WILLIAM P. ABENDROTH, OF PORT CHESTER, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHELF-SUPPORTS FOR STOlIES AND RANGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 184,278, dated November 14, 1876; application filed December 24, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. ABEND- ROTH, of Port Chester, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Shelf-Supports for Stoves or Ranges, of which the following is a specification:
This invention pertains to certain improvements in the method of supporting and attaching shelves or the extension of covers to stoves or ranges, where it is often desirable to make some additional extension to the top of the same for a time, and then fold it out of the Way to save room and the invention consists in attaching the shelf or extension ofthe cover or top, as the case may be, to the stove by a pivoted connection of peculiar construction, at one side or end, and then supporting the outer end or side by ajointed bracket so constructed as to drop into a firm supporting position upon the shelf, and which will fold up out of the way when the shelf is lowered, as plainly shown in the drawings.
Figure 1 represents a shelf or extension to the top of a range or stove; and Fig. 2 shows the same with the shelf suspended by its hinges, and the bracket folded up between it and the rear of the stove to which it is attached.'
At A is represented the shelf, attached to the end of a cooking range or stove, as at B, by a pivoted attachment, as at G. Said attachment consists of a curved and downwardlydropping arm, pivoted at its end to a lug under the downwardly-projecting flange of a stove, out ofthe Way of dust and cinders and liquids that may be spilled from cooking utensils, which would be liable to injure or rust the hinge and cause it to bind, if exposed. For supporting the outer end there is provided a folding bracket, as at D, thetwo members of which are pivoted together in the middle and furnished with a shoulder or projection on each side of the pivot, to serve as a look, but so as to permit the two parts to drop a little below a line drawn through the pivot attached to the shelf and the one on the side of the stove, and whereby it will, by its own weight, tend to keep locked, and thereby support, the shelf, but may be easily unlocked by simply raising the central pivot above the line of the twoextreme points or pivots, when the center will fold up, and the bracket will assume the position represented at Fig. 2, between the shelf and the end of the stove or range.
The stove-top is constructed or provided with an inclined depending flange, e, beneath which is pivoted the shelf, so that said shelf will be out of the way of dust, cinders, and liquids that may be spilled from cooking utensils, which would be liable to injure or rust the hinge and cause it to bind, if exposed.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the shelf A and its hinged supports D D, of the attachment 0, located under the depending flangee of a stovetop, substantially as and for the purpose described.
WILLIAM P. ABENDROTH.
