SPRING FOR BED RIDDEN PATIENTS Filed March 19, 1930 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 rm M I nventor A llorney Patented Dec. 29, 1931 narrensraras PATENT- OFFICE GEORGE W. JARDINE, 0F WALTHAM, MASSACHUSETTS SPRING- FOR BED-BIDDEN PATIENTS 7 Application filed March 19, 1930. Serial No. 437,114
vide a frame 0 the character referred to that is strong, compact and durable, very simple 1n its method of assembly, thoroughly reli- -l able for its intended purpose, and comparatively 1116Xp6l1SlV to manufacture and t handle.
VJith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated, in the accompanying drawings wherein is disclosed an embodistood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to wthout departing from the spirit of the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference.
characters designate like p arts corresponding throughout the several v1ews:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the frame in ac- V openlng 26 through ltSflXlS to form a bearcordance with the present invention,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof,
Fig.3 is a vertical, transverse section through the frame,
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary, detailed Referring to the drawings in detail, 7 inr dicates generally an open, rectangular frame having side rails 8, 9 connected at their op-g posite ends to the transversely extensible end rails, indicated generally gat 10 and 11. The end rail 10 is formed of two tubular sections,
12, 13 telescopically fitting into each other on confronting ends. Likewise, the end rail .11
is formed of two tubular sections 14, 15 telecopically fitting into each other on confronting ends. ,7 I 7 On the outer free end of the femalev sections 12 and 14, of the end rails, are mounted V theopposite ends of the bushing 25.
T- fittings 16, 17 In the stems. 18, 19 of these fittings, are anchored the opposite ends. of the one end rail 9, while L- shaped fittings 20, 21
on the outer end ofthe male sections 13 and 15 form connections with the opposite *endsi 5 of the other side rail 8 of the frame. To one branch of the'head of the T- shaped fittings 16, 17 isthreadl-y connected the outer end of the female, sections 12, 14 of the end rails. The other-.branchof the T-shaped fit-1. tings 16, 17, are open to provide pockets 22 at the corners of the frames to receive the socket Wrench 23 for the purpose to be pres- .ently described. p o.
Each end rail 10, 11 is extensible in the same manner, and it is believed that the following description of one will clearly teach the operation of the other. I i
The following description is confined to the end rail '11 of the frame which is clearly illustrated in enlarged viewsin Figs..4and 5 ofthe drawings. The upper end of the female section 14 that is confined in the one branch of the T-shaped fitting 17 is internally threaded as at 24, to receive a eta-3' tionary bushing 25 that is providedwith an ing. V V The confined inner end of the male section 15 is threaded as at 27 on its inner periphery; and is likewise provided with a bushing 28"" having a threaded opening 287 through the axis which is in alinement with the opening .26. The operating bolt 29 adjacent its outer end is formed with a smooth round portion,
30 between shoulders 31, 32 tobear against The smooth portion 30 is rotatably jj oiir i l nale'd in the opening 26. Above the outer Shoulder 31 the shankofthe p t ng bolt-1:9"
29 is formed with a polygonal head 33'seated,
. inthe'socket 22 and over this head33 fits a jwrench for operating this operatingbolt' 29.
The major portion of the shank of the operating bolt .29, from its'inner end, is pro-5 vided with threads 34 and the length of this bolt ,is such that it extends through the threaded opening 28 in the threaded bushing 28. The free end of'thebolt is confined.
in the male section 15land the length of this'lf' bolt is to be such as to provide for the maximum expansion of the frame under ordinary conditions.
Transversely circumposed about the side rails 8, 9 are a pair of textile fabrics, continuous bands indicated generally at 35, 36, formed of canvas. The opposite ends of each band 35, 36 are spaced inwardly from the end rails 10, 11 while the confronting ends of each band are spaced suitably from each other to provide a pocket 37 therebetween that is coextensive with the width of the frame.
This space or pocket 37 is located a little to one side of the center longitudinally of the frame, so that a bed pan may be placed under the space to be used by the patient lying on the bands 35,36. The bands 35, 36 are formed of a single sheet of canvas 38 the ends of which are stitched together as at 39.
In view of the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided an open, elongated frame, that is transversely extensible, having a band of canvas about the frame with the axis of the band horizontally and at right angles to the extensibility of the frame.
In view of this arrangement, the tension on the canvas band 35, 36 on which the invalidated patient rests, may be made for the comfort of the patient while lying in bed, and in event it is desired to lift the patient bodily, the tension on the bands will draw them taut enough to support the patient while he or she is being carried. 7 The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in considerable detail merely for the purpose of exemplification since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description.
It is to be understood that by describing in detail herein any particular form, structure,
or arrangement, it is not intended to limit the invention beyond the terms of the several claims, or the requirements of the prior art.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is A bed structure comprising a substantially rectangular frame including side and end bars, said end bars each comprising a male tubular section and a female tubular section telescopically mounted on the male section, said male and female sections each having one end portion internally threaded, said one end portion of the female section also being externally threaded, a bushing threaded in said one end portion of the male section having a threaded bore, a bushing threaded in said one end portion of the female section having a smooth bore, a bolt having a smooth portion journaled in the second named bushing and a threaded portion threaded through the first named bushing, collars fixed on the smooth portion of the bolt engageable with the ends of the second named bushing for re- GEORGE W.
