To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANDREW BUDA, a citizen of Poland, residing at Hamilton, Province of Ontario, and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beds, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in beds, and it is the principal object of the invention to provide a bed which can be quickly and readily converted from a single into a double bed and vice versa.

A further object of the invention is to provide a bed of this character, the bars of which can be locked in their extended position if the bed is to be used as a double bed.

These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in Figure 1 is an end elevation of a bed constructed according to the present invention.

Figure 4 is a detail view of the rack and gear connection between two extension bars.

The bed 10 of ordinary metal or like construction, having end posts 11 and rollers 12 is provided with the customary head or foot board or parts 13.

To the end posts 11 are connected upper cross-bars 14 and lower cross-bars 15, which are hollow, and made in two parts both telescoping in opposite ends of a central sleeve 16, while screw threaded bolts 1S provided with manipulating heads 19 enter through sockets 20 of the sleeve 16 and carry heads 2l within the bars 14.

Between the bars 15, are secured to the side bars 22 connecting the posts 11 on one side of the bed 10, the ends of bars 22, each provided with a rack 23 upon part of its upper inner edge and extending to about three quarters of the length of the bars 15.

Each bar 24 has a rack 25 upon part of its lower inner edge, oppositely disposed to the rack 23, and a gear 26 on a longitudinal shaft 27 is in mesh with racks 23 and 25. The shaft 27 extends longitudinally through the bed 10 and projects with one of its ends beyond the cross-bar 15, where it is squared as at 28 for the reception of a crank adapted to operate the shaft to rotate the gear and displace the bars 22 and 24 in opposite directions.

In order to facilitate this operation, the lower bar 22 is provided at its free end with a forked link 29 carrying a roller 30 at its upper end rolling along the upper edge of bar 24, which at its free end is provided with a similar forked link 31 carrying a roller 32 rolling along the upper edge of bar 22.

From the foregoing description, the operation of the bed will be clear. If the bed is to be extended from a single bed to a double bed, a crank is attached to the square end 28 of shaft 27 and the shaft is rotated, which operation will rotate the gear 26 which in consequence of its engagement with racks 25 and 23 will move the bars 22 and 24 in opposite directions so that the bars 22 are moved apart and the bars 14 and 15 are withdrawn from the sleeves 16. When this is effected the heads 19 of thel threaded bolts 18 are operated to draw the heads 21 of the bolts against the inner face of the part 14 to firmly hold the sleeve 16 and bars 14 in their relative position.
