Description
A. M. KENNY ILLUMINATED RECEPTACLE Filed June 9, 51
HHHHI Dec. 22, 1931 Patented Dec. 22, 1931 UNITED STATES ALFRED M. KENNY, on OS-HAWA, ONTARIO, CANADA ILLUMINATED nncnrrnoiln r Application filed June 29, 1931. Serial No. 541,653.
The invention relates to improvements in receptacles of the class employed on the street for housing cans for disposal of refuse.
The invention has for its object the provision of a receptacle of this nature, in which a chamber is provided for a refuse can. Encompassing compartments are supplied in which advertising matter is displayed by a source of illumination and in conjunction with the advertising matter name-plates are provided for displaying the name of the particular street on which the receptacle is placed.
Referring to the drawings; Figure 1 is a side elevation of the receptacle.
Figure 2 is a rear elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a front view. a
Figure 4 is a vertical section taken on the line 1- 1 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a transverse cross section taken on the line 55 of Figure 1.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the figures F throughout the drawings.
The receptacle is preferably of a rectangular shape in plan and embodies a framework. This is composed of angle iron members 6 welded or otherwise secured together. The front walls 7 and the two sidewalls 8 are glassed in by one or more panes while the rear wall is composed of a door 9 that is retained in place by fitting its lower corners in keepers 10, 10 and securing its upper end by means of conventional catches 11, 11. A handle 12 serves to remove the door from the receptacle, which door may consist of a sheet metal plate or the like. The top 13 has a sloping front and rear surface as at 14 and 15, composed of panes of glass as at 16. The vertex of the top is provided with vertical panes as at 17. The
panes are suitably secured in the iron framework and the gables 18 of the top are preferably of sheet metal and provided with openings closed by doors as at 19.' Each door has a hinge 20 at its upper end and a pull 21 adjacent its lower edge by which it may be opened outwardly for the purpose of placing the refuse in the receptacle.
A chute 22 serves to guide the refuse to the mouth of the can 23 that rests upon the floor 24 and is removable through the door 9.
A partition 25 rests upon the floor 24 and composes a chamber 26 in which the can 23 iscontained. This partition also forms encompassing compartments at the front and two sides of the chamber 26 and is preferably compose-d of a substantial U-shaped member having integral flanges as at 27, 27 that are lodged behind the upright members 28, 28. The partition may be secured in place by conventional means in such a manner as to be readily removable through a door 9. To do this it is merely necessary 5 to press the sides 29,729 of the partition inwardly so as to clear the members 28, 28. The compartments 30 are fitted with sheets of glass bearing advertising matter.. and these sheets are vertically placed as at 31 adjacent to the outer walls 7 and 8 that are of glass. Electric lamps as at 32 illuminate the compartments in order to display the advertising matter.
The top of the receptacle is provided with a hood 33 of sheet metal that separates the can 23 from compartments 34 that are illuminated from a source of illumination as at 35.
' Sheets of glass or other transparent members as at 36 are disposed adjacent to the sloping surfaces of the top in order to bear advertising matter that is displayed by the source of illumination 35;
The vertical panes 17 may have glass plates as at 37 disposed in close proximity thereto and inscribed with the name of the, street upon which the receptacle is placed. The necessary illumination is sup-plied by electric lamps that are suitably connected in the receptacle at advantageous points forthe purpose of displaying various advertising matter.
It will be readily understood from the preceeding description that the invention not only provides a very attractive and sturdy receptacle for the can but also serves as an advertising medium for displaying advertisements which may be changed from time to time as occasion requires.
What I claim is A receptacle of the class described comprising a metal frame of rectangular shape in plan, a door forming a Wall for a side thereof, transparent members forming Walls for the remaining sides thereof, a substantially U-shaped partition having its ends fitted to the door side of the receptacle tocompose a chamber and a surrounding com- 9 Jartment said chamber bein accessible 5 C) through the door, and electric lamps disposed to illuminate the compartment in order to display advertising matter through the aforesaid panes.
Signed at Toronto, Ontario, the 18th day of June, 1931.
ALFRED M. KENNY.
