, 'Thisinvention relates to grippingtools, and has particular reference to an improvement in pliers.
The invention primarily comprehendsv a 5 plierswhich includes a pair'of-'opposed members defining the handle and jaw, portions and having a connection therebetween by vir'- tue of which a binding action is set up whenI the jaws are disposed in grlppin'g relation to l an object, which binding ,action eliminates play and'serves to maintain the gripped relation of the jaws with the object but without maintaining undue pressure on the handle portion.
The invention further contemplates an improved construction of pliers in which the members thereof are joined by interengagingv means of connection formed integral with the members and which means specifically em- 9 bodies the formation of an arcuate dovet-ail groove in one of the members and an arcuate dovetail rib on the opposite member formed on the confronting faces of the overlapped sections of the members at the juncture of the handle and jaw portions thereof.
The invention further embodies means provided at an'end of the grooved portion for y limiting the opening of the aws, which means also serves to prevent the complete separation or disassembly of the members.
Other objects of the invention reside in the simplicity vof construction of the pliers, the economy with which they may be produced and the general efficiency derived therefrom. With the aboverecited and other objects 'in view, reference is had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in l'which' there is exhibitedone exa ple or embodiment of the invention, while the define the actual scope of the same.
Inthe drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of the pliers in closed condition. Figure .2 is an edge View thereof. Figures 3 and 4 are fragmentary plan views of the inner faces of the members. i
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary longitudinal sectional view taken approximately on the line indicated at 5-'5 in Figure 1.
, being of gradually claims "Figure 6 is a fragment-ary plan view of the pliers in opened condition. v v Referring to the .drawings by' characters ofA reference, the pliers include a pair of 'members 1() and 11 which define the jaws 12 .and113, the handles 14 'and-15 `and the intermediate overlapplng portions 416 and 17. In lieu of providing a pivotal connection in the form of a rivet, the inner confronting faces of the jaws 16 and 17 are respectively formed with an arcuate rib 18 and an arcuate groove 19 which arev of dovet'ail configuration in cross section, thefgroove 19 being slightly wider at the end 20 than at the end'21 and decreasing width from the end 20 to said end v21. The arc of the rib 18 and groove 19 are struck from a common center disposed between the jaw portion of" the members and the rib and groove. After the members 10 and 11' are assembled by engaging the rib 18 in the groove 19, means such las an out-struck lug 22 is provided at the end 21 of the groove to limit the opening of the jaws and to function to `prevent complete separation ordisassembly of the members.
In use and operation, closing ofthe jaws 12 and 13 upon an object to be gripped sets up al frictional binding action of the'rib' 18 in the groove 19 which operates to hold the jaws in gripped relation to the article. Due to this construction also, it has been found that a materially reduced pressure on the handles is necessaryT to the tlghtening of' the jaws while'play betweenthe jaws is absolutely eliminated while the same are in gripped relation to anobj'ect. It is also apparent that by providing the connection as an integral part of the members, the usual rivet iseliminated, thereby making lfor a cheaper construction and a reduction in the costl of assembly.
What is claimed is:
1. Pliers including a pair of opposed members each comprising a handle and a aw portion, one of the-members having an arcuate j groove, the' sides of the groove having their centers substantially at the inner portion of the jaw of the member. and an arcuate rib on the other member with the sides of the rib having their centers substantially at the in- 3. Pliers including a pair of opposed memvbers each comprising a handle portion and a jaw portion, one of said members having an arcuate groove and the other member havin an arcuate rib engaging with the groove an constituting the sole means therebetween, the arc of the groove and rib struck from a common center disposed bei` tween the jaw portions of the member and said rib and groove.
