined at an acute angle with respect to the front wall and. having its front edge bent upwardly.

4. A copy holder comprising a pocket for receiving a cover of a note book, the rear wall of the pocket having a slot therein with an enlarged recess communicating with the slot, a screw having a head designed to be inserted through the enlarged recess and, having a guide portion designed to travel in the slot,said screw also having the line indicator in adiusted position. The operator can now move the a flattened upper portion for contacting with the bottom edge of the book cover, and a nut threaded on the screw for locking the screw in adjusted position.

5. A copy holder comprising a pocket for receiving a cover of a note book, the rear wall of the pocket having a slot therein with an enlarged recess communicating with the slot, a screw having a head designed to be inserted through the enlarged recess and having a guide portion designed to travel in the slot, said screw also having a flattened upper portion for contacting with the bottom edge of the book cover, and a nut threaded on the screw for locking the screw in adjusted position, said nut having a recess for forming an annular flange, said flange bearing against the back of the pocket and acting as a washer.

6. In a copy holder, a pocket having a front and rear wall and a leg pivoted to the rear wall and having an inclined edge disposed adjacent to the pivot point for contacting with the rear wall and limiting the outward swing of the leg into operative position.

7. In a copy holder, a pocket having a front and rear wall and a leg pivoted to the rear wall and having an inclined edge disposed adjacent to the pivot point for contacting with the rear wall and limiting the outward swing of the leg into operative position, the free end of the leg being fork-shaped and rubber sleeves attached to the free ends of the fork.

8. In a copy book holder a note book supporting member, the top of said member being provided with a shoulder for engaging-with one hinge of the note book, said member having a curved portion associated with the shoulder for supporting the back of the note book.

9. A note book holder comprising a back for engaging with the rear cover of the notebook, a bottom shelf inclined for supporting the bottom of the note book, and a top shelf having a shoulder for engaging with the hinge of the book,

with the back of the book.

10. A note book holder comprising a back for engaging with the rear cover of the note book, a bottom shelf inclined for supporting the bottom of the note book, and a top shelf having a shoul-i der for engaging with the hinge of the book, and also having a curved portion for engaging with the back of the book, the edge of the top shelf being turned upwardly for engaging with the second hinge of the note book when the book is in open position.

11. A copy holder comprising a note book supporting member having a pocket for receiving the cover of the note book, the front wall of the pocket having its sides bent rearwardly and secured to the rear wall for forming the sides to the pocket, the front wall also having a portion bent around the lower edge of the rear wall for forming a bottom to the pocket, the front wall then being bent back upon itself to form a shelf which will engage with the open end of the note book.

12. In a note book holder a pocket designed to receive the cover of a large note book, and an adjustable button carried by the rear wall for engaging with the bottom edges of note book covers which do not extend to the bottom of the pocket, said button being removably secured to the rear wall.

13. In a copy holder, a back having a pocket therein, the front wall of the pocket having its upper edge terminating short of the top of the rear wall of the back.

14. In a copy holder, a back having a pocket therein, the front wall of the pocket having its upper edge terminating short of the top of the rear wall of the back, the front wall having a portion thereof bent to form a bottom shelf while the rear wall has an upper portion thereof bent into a top shelf, the bottom shelf supporting the bottom of the note book, and the top shelf engaging with the two hinges of the note book, and also with the back of the note book.
