Q Be it known that I, HENRY J. TRAH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stands, of

My invention relates to improvements in stands,- especially a newspaper and magazine stand such as is commonly found at street corners and other places where newspapers and magazines or the like, are displayed for sale, and has for its principal object the rovision of an improved con-- struction of this character which will be highly eificient in use.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a metal stand which will stand rough weathering and one which is provided with a compartment wherein a surplus of newspapers or the-like, can be stored.

A still'further object is the provision of i a canopy which can be readily mounted in position to protect the newspapers or the like, displayed on the stand, from rain or snow.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, B indicates the counter of the stand C which comprises a compartment D in which a surplus supply of newspapers or the like, are stored. The

compartment D comprises upright angular supporting members 10 which are enc 'osed by the walls 11 of the compartment, said walls in'this instance being formed of sheet metal and secured to the upright members 10 by suitable bolts 11, as shown, or rivets.

The bottom wall 12 of the compartment is also formed of sheet metal and joined to the rear wall of the compartment by bending the edge 13in themanner shown in Fi 4. there being a recess formed alon the iot tom edge 14 of the rear wall 11 or the recept1on of the depending flange 14 of the edge 13, by bending the edge 14 in the manner llustrated in ig. 4. The front edge portion 15 of the counter B and the front edge portion 15 of the bottom wall 12 are bent in the manner shown in Fig.4, the depending portion 16 of the edge portion 15 and the upwardly extending portion 16 of the edge portion 15 serves as stops for doors 17' and 18. As shown in Fig. 4 the outer edge portion 15 of the counter B projects beyond the front wall of the compartment and is provided with a depending flange 19, the purpose of which is to prevent rain or the like from finding an en trance into the compartment B. The doors 17 and 18 are each formed of sheet metal having their edges 20 and 21 bent in the manner illustrated in Figs. 4 and 8, forming lateral flanges 20. The outer side flanges 20 of the door passes into vertical recesses 22 formed by bending the side edges of the front wall around the door opening in the manner illustrated in Fig. 8, when the doors are in closed position. The flange 20 formed adjacent the inner side edge of the door 18 passes intoa vertical recess 23 formed along the adjacent side edge of the door 17 as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. This construction of the door is such that the which are secured to the walls 11 of the compartment by suitable bolts 25, as shown, or rivets. The outer side edge 26 of the shelf 24 is reenforced by an angular member 27 set inwa recess formed along the outer edge of the shelf by bending the said ed e in the manner shown in Fig. 4.

The counter 28 is also fixedly secured to a back 29. The back 29 is joined to the rear wall 11 and the counter B by bending the bottom edge thereof to form adjacent recesses 31 and 32, as illustrated in Fig. 7, the inner recesses 32 receive the upper edge of the rear wall 11 and the adjacent recesses 31 receive a depending flange 33 formed along the side edge of the counter B, said upper edge of the rear wall 11 and depending flange 33 being fixedly secured 1D the recess 'b suitable bolts 33, as shown.

The side e ges of the back 29 are reenforced by an -lar members 34 and the top ed e thereof is reenforced by a narrow metafiic plate 35 over which the top edge is bent as at 36, said back being secured to said reenforcing members by suitable bolts as shown.

From the construction so far set forth I provide a stand provided with sufiicient counter space for the displaying of newspapers or the like and also provide a compartment wherein a surplus of newspapers or the like can be stored. The stand as set forth is made of sheet metal which will stand rough usage and rough weathering,

a0 a feature which is of great value over the present news stands which are now in use.

To rotect the newspapers and other articles, 'splayed on the stand for sale, I provide a canopy E which can be readily adjusted in position when a desired. The

'cano y E is preferably formed of water proo material and comprises atop 37 and side walls 38. The front edges 39 'of the canopy are provided with a wide hem to permit the assage of supporting rods 40 and 41. e upright supporting rod 41 is in the form of a tubular member and I -when mounted in position is joined to the horizontal member 40, which is also tubular, by an angular shaped tie pin 43, the ends of said tie pin fastened into the supporting members 40 and 41 as shown. The top 37 of the canopy is supported by support ing members 44 which are each provided with a ring portion 45 at one end for the reception of the an ular tie member 43. The 0 posite ends of the members 44 are provi ed with projections 46, which are smaller in diameter than the said supports and are adapted to pass through openings 47 formed adjacent the top edge of the back 29. The tubular supports 40 and 41 are also provided with projections 48 which pass through openings formed adjacent the outer corners of the counter B. By this construction the canopy E is supported above the counter B and the shelf 28 and extends outwardly a suflicient distance from the front edge of the counter B so as to shield the newspapers and articles displayed on the stand from rain or the like. The side Walls 38 are releasably secured in position through the medium of hook members 49 secured to the side wall portions of the canopy and which are arranged and adapted to pass through openings formed in the back 29 and end walls 30. The end 49' of the top 37 of the canopy E is provided with grommets 59 which receive the projections 46 carried by each of the supports 44. This arrangement retains the top of the canopy taut preventing the supporting members 44 from becoming disengaged from the openings 47.-

I provide means for locking the doors 17 and 18, said means comprising a hasp 50 which is carried by the side edge 26 of the shelf 24 and passes through registering openings 51 formed adjacent the adjoining side'edges of the doors. An opening 52 is formed in the hasp adjacent the outer end thereof for the reception of a padlock, not shown. In addition to the means for looking the doors, I also provide locking means for retaining the doors closed when the padlock, not shown, is removed from the hasp 50. This means comprises a lever 53 carried by a handle 54, adjacent the inner side edge of the door 18. Pivotally connected adjacent the opposite ends of the lever 53 are lock bars 55 which are slidably supported by hearing members 56 carried by the door 18. Slidably journalled in the bearings 57 carried by the door 17 on the inner side thereof are lock pins 58.

The lower lock bar 55 and lock'pin 58 are adapted to pass into openings formed in the bottom 12 of the compartment D and the upper lock bar 55 and the lock pin 58 are arrested by the depending portion 16 when in locked position.

By the construction of the news stand as herein set forth, I provide a stand constructed of metal which is light in structure to facilitate moving the stand from place to place as well as providing a stand which is economical in manufacture and eflicient in use.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of the construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A stand comprising a counter; a storage compartment; a second compartment arranged over said counter, there being grooves along the lower edge of the rear wall of said second compartment for the reception of the'adjacent edge of said counter and the rear wall of said compartment, a second counter over said second compartment; and a removable canopy arranged over said counter and said second compartment, substantially as described.

2. A display stand including a framework of angular members enclosed by wall portions to provide a storage compartment, a counter over said compartment, a wall portion at the rear of said counter and extending upwardly therefrom, there being adjacent grooves at the lower edge of said wall portlon for the reception of the adjacent edge of said counter and rear wall por tion of said storage compartment, substan-.

tially as described.

3. A display stand including a framework of angular members enclosed by wall portions to provide a storage compartment, a counter over said com artment, a wall portion at the rear of sai counter and extending upwardly therefrom, there being adjacent grooves at the lower edge of said wall portion for the reception of the adjacent edge of said counter and rear wall portion of said storage compartment, and'a re'- movable canopy comprising side and top walls arranged over said counter, substantially as described.

4. A stand including a storage compartment having a door opening, doorsfor said opening, a counter above said storage compartment, the outer side edge of said counter being extended outwardly beyond the front wall of said counter and then inwardly and downwardly to serve as a stop for said doors, a Wall at the rear of said counter and extending upwardly therefrom, w

the lower edge portion of said wall being provided with a jacent rooves for the reception of the adjacent e ge of said counter and the rear wall of said compartment, and

side walls of waterproof material arranged over said counter, there being a hem formed on one edge ofeach of said side walls and saidtop wall; tubular members passing through said hems and detachably secured together; and reduced portions on one end of said tubular members adapted to be inserted in openings formed in said counter and said wall at the rear of said counter, substantially as described.

6. A stand of the class described comprising a display counter; a wall at the rear of said counter and extending upwardly therefrom; a canopy comprising integral top and side walls of waterproof material arranged over said counter, there being a hem formed on one edge of each of said side walls and said top wall; tubular members passin through said hems and detachably secure 'to ether; reduced portions on one end of sai tubular members adapted to be inserted in openings formed in said counter and said wall at the rear of said counter, and hook members carried by said canvas and adapted to be inserted in openin s formed in said wall and said counter, su stantially as described.
