INVALID BED.
Application filed May 22,
To all whom it may concern- Be it known that I, 'VVYArr W. ZAoHARY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pine Bluff, in the county of Jefterson and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Invalid Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to beds especially adapted for use by invalids.
An important object of this invention is to provide a bed having novel means whereby the patient may be temporarily raised to permit the mattress to be withdrawn and changed in its position on the bed, or possibly replaced by another mattress'without inconvenience or discomfort to the patient.
A further object is to provide an invalid b'ed having a mattress provided with a detachable portion or section which may be withdrawn at any time to provide an opening for the reception of a receptacle.
A further object is to provide an invalid bed having simple means whereby the adjustments may be made entirely byone attendant without going from one end of the. bed tothe other. f
A further object is to provide an invalid bed which is neat in appearance, of highly simplified construction and cheap to manufacture. r
Other objects and advantages 'of the invention will be apparent during the course ofthe following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts,
through the bed.
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the bed,
the view illustrating the means for raising Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view .1922. serial no. 562,669.
and the mattress 9 which is mounted thereon is provided with a detachable section 10 which may be removedtoprovide an openingll for the reception of an article 12. The member 12 may be co-extensive in depth with the mattress and therefore has its top approximately fiush with the top of the mattress. When the section 10 is in position in the-openingll the same may be held against displacement by a holding .strap 14, preferably secured as indicated at 15 to: one side wall of the opening 11 and the other end of the strap is provided with an attaching hookfor member 16 adapted to be'engaged with a suitableholding member, 17 arranged at the other side of the ,opening -When thestrap 1 1 is extended across the outer end of the section 10 the section is securely held against displacement and the weightof the, patient cannot force the section 10 laterally. It will be observed that the outer end of the section 10 is pro-v vided with a hand strap 1-9.by means of which the section may be withdrawn or inserted. r
As illustrated in Figure 1 a patient supporting sheet 20 extends longitudinally of the bed at'a point above the mattress and is provided at its ends with hems for the reception of attaching bars or rods The connecting bars or rods 21 have them ends directed laterally to provide attaching hooks 22 which are received inqloops 23 formed at the upper corners of the sheet supporting frames generally designated by numeral 24. The end me'mb'ers'lof the sheet supporting frames 24 are designated by the numerals f 25 and are provided intermediate their ends with loops 27. A I
The loops 27 are mounted on transversely extending pivot pins or bars 28 permanently carried by the members 25 of the sheet supporting frames constitute levers, the upper ends of which have connection with the transversely extending bars or rods 21. It might be stated that the hooks 22 arecdetaehably received in ends of the bed., Theend the loops 23 and the bars 21 may therefore be disconnected when it is desired to detach the sheet. The levers 25 of each sheet supporting frame are formed from the same length of metal and the loops 23 are joined by the connecting portion 29 arranged slightly in advance of the attaching bar 21.
As illustrated in Figure 3 the lower portions of the levers 25 are provided with loops or eyes 30 to which lower connecting bars or rods 33 are joined through the medium of attaching hooks 34. The intermediate portions of the lower rods 33 of which there are two are formed with eyes or loops 36 which are mounted on an operating shaft 37.
Figures 1 and 2 illustrate that the operating shaft 37 is extended longitudinally of the bed between the longitudinal edges of: the same and one end of the shaft is provided with holding members 88 in the nature of nuts. The other end of the shaft 37 is exteriorly threaded for engagement with a hand wheel 40 by means of which the sheet 20 may be tensioned when desired. It will be observed that the hand. wheel 40 urges a collar or sleeve 41 into engagement with the adjusting loops 36 and thereby moves the lower portions of the sheet supporting frames together. When the hand wheel 40 is turned in one direction the distance between the holding members 38 and the collar 41 is decreased so that the sheet 20 is tensioned.
When the member 20 is thus tensioned the patient is raised from the mattress so that the mattress may be withdrawn laterally and replaced in a different position so that the patient will be rendered more comfortable. In carrying out the invention the nut 38 may be adjusted on the shaft 37 for varying the distance between the rod portions of the sheet supporting frame.
Figure 4: illustrates that the lower portions of the levers 25 have connection with inclined braces 50 the intermediate portions of which are looped as indicated at 51 and are slidable on the shaft 37. The lower rod 38 adjacent the handle is urged into engagement with the collar 4-1 by means of a coil spring 5 1- confined between the washer 55 and a retaining pin 56, the said retaining pin being extended through the shaft 37.
Of course, the sheet 27 which is constructed from a suitable stout material is provided with an opening 58 in alignment with the opening 11.
In operation the patient in the bed may be raised slightly by simultaneously increasing the distance between the attaching bars 21. This permits the mattress to be freely removed and reinserted in a changed position, or if desired a new mattress may be substituted. When the strap 14 is extended from the detachable section 10 and secured to the member 17 the entire mattress and the sec tion 10 may be removed as a unit and the section will not drop out.
I With reference to the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be apparent that an invalids bed constructed in accordance with this invention will permit the member 12 to be placed in position without inconvenience on the part of the operator, and when the said member is in position it is entirely concealed.
It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that such minor changes in atrangement and construction of parts may be made as will remain within the spirit of the invention and the scope of what is claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. An invalid'bed comprising a head, and a foot, pairs of levers arranged at the ends of the bed, pivot rods extending through the intermediate portions of said levers and connected to the head and foot of the bed, attaching bars having their ends detachably connected to the upper portions of said levers, a sheet connected to said attaching bars, upper and lower bars connected to the ends of said levers, the intermediate portions of said lower bars being formed with loops, a shaft extending through said loops, a holding member threaded on one end of said shaft and means arranged on the other end of said shaft and forming a means to swing said levers and to tension said sheet.
2. An invalid bed comprising a head, and a foot,- pairs of levers arranged at the ends of the bed, pivot rods extending through the 105 intermediate portions of said levers and connected to the head and foot of the bed, attaching bars having their ends detachably connected to the upper portions of said levers, a sheet connected to said attaching 110 bars, upper and lower bars connected to the ends of said levers, the intermediate portions of said lower bars being formed with loops,
a shaft extending through said loops, a holding member threaded on one end of said 115 shaft and means arranged on the other hand of said shaft and forming a means to swing said levers, and bracing devices connected to the lower ends of said levers and having loops slidable on said shaft.
