SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,678, dated February 14, 1882.

Application filed January 7, 1852.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED S. BURNHAM, a citizen of the United States, resident of Parkersburg, in the county of Butler and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Bed-Bottoms; and'I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,

and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a perspective of my iifiproved bed-bottom, and Fig. 2 is a bottom view.

This invention has relation to extension bedbottoms, especially adapted to be packed in the lower portion of a bureau or cabinet-case; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the sectional sliding bars forming the side rails, the transverse sliding slats carrying the springs and mattress or mattress-cloth, and the cross-levers connected by their centers to each other and by their ends to said slats; also, in the combination, with said devices, of the mattress-roller or revolving support, all as hereinafter set forth, and especially pointed out in the claims appended.

1n the accompanyingdrawings, the letter A designates a bureau or cabinet-case, having a cavity or recess, B, in its lower portion for the reception of the; bed-bottom D when the latter is packed away. On bearings E in the upper part of the recess B is the mattressroller 0, to which is attached one end of the mattress or mattress-cloth I and below said roller is the space G, into which the bed-bottom slides, resting on the bottom H of the recess. The front of the recess is open when the bed-bottom is extended; but when the latter is folded awayit is closed by the footboard K.

The side rails, L, each consist of a series of short sliding bars, N, which are designed to be connected together by tongue-and-groove slide-connections, so that they will lie side by side, with their upper surfaces on the same level, the construction adopted in connecting the sliders of ordinary extension-tables serving excellently well for this purpose. The first and last of the sectional sliders are respectively connected to the frame of the case A and to the foot-board K. ing-leg, a, having a caster. On the sliders of the side rails rest the slats S of the bed-bottom, which carry the bed-springs R, suitably arranged to support the mattress. The first and last slats are designed to be secured to and at opposite ends of the first and last sliders of the side rails, while the intermediate slats are left free to slide thereon, provision being made to keep them parallel and in proper relative position. For this purpose slots 1) are made in the direction of thelength of the slat, near each end, and by means of pins 0 the ends of cross-levers dare connected thereto, said cross-levers being in turn pivoted centrally to each other, as indicated at e, and forming a compound parallel-motion system of levers, which regulates and controls the movements of the slats, so that they will work uniformly and simultaneously when being extended or being moved back into the case. By this construction crowding or massing of the slats is prevented, and they are made to work with facility.

When the mattress-cloth is secured to the foot-board as Well as to the roller, a crank, 2, may be applied to the latter, and by turningit the bed-bottom may be brought into the lower spacein the recess B, while the mattress or mattress-cloth is wound on the roller above it.

Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, lS

1. In an extension bed-bottom, the sectional sliding bars N, forming the side rails, the transverse slats S, slotted at b and carrying the bed-springs, and the series of cross-levers d, pivoted at their centers to each other and at their ends to the slots of the slats, substantially as specified.

2. The combination, with the recessed case A, having the mattressroller G and bottom H, of the foot-board K,sectional sliding side rails, L, the slotted slats S, the series of crosslevers d, pivoted to each other and to the slats, and the mattress or mattress-cloth, substantially as specified.
