It is an object of our invention to provide a compact comparatively simple but highly efficient winding device, which may be driven from a suitable source ofpower. and which' will permit a`n operator to control the winding of the material upon a spool by the manipulation ofl a convenientv operating handle or hand piece.
It is a further object to provide a Winding device which is connectible to a source of power such as a motor, and which is provided with a slip clutch by which a uniform tension may be placed at all times upon material wound and by which fracture or damage to material will be prevented. a J
A further object is to provide a compact,
portable winding device, the working partsy of which are enclosed in a-casing adapted to be held in the hand, especially adapted for beauty parlor work, to wind or coil locks of hair about a spool detachable from the winding shaft.

Another object of the invention is to'provide a small, compact, portable device adapted to be held in the hand, capable of use as a winding device and moreover having another important use or function in connection with an attachment, namely, that of an auto- ,brush out human-'hair in connection with various treatments iven by beauty shops.

The clutch member'19 is adapted to be drivably connected with the forward end of a relatively small sleeve 20 loosely mounted on the rear portion of shaft 15 and havin clutchvelements 20 at its forward end. The s eeve 2O is provided with a flange or l head 20 l at its rear end. and adapted to ber abutted against a concave disc shoulder "formedin the clutch sleeve,12. -A friction sleeve y21 of compressible material surrounds the sleeve 20 adjacent the rear lend thereof and is adapted to be compressed between a pair of washers 22 also mounted on sleeve 20 at theop osite ends of friction sleeve 21. The operation of our device may be brieiy described as follows When one of ythe windin spools S is slipped over the projecting end o shaftl and 1vably attached thereto by means ofthe bayonet joint, the 'device may be employed'to automatically wind human hair for permanent waving. The outerend ofa lock of hair is inserted `between the retaining arm 30 and the sleeve of spool S and the hand piece 17 is pushed to extliemeforward position,there by rigidly connecting shaft-15 with the handle or casing 8. The operator may then turn the device once or twice by hand, securing the lock to the spool. The hand piece 17 may then be moved vto extreme rearward position causing clutch members 19 and 2()a to intermesh and thereby driving shaft 15 through its clutch engagement with the driving sleeve 12. The slip clutch engagement is made through the compressible friction sleeve 21 engaging the cylindrical forward portion 12b of clutch sleeve 12. In winding human hair the tension of spring 24 is so regulated by manipulating adjustment nut 23 as to apply the degree of friction desired between the 'slip clutch parts. The position of the clutch sleeve 12 may be slightly varied as desired by screwingor unscrewing the externall threaded sleeve 11. The hair or other flexible article may be wound upon spool S automatically cont-rolled by the finger piece 17 handle or casing 8 being of such size that it can be conveniently grasped in the alm of the hand with the thumb applied to nger piece 17. In Fig. 2 the device is illustrated on an enlarged scale.v
lVhen a lock of hair has been completely wound, the finger. piece 17 is drawn forward, disconnecting the power upon winding shaft 15 and rigidly connecting said shaft with the casing to prevent unwinding of spool S. The spool may then be readily detached from the winding shaft, a 'lock of hair secured to the spool in any suitable manner andthe coiled hair on the spool may be inserted in a suitable tubular heater of a permanent waving machine.
Our device may be quickly and easily converted into an automatic brush by removing the spool S and inserting the brush attachment B, sleeve 31 beingk secured by the bayonet joint to shaft 15. W'ith the automatic brush attachment the hair may be quickly and evenly brushed, uniform tension being applied without damage to the hair, due to the slipvclutch ldriving mechanism of shaft 15. In beauty parlors it is desirable to brush the hair thoroughly before separating the locks for permanent Waving vrand in treatment of the scalp for dandruf or other scalp diseases, it is also desirable vto thoroughlyv brush the hair and the scalp. With our device this may be done quickly and efficiently and without injury to the hair,- assuming that the device is regulated to inteiapose the proper friction betweendriving sleeve 12 and the sleeve 20.
