COMBINED TRASH AND GARBAGE CAN CONTAINER.
Application filed February 14, 1924.. Serial No. 692,751.
To all whom it may concern;
Be itknown that I, BnAn'Pn-aasorv, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, the city and county of Denver, and State of Colorado, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Combined Trash and Garbage Can Containers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This: invention relates to combined trash and garbage can containers. 7
In cities it is necessary, in orden to maintain the streets and yards clean and the air as pure as possible, to carefully place all trash or waste, as well as ashes, into containers provided with covers, and which are emptied from time to time by the proper city employees. It is even more essential that all garbage shall be carefully covered so as to prevent rats from feeding thereon and flies from breeding therein, and thereby maintaining sanitary conditions.
Where cans provided with ordinary covers are used for trash and garbage, it frequently happens that the covers get lost or; so badly bent that it, is impossible to put them on the cans, with the result that the garbage cans of this type are generally left uncovered.
It is the object of this invention to provide a simple and substantial container that shall have two separate compartments, one for the trash can and the other for the garbage can. Each compartment has a hinged cover, which fits the top and rests upon the upper edge thereof, and also on the upper edge of the can. This cover has an opening of somewhat smaller diameter than that of the can. A second cover is hinged to each of these covers and serves to close the opening therein. When trash or garbage is to be placed in the cans the last-named cover only is raised, but when the cans are to be removed, both of the covers must be raised.
My invention can be most clearly described and most readily understood when reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which the preferred embodiment thereof is shown, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a top view of my improved container with portions thereof broken away;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the container showing the same with the covers closed;
Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 33, Fig. '2; and
Fig. 4 is a section taken on line t-fti, Fig. 1.
My improved container comprises a framework having four vertical members 1, 2, 3 and 1, the lower ends of which form legs. The four vertical members are connected near their top by an iron frame memher 5 and near their lower ends by an angle iron frame member 6. Legs?) and 4 are connected by transversely arranged angles 7 and 8. Bars 9 extend from the frame member 6 to the frame member 7 and cooperate with the transverse bars 10 to form a support for the trash can 11. Secured to frame members 5 and 6 are sheet iron plates 12 which form the sides of the container. An angle 13 connects the opposite sides of the sides 12 in the manner shown in Fig. 3. Bars 14: connect angles 8 and13 and form a. support for the garbage can 15. A fiat bar 16 extends from one side to the other directly over the legs 3 and 1. A cover 17 extends from the edge of the bar 16, to which it is connected by means of hinges 17, and covers the top of the compartment containing the trash can. The edges of this cover are bent at right angles to the main portion thereof as indicated by numeral 18. This flange extends do-wn over the sides of the container in a manner obvious from the drawing. Cover 17 has an opening 19 which is. somewhat smaller than the diameterof the trash can and this is covered by a flat cover 20 which is connected by hinges 21. When trash is to be placed in can 11, the cover 20 is opened and the trash introduced through the opening 19, and when the can is to be removed for emptying, cover 17 as well as cover 20, are raised. The compartment containing the garbage can is provided with covers like those just described and differing therefrom in size only.
Where the conditions are such that greater capacity is required or where the container is to be used in connection with a double house, the container can be made into two compartments for trash cans and two compartments for garbage cans. As this is merely a. matter of duplication, it has not been shown. Where the larger can is used for the reception of ashes, it Will. tend to keep the garbage from freezing.
From the above, it will be apparent that I have produced a container that is of simple construction and of neat appearance, which is especially adapted to receive and hold trash and garbage cans in such a manner that the contents thereof Will not be exposed, and which is so constructed that the material can be readily introduced into cans and the cans readily removed from the container.
Having now described my invention, What I claim as new is:
A combined trash and garbage container comprising a casing having an oblong horizontal section, supports upon which the easing rests, means for supporting a trash container and garbage can, a member extending transversely of the container at a point intermediate its ends, tivo cover members hingedly connected to the transverse memher, one extending from each side thereof, each of said covers having an opening adapted to register Wit-l the opening in the can located therebeneath, and auxiliary covers hingedly connected to the first-mentioned covers and adapted to close the opening in the latter.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
BEAR PEAR-SON.
