CHAIR-MOVING APPARATUS'.
Application filed July 23, 1924. Serial No. 727,759.
To a whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLIE H. LUoUs, acitizen of the United States, residing at West lirankiort, in the county of Franklin and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chair-Moving Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in furniture and has for an object the pro vision of means for connecting a plurality of chairs with a table, whereby the chairs may be simultaneously moved to an out-t the-way position beneath the table or into position for use. 1
Another ob'ect of the invention is the provision of means of the above character which is simple in construction, reliable in use and may be easily adjusted to connect two or more chairs to a table.
lVit-h the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and, details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the inven tion in applied posit-ion.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan with two of the chairs shown by dotted lines in position for use.
Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional vie-w.
Figure 4 is a vertical transverse section.
Figure 5 is a horizontal section.
Figure 6 is an enlarged detail section on the line 6-6 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the invention is shown as applied to a table, the top of which is indicated at 10, while the chairs which are connected to the table by means of the pres ent invention, are indicated at 11.
Secured longitudinally beneath the table are spaced bearing strips 12 and mounted for rotation within these strips are posts 13, the latter being tour in number. These posts are provided with cross sectionally rectangular portions lt upon. which are socured horizontally extending crank arms 15, the said arms being pivotally connected to short links 16, while the latter are in turn pivotally connected to relatively long links 17, The links 17 are connected by means of sliding heads 18 mounted upon a rod 19- which is secured longitudinally beneath the table between the strips 12. Secured upon the rod 19 are clamps 20 which are connected to the links 17 by means of links 21.
. It will be seen by reference to Figure 2 of the drawings that the parts just described are arranged 111 duplicate beneath the bot tom of the table and the sliding heads 18 are connected. by means of a rod 22 which has pivotally connected to its outer end as shown at 23, an operating handle 24:. By moving the rod 22 longitudinally the heads 18 are moved along the guide rod 19 and through the connection of these heads with the crank arms 15, the latter are swung in-- ward or outward so as to rotate the posts 13.
The lower ends of the posts 13 are rotatably mounted in a frame which includes transverse bars 25 and longitudinal bars 26, the said frame being suitably braced from the bottom of the table as shown at 27. The posts 13 are provided adjacent their lower ends with cross sectionally rectangular portions 28 '(Fig. 6) which have mounted thereon horizontally disposed arms 29, while the opposlte extremities of the bars 25 have pivotally secured thereto links 30. These links and the arms 29 are connected by means of arms 31, whose outer ends are secured to the chairs 11 as shown at 32. Thus, when the posts 13 are rotated in the manner previously described, the arms 31 will through the medium of the arms 29 be moved inward or outward as the case may be and will be guided in such movement by the links 30. Thus, by operating the rod 22, the chairs may be moved inward beneath the table, or outward as shown in Figure 2 ot the drawings.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed it 1. A chair controlling apparatus comprising in combination with a table, spaced rotatable standards, means secured to the table to provide bearings for the upper ends of the standards, a bearing frame connecting the lower ends of the standards, a lower horizontally movable frame including a chair attaching arm secured to each of the standards and movable therewith, a crank arm secured to each of the standards, slides mounted beneath the table, means for guiding the slides, means operatively connecting the slides and crank arms, whereby the latter may be moved to rotate the standards and means connected to the standards whereby the latter may be operated.
' 2. A chair controlling apparatus comprising in combination with a table, spaced rotatably mounted standards, means secured to the table to provide bearings for the upper ends of the standards, a bearing frame connecting the lower ends of the standards, a lower horizontally movable frame including a chair attaching arm secured to each of the standards and movable therewith a crank arm secured to each of the standards, slides mounted beneath the table, means for guiding the slides, means operatively connecting the slides and crank arms, whereby the latter may be moved to rotate the standards and means connected to the slides whereby the latter may be operated.
3. A chair controlling apparatus comprising in combination with a table, spaced rotatably mounted standards, means secured to the table to provide bearings for the upper ends of the standards, a bearing frame connecting the lower ends of the standards, a lower horizontally movable frame including a chair attaching arm secured to each of the standards and movable therewith, a crank arm secured to each of the standards, slides mounted beneath the table, a guide rod for the slides, a toggle link connection between the slides and crank arms, a stationary member, links connecting the stationary member and toggle link connection, whereby movement of the slides will actuate the crank arms, and means connected to the slides whereby the latter may be operated.
4 A chair controlling apparatus comprising in combination with a table, spaced rotatably mounted standards, means secured to the table to provide bearings for the upper ends of the standards, a bearing frame connecting the lower ends of the standards, a lower horizontally movable frame including' a chair attaching arm secured to each of the standards and movable therewith, a crank arm secured to each of the standards, slides mounted beneath the table, a guide rod for the slides, a toggle link connection between the slides and crank arms, anchor blocks, links having one of their ends pivotally secured to the anchor blocks and their other ends p-ivotally secured to the toggle link connection, whereby movement of the slides will actuate the crankarms, and means connected to the slides whereby the latter may be operated.
In testimony whereof I atria my signature.
