Description
PATENT OFFICE` PHILIP M. HAAS, OF YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN BALUSTERS FOR STAIRWAVS.
Specification' forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,92 l, dated October 31, 1876; application filed April 8, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP M. HAAs, of Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Baluster for Stairways, oi' which the followingis a specification:
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which represent the baluster and the sectional parts thereof, A represents the base section; B, the middle section, and O the top, which is socketed in the stair-rail. The sections are secured together by dowels a a' of the top and bottom sections, which fit into sockets b in the middle piece. The parts may or may not be also glued together. The base is fastened, in the usual manner, tothe tread of the stair. The middle section B may be oi' beach or ash, while the parts A and C may be 0i' walnut 0r other suitable wood. In fact, such woods may be used in any of the sections, as may suit the general design of the building. My objet is to put these balusters upon the market as a new manufacture.
It has heretofore been the custom to insert the different woods in panels, or to veneer them on. This has its disadvantages, which are apparent to those skilled in the art. My
invention permits of the use of solid masses of dierent-colored woods, and also permits of a closer packing in the shipment of the article. It also has the advantage of' economy, as small pieces of diifereut kinds of wood may be used. Besides, should one portion of an integral baluster become bruised or broken it becomes useless and unlit for other purposes. In my sectional baluster a partonly is thrown aside in such contingency. The balusters may be made square, round, octagonal, or any variation of these shapes.
I have a machine for making these sectional balusters, which I shall make the subject ot'a separate application for Letters Patent, and my preferred method of making need not be particularly described, the foregoing specitication, taken in connection with the drawings, being ample to enable carpenters to make and use the article.
I claim- As a new article of manufacture, a baluster for stairways, made of wood or dilerent woods and ot' connected sections A B G, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have aixed my signature in the presence oi' two witnesses.
PHILIP M. HAAS.
