Description

April 27, 1954 F. D. COLLINS BED SLAT CONSTRUCTION Filed Nov. 10, 1950 ATTORNEY5 Patented Apr. 27 1954 UNITED STATE NT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to bed slat construction.
An object of this invention is to provide a bed slat construction wherein a series of slats are secured together by means of pivotally connected together links so that the intermediate slats will be disposed evenly apart from each other and from the end slats.
Another object of this invention is to provide a bed slat construction embodying linked together slats which are so constructed and arranged as to be prevented from lateral shifting.
A further object of this invention is to provide a bed slat construction which is simple in construction and can be readily mounted on conventional bed frames.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction disclosed in the drawings and specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a bed slat construction embodying this invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an end elevation of the devicein aplied position showing the bed frame in section.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional View taken on the line 44 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral IIJ designates a pair of end slats which are adapted to verted L-shape in transverse section having a horizontal upper side II and a flange or depending side I2. The opposite ends of the flange I2 are out off as indicated at I3 thereby forming a lip or supporting tongue I4 which is adapted to overlie one of the side rails I5 of the bed frame. The cut-away end portions of the flanges I2 also provide a means whereby the end slats I Ii will be held against endwise or lateral movement with respect to the bed rails I5.
A pair of T-shaped intermediate slats I 6 are disposed between the end slats I0, and each intermediate slat It includes an upper side I? and a depending flange or stem I8. The opposite ends of the depending flange I8 also are cut away as indicated at Ita so that the ends of the intermediate slats It will lie on the upper sides of the bed rails I5.
The end slat It are connected to an adjacent intermediate slat It by means of a pair of crossed links I 9 which are pivotally connected together Jetween the ends thereof as at 28. One of the links I9 is pivotally connected as indicated at M to an end rail It, and the other of the links I9 is pivotally connected as at 22 to the adjacent intermediate slat It. The upper side i I of the end slat it is provided with an elongated slot 23 within which a headed pin 24 carried by the opposite end of a link i 9 is adapted to slidably engage. The adjacent intermediate slat I6 is also provided with an elongated slot 25 within which a headed pin 26 carried by the other of the links I9 is adapted to slidably engage. The two intermediate slats I8 have disposed therebetween a pair of links 27 pivotally connected together between the ends thereof as indicated at 28.
One end of each link 27 is pivotally connected as at 2%? to an intermediate slat i 5, and the other end of each link 27 is provided with a headed pin 36 which slidably engages in an elongated slot 3I carried by the upper side I7. The pivotally connected together links I 9 and 27 provide a lazy tong connection between the slats it and it so that these slats will be held in parallel relation when extended or retracted.
In the applied position of the structure hereinbefore described the slats It and and adequately supported at the end and between the ends thereof, and there will not be any possibility of any of the slats becoming disengaged from the bed frame or bed rails due to the fact that the slats are held against endwise movement or lateral movement with respect to the bed rails.
What is claimed is:
A bed slat construction comprising a pair of end slats of inverted L-shape in transverse section, slat being horizontal and the vertical, said vertical side terend thereof inwardly of the ends of said horizontal side to thereby form slat supporting lips, spaced elongated slots in the horizontal sides of said end slats, a pair of intermediate slats of T-shape in transverse section, each including a horizontal upper side and a vertical stem, the opposite end of said stems terminating inwardly from the ends of said upper sides to thereby form slat supporting lips, a first and second pair of pivotally connected together links, means pivotally connecting an end of one link of each pair to an end slat, means pivotally connect- 3 ing one end of the other link of each pair to an intermediate slat, said horizontal sides of the intermediate slat having elongated longitudinally extending slots formed therethrough in staggered relation on opposite sides of said stems, a third pair of pivotally connected together links, means pivotally connecting an end of one link of said third pair to an intermediate slat and means pivotally connecting one end of the other link of said third pair to the other intermediate slat and means comprising pins extending through said slots slidably connecting the opposite ends of said a staggered relationship of adjacent pairs of links.
