This invention relates to improvements in mechanically operated clippers and vibrators. The general object of this invention is to provide a power operated tonsorial device including means for including interchangeable hair clipping and massage means.
Another object of'my invention is to provide a device of the class described having a handle portion adapted to be held in the operators hand in which is encasedan electric motor for actuating the attachment.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved massage device having both rotatable and reciprocal movement.
Other objects of this invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein Fig. 1 is a top plane view partly in section of my device showing the clipper attachment in an operative position.
Fig. 2 is a side View of the clipper attachment detached from the operating device.
Fig. 3 is a side view partly in section of my device showing the massage attachment in an operative position.
Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 3 and Fig. 5 is an enlarged section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings by reference characters 1 have indicated my improved clipper and massage device generally at 10.
This device as shown in the accompanying drawing comprises a handle portion 11 having a clipper attachment 12 (see Fig. 1) and a massage attachment 14 (see Fig. rllhe handle 11 is shown as comprising a body portion 15 having a closure 16 at one end and a cap 17 at the opposite end. The closure 16 and a cap 17 may be secured to the body in any suitable manner as by screws 18 and 19.
r1`he handle 11 is preferably of a somewhat elliptical shape shown in the drawings so as to be conveniently held in an operators hand. An electric motor 20 is positioned in the handle 11 and may be secured thereto by screws 21 as shown or in any other suitable manner. rllhe motor 20 is preferably made in a shape to conform to the shape of the handle 11 but ma be of any approved type.
s shown in the drawing electric current is furnished to the motor by a cable 22 which passes through the closure 16 and connects to an electric push switch 23. rllhe switch 23 indesired type wherein pressure must be maintained on .the push button to make electric contact through the switch.
For maintaining pressure upon the switch push button 24 while the device is being operated 1 provide a lever 25 pivoted to the body portion 15 as at 26. For normally urging the lever 25 away from the handle I provide a coiled spring 27 and for limiting the outward movement of the lever I provide'a cross bar as shown at 28 in Figs. 1 and 3.
'llhe cap 17 includes a reduced end portion 30, has an aperture 31 therethrough and terminates in a reduced'externally screw threaded tip 32.
Fach of the attachments 12 and 14 includes a shank 34 which is apertured for the reception of a sleeve 35 in which an operating shaft 36 is mounted. r1`he sleeve 35 is preferably secured to the shank 34 by pins 37, as shown, or 1n .any other suitable manner. A nut 38 is positioned on the sleeve 35 and includes internal screw threads to match the screw threads on the tip 32 of the cap 17. This nut 38 is freely rotatable on the sleeve 35. A collar 39 secured to the sleeve in any desired manner prevents longitudinal movement of the nut along the sleeve. i
'llhe exposed end ofthe operating shaft 36 is provided with a plurality of splines as shown the screw threaded tip at 40 which are adapted to be positioned in corresponding grooves 41 in the end of the armature shaft 42 of the motor 20.
To operatively position either the clipper attachment 12 or the massage attachment 44 to the handle 11 it is only necessary to insert the sleeve 35 in the aperture 31 of the reduced end 30 of the cap and screw the nut 38 on When the sleeve 35 is placed in the aperture 31 the splines 40 on the end of the shaft 36 will be positioned in the grooves 41 of the armature shaft and when the motor 2O is operated the armature shaft will rotate the shaft 36 to actuate the attachment.
rllhe particular construction of the clipper actuating mechanism other than what has previously been set forth such as the sleeve 35, shaft 36 and nut 38 may be of any desired construction.
The massage device 14 includes besides the shank 34 a body portion 45 having recesses 46 and 47 therein. rllhe shaft 36 extends into the recess 46 and is provided with a bevel gear 46 which meshes with another bevel gear 49 chides a push button 24 and may be of any on a shaft 56 supported in the housing 45.
lltll The shaft is positioned in a recess 51 in another shaft 52 which is positioned in the recess 47. The shaft 52 is slidable on the shaft 50 and is adaptd to be driven by the shaft 50 through the medium of a key 53. The shaft 52 is adapted to be retained in position in the aperture 47 by a set screw 54 which includes a reduced end 55 which is positioned in an endless spiral groove 56 in the shaft 52. Thus it will be seen that when the shaft 50 revolves the shaft 52 the shaft 52 will also be caused to reciprocate along the shaft 50.
To the protruding end of the shaft 52 I have shown a massage device indicated generally by 58. The massage device shown includes a rubber vacuum cup 59 secured to a hub 60 which is provided with a recess 61 for the reception of the end of the shaft 52. The hub 60 is shown as attached to the shaft 52 by a bayonet joint 62 of Which a pin, 63 is secured to the shaft 52 and a slot 64 is formed in the hub 60. If desirable I may provide a sufficiently strong flat spring 65 at the bottom of the recess 61 to maintain tension on the bayonet joint.
The housing 45 is provided adjacent its lower end with a counter bore 67 so that when the device Ais operated the hub 60 of the massage device wlll have clearance to reciprocate. l
Any other suitable mea-ns of attaching the massage device 58 to the shaft may be employed or the massa e device may be rigidly secured to the shaftut by making it detachable various forms of massage devices may be quickly attached to the shaft.
What I claim is A 1. In a tonsorial implement, a hollow handle, a closure secured to one end of said handle,
a cap secured to the opposite end of said handle, said cap including a reduced end portion and a threaded tip, an aperture extending through said end portion and said tip, an electric motor positionedin said handle and secured thereto, said motor including an armature shaft, a control switch for said motor, a work member having a shank, a threaded member on said work member and engaging said threaded tip and means to drive said work member from said armature shaft.
2. In a device of the class described, a hollow handle, said handle having an end portion including a reduced threaded tip, an aperture extending through said tip and a work member having a shank, an aperture in said shank, asleeve in said aperture and extending beyond ,the end ofesaid shank, said sleeve being fixed tosaid shank, a threaded nut positioned on said sleeve, a collar on said sleeve adapted to retain said nut adjacent the end of said shank, said nut being adapted to engage said threaded ti to removably secure said shank to said han e, a rotatable shaft positioned in said sleeve, said shaft havin its end extending be` yond the free end of sai sleeve, the end of said shaft being provided with splines, said sleeve when said nut is inl engagement with said threaded tip beine positioned in said aperture in said-tip, a shaft in said handle, the end of said rotatable shaft being operatively connected to said handle shaft and means to drive said handle shaft.
3. In a device of the class described, a hollow handle including a cap, an aperture extending through the end portion of said ca p, a drive shaft in said handle, a shank, an aperture in said shank, a sleeve in said aperture and extending beyond the end of said shank and said sleeve being rigidly fixed to said shank, a 'rotatable member on said sleeve, a collar on said sleeve adapted to retain said member adjacent the end of said shank, means on said member adapted to coact with the end of said cap to removably secure said shank to said handle, a rotatable shaft positioned in said sleeve, said shaft having its end extending beyond the free end of said sleeve, said sleeve when said shank is attached to said cap being positioned in said aperture in said cap. means to connect said drive shaft to said rotatable shaft whereupon when said drive shaft is rotated said first shaft will be rotated.
4. In a device of the class described, a handle, an electric motor in said handle including` an armature shaft, a shank removably attached tosaid handle, a second shaft in said handle in engagement with said arinaturi` shaft, a body portion on said shank, a recess in said shank, a bevel gear secured to said second shaft and positioned in said recess, a third shaft supported by said body portion, a second bevel gear, said gear being secured to said third shaft and positioned in said recess and being in mesh with said first bevel gear, a second recess in said body portion, a fourth shaft positioned in second recess, an aperture insaid fourth shaft, said third shaft being positioned in said aperture and keyed to said fourth shaft, said fourth shaft being mounted for reciprocation upon said third shaft, a spir al groove in said fourth shaft, a set screw in said body portion having a reduced end adapted to be positioned in said spiral groove whereupon when said fourth` shaft is rotated it willbe caused to reciprocate and means for attaching an implement to said fourth shaft.
