TOY TOP Filed Aug. so, 1930 im /6 JU Zauffzz cgi o Patented Jan. 19, 1932 'entre JOHN znunnnr, or nn'rnorr, .ation-relaxt '.roY Tor Application filed August 30, 1830. Serial No. 479,059.
f The present invention relates to toys and more particularly to toy tops or the lilre.
An object of this invention is to provide a top having a rotatable elementv which so y. constructed as to permit the ready spinning thereofn by a child or the like.
Another object of this invention is to provide in a top of this character a means by which the top may be readily spun or ro- I tated, the spinning means comprising an elongated tubular handle structure, which is Yadapted to support the top in the initial rotation or spinning thereof.
A further object of this invention is to provide a combined handle and top which may bereadily and cheaply manufactured. i
rEhe above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be i described in and inv part be understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein,
Fig. 1 is a detail side elevation of a top constructed according to the preferred embodiment of this invention, whicl is mounted in a handle, the handle` being shown in longitudinal section.
Fig. 2 is a detail top plan view of the device. f K f Fig. 3 isan enlarged sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. y, i
l is a sectional view partly in detaily talren substantially on the line 4 -11 ofFig. 1. lng yto the vdrawings wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 designates generally a top constructed according to the preferred' embodiment of this invention, andthe numeral 11 designates generallyv a handle which'is constructed ac cording to the preferred yembodiment of this invention, and adapted to removably receive the top 10. i
Thehandle 11 comprises a relatively elongated tubular member which is provided at one end thereof witha pair .of diametrically positioned-slots 17, which open through the outer end of the handle 11, the outer ends of the slots terminating in flaring or rounded portions 18 so as to facilitate the placement of the spindle 13 therein. The handle 11 may be provided with suitable depressions 19 in-KKA termediate the ends thereof so as to facilitate the grasping of the handle in the hand.
ln the operation of this device the cord 16 may be wound on the spool 14, the free end ing against the rear end of the slot 17.
The cord 16 may be pulled rearwardly and the rearward movement of the cord 16 will rotate the top 10 within the handle 11. W hen the cord 16 has been completely unwound or withdrawn from the spool member 14:, the` handle may be pulled rearwardly of the top 10 so as to permit the top 10 to have free rotation on anydesired fiaty surface.
lt will be obvious from the foregoing that a relatively simple toy has been constructed, l' which may be readily operated by a child and that the toy kmay be constructed of any-desired material. y
n lt is, of course, understood thatvarious changes yand modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the yabove specifically described embodiment ofy this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope kof the following claim:
What is claimed is o A toy of the character described comprising in combination, an elongated hollow :11.041
handle having a Cylindrical bore extending longitudinally of said handle, a pair of dialnetrieally opposed open ended slots eonnnunicating with Said bore at the forward end thereof7 a rotatable top, said rotatable top Comprising a body portion, a Spindle, and a substantially spherical-shaped spool secured to said spindle intermediate the ends thereof and rotatably engageable Within said bore, said spool havin@ a peripheral groove therein and havingr a diameter greater than the Width of said slots, and a flexible nieniber removably Wound about said spool and positi-oned in the grooved portion thereof, Said flexible nieinber having; one end thereof free and projected rearwardly through the tubular handle whereby to perinit pulling of the oxible nieniber through the handle7 sai-.d flexible member upon rearward nioveinent thereof through the handle being adapted te rotate said top on said handle, rearward inovenient of the handle upon unwinding of the flexible element releasing Said top nieniber for rotation independently of said handle.
In testimony whereof hereunto iny signature.
JOHN ZAURRIN.
