Beit known that I, T01-INC. F. SoHAFEn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Pulaski, county of Logan, and State' r of illinois, haveinventeda new `and useful Improvement in Paper-Pad Holders and Pencil Retainers, of which the following is a specilication. 4 4

The invention relates -to a device for holdingy pads such as memoranda bla-nk pads or other blankpads in convenient and accessible form, and also for retaining a pencil or other writing instrument in convenient position relative to the pad.

The object of the invention is to provide aconvenient and inexpensive paper pad holder and vpencil retainer in connection therewith, the two devices cooperating in a manner to necessitate the placing of the pencil Within the retainerl before the pad .holder can be closed for` placementy inthe pocket, or in other storage" place when not in actu-al usage. e

A further object is to prevent detachment or withdrawal of the pencil fromthe retainerwithout firstopening the pad holder', f

jlaving inislied the required writing on the pad, the pencil, 17, is sheathed within the retainer, 12, and in so doing the pencil forces the rear end 22 of pawl, 15, outward in the direction oit the dotted line, 23, cansing the locking end of the pawl, 15, to recede to the position shown in dotted line, 24, out of the path ot the locking post, 14, in which position the cover portion, 11, and pencil retainer portion, 12, are 'free to swing downward into closed position on body, 10.

.ln the drawings and specifications l have disclosed one form of my invention, however, it will be evident to those skilled in the art that various forms and constructions of the device may be made without departing from the scope of my invention, theretore l do not wish to confine myself to the enact form and construction which I have shown.

I claim:

1. A paper pad holder` and pencil retainer, comprising a body portion having a pad holder connected therewith, a movably connected cover portion having a pencil retainer therewith, together with cooperating means to prevent removal of the pencil while the two portions are in closed position.

2. A paper pad holder and pencil retainer', comprising a body portion with a pad holder thereon, a cover portion, having an integral pencil retainer therewith, hinged to said body portion, and eo-acting means on said body portion and on said cover portion to prevent the closing together of said two portions when there is no pencil within the retainer.

3. A paper pad holder and pencil retainer, comprising a body member and a movable cover member with supplemental pad holder and pencil retainer portions at tached thereto, together with coacting means on the two members to prevent the withdrawal of the pencil while tlre two members are in relatively closed position, and Vifnrther means to prevent the closing together oit the two members when the pencil is not in the retainer.

4. A. paper pad holder and pencil retainer, comprising a body member and a movable cover member with a pad holder portion suliplemental to one member and a pencil retainer portion supplemental to the ether member, together with coacting means substantially as set forth, whereby closing together of the two members is prevented when the pencil is omitted 'from its retainer, and further means to prevent the withdrawal out.' the pencil when the two members are in relatively closed position.

A paper pad holder and pencil retainer comprising a body member, and a cover member, a pencil retainer on on'e inember, and a stop on the other member across the end of the said pencil retainer when the members are in a relatively closedposition.

6. A paper pad holder and pencil retainer, comprising two hinged members, a pencil retainer with integral housing for a pawl adapted to be operated by said pencil, along the side of one member, and a stop on the other member (zo-acting with said pawl.

7. In a paper pad holder and pencil retainer, a spring pawl hinged in the pencil retainer and pawl housing portion, one end olf said pawl acting to hold the pencil in the retainer, and the other end adapted to co-act with the stop on the other member.
