Patented Dec. 27, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LoIs A. WEBER, or SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ann 'rACoB ALLAN' WEBER, or CLEVELAND HEIHTs, o'HIo GASKET BIER Application filed september 17, 1930. serial No. 482,485.
This invention relates to improvements in casket trucks or biers and particularly to the collapsible or foldable type of wheeled bier. It is highly desirable that devices of this 5 kind be made collapsible in order that they may be readily moved from place to place and conveniently handled When not in use. 1t is also hivhly desirable to enhance the appearance by the use of illuminated panels,
and still maintain the advantageous feature of collapsibility.
One of the objects of the present invention, therefore, is to provide a collapsible bier, which may be illuminated in such manner as to present an attractive appearance from either one or both sides thereof, and to provide an arrangement wherein the decorative panels may be readily removed and replaced so as to utilize any one of a num- 0 ber of diiferent designs.
The preferred means for carrying out these objects is shown in the drawing, wherein Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a device embodying our invention; Fig. 2 is a front ele- 5 vation thereof; Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the structure when folded for transportation, and Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
The collapsible bier to which we have ap- 0 plied our invention is shown as comprising a main vertical member 10, which is in the nature of a hollow rectangular structure having relatively narrow top and bottom rails 11 and 12, and connecting panels 13 and U 14. Wing members 15 are hinged to the ends of the main member and are arranged to coact therewith when extended in V-form, as is shown in Fig. 1, to support a load. Casters 16 are attached to the main member and to the wing members respectively, so that the device is readily transportable either in eX- tended or folded position.
We prefer to provide illumination for the bier by utilizing a translucent panel on either one or both sides of the main member and by placing the illuminating means, such as an electric lamp 20, Within the member and directly back of the translucent panel. In Fig. 4, we have shown the bier with the the panel 14 comprising a door for providing access to the lamp. The translucent panels preferably comprise ornamental designs, which are made from stained glass or paint-A ed fabric, but other forms of translucent material may be used to produce satisfactory results.
To provide adequate illumination and at the same time to facilitate the portability of the apparatus, we prefer to introduce the current carrying leads 21 into the hollow member, through the bottom rail 12 thereof, and to use a post or other support `22, of sufficient height to place the lamp in the most elfective position withreference to the design on the translucent panel.
An advantage of our invention is the fact that we have obtained a very attractive and ornamental bier, and yet have retained the collapsible and portable characteristics, which are so importa-nt in a device of this character. Furthermore, we have provided removable panels, thus permitting the use of various designs.
We claim:
In a collapsible bier comprising a central translucent panel member and two pairs of wing members hinged thereto and adjacent the edge thereof, said central panel having top, bottom and end rails, a lamp support on one of the rails and a lamp carried by the support and disposed behind the translucent panel.
In testimony whereof, we hereunto affix our signatures. V
LOUIS A. WEBER. JACOB ALLAN WEBER.
