To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK WOODHEAD, a citizen of the Units tates of America, residing in Glen Riddle, in the county of Delaware, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Pliers, of which the following is a true and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.
My present invention relates to pliers especially adapted for gripping small rods, wires and the like and the general object of my invention is the provision of such pliers with a special jaw construction adapted to insure a very positive. gripping action.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide hand pliers with gripping 'jaws of such a character that two or more wires may be positively gripped at the same time, as is desirable in making a splice.
The various features of novelty which characterize my invention are pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed to and forming a part of this specification.
For a better understanding of the invention, however, and the advantages possessed by it, reference should be had to the a'ccompanying drawings in which I have illusitrated and described a preferred form of my invention.
Of the drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation of a pairof pliers embodying my invention shown with the'jaws in their fully closed position. Fig. 2 is an elevation of a portion of the pliers with the jaws in their wide open position; Fig. 3 is a view generally similar to Fig. 2, but with parts broken away and in section and with the jaws shown partially open and gripped upon a pair of Wires; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the gripping jaw parts carried by one of the plier levers.
In the drawings: A represents one. and B the other of a pair of plier levers connected to one another by the usual pivot pin C. Except for the gripping jaw provisions to which reference is hereinafter made, the plier levers A and B and their pivotal connection may be of ordinary construction.
In the inner side of the jaw end of the lever A is formed a V shaped no ch or re The jaw end of the lever B carare pivoted to one another and are loosely connected to the lever B. As shown, each jaw D is formed of a. plurality of plate like members which are interleaved with the corresponding plate like members forming the other jaw. As shown, the upper end of the jaws D extend into a recess B formed in the lever B, and are, pivotally connected to each other and to the lever B by the pivot.

The outer end of each jaw D is tapered, and when the jaw ends of the levers A and B are brought together the tapered ends of the jaws enter the notch A, and the outer edges of the jaws D engage the inclined side walls of the notch A, thus forcing the free ends of the. two jaws l) toward one another. In consequence of this, as will be apparent from F g '3, the material to he gripped, whether a single object or a plurality of wires or the .like, will be firmly and rigidly gripped andcannot work loose, provided the jaw ends of the levers A and B are pressed together with the proper force.
Advantageously I provide suitable means for automatically spreading the two jaws l) apart when the jaw ends of the plier levers A and B are separated. The means shown for this purpose comprise bent springs (i each having a loopedhentral portion encircling the pin H carri d by the lever B and passing through the recess B. Each spring G has one end engaging the pin F carried by one of the jaws I Ii-and has its other end engaging a similar pin F carried by the other jaw D. Each pin F also serves to se cure the different plates or lamina of each jaw l) against undue relative movement. As shown best in Fig. 1, the edge wall of the recess B is shaped at B and Hire prevent a spreading or opening movement of the jaws D great enough to interfere with the entrance of the tapered ends of the jaws into the notch A when the jaw ends of the lever are brought together.
It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the plier construction illustrated is simple and highly effective for the purpose for which it is designed and that it can be constructed with the desirable strength with a relatively low cost.
While in accordance with the provisions of the statutes I have illustrated and described the best form of my invention no known to me, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art. that changes may be made in the form of apparatus disclosed without departing from the spirit of my invention and that in some casessome features of my invention may be used without acorresponding use of other features.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: i j
1. In combination, a pair of plier levers pivoted together, one of said levers being formed with a trough shaped notch or recess in the inner side of its'jaw end, a pair of gripping jaws pivoted together and carried by the jaw end of the other lever and adapted to enter said notch and engage the wall thereof when the jaw ends of said plier levers are moved toward one another, whereby said jaws are caused to approach one another.
2. In combination, a pair of plier levers pivoted together, one of said levers being. formed with a trough shaped notch or recess in the inner side of its jaw end, anda pair of gripping jaws pivoted to one another and to the jawend of the other plier lever and having tapered end portions adapted to enter said notch and engage the wall thereof when the aw ends of said levers are brought together, whereby said jaws may be caused to close upon an object resting in said notch.
3. In combination a pair of plierlevers pivoted together, one of said levers being formed with a notch inthe inner side of its jaw end, a pair of cooperating gripping jaws pivotally connected to one another and to the jaw end of the other plier lever and having end portions adapted to enter said Copies of this patent may be obtained for notch and engage the wall, thereof as the jaw ends -of said levers are moved together, whereby said jaws are caused to approach one another, and resilient means tending to spread said jaws apart.'

In combination, a pair of plier levers pivoted together, one of saidilevers being formed with a notch in the inner side of its jaw end, a pair of cooperating gripping jaws pivotally connected to one another and to the jaw end of the other lever and having end portions adapted to enter said notch and engage the wall thereof as the jaw ends of said levers are moved together, whereby said jaws are caused to approach one another, re silient means tending to spread said jaws apart, and means carried bv said other lever limiting the spreading apart of said jaws.
5. In combination, a pair of plier levers pivoted together, one of said levers being formed with a notch in the inner side of its jaw end, the jaw endof'the other lever being formed with a cavity in the inner side of its jaw end, a pair of cooperating gripping jaws entering said cavity and pivotally connected therein to said lever and to each other, and ha\'ingencl portions adapted to enter said notch and engage the wall thereof as the jaw ends of said levers are inoved'together, whereby said jaws are caused to approach one another, and resilient means mounted on said housing tending to spread said jaws apart, said cavity being so shaped that the wall thereof is adapted to limit the spreading apart of said jaws.
