Description
Dec. 15, 1931. B. H. WHITE 1,836,636
FASTENER Filed sept. 2e, 1927 MMM verizo Patented Dec. 15, 1931 PATENT OFFICE BIRDORA H. WHITE, OF CHICAVGO, ILLINOIS FASTENER Application led September 26,r 1927. Serial No. 222,044.
This invention relates to fasteners and more especially to a fastener adapted to be connected to an article of wearing apparel and used for detachably connecting a sup- V porter, garter, tape or the like thereto.
The invention hasas one of its objects to provide a simple but eticient device of this character which may be conveniently associated with a garment, as for instance, by locating the same in a pocket such as a hem and which is so designed as to distribute the pull of the supporter throughout a relatively large area of the garment and also to provide a device of this character so constructed as to prevent the same from turning or rotating within the pocket or becoming otherwise dislaced.
p Another object of this invention is to provide means for conveniently connecting the end of the garter or other supporter thereto and to provide means of this character which may be quickly and economically manufactured, which may be assembled with facility and which will positively'grip and hold the elastic tape or non-elastic tape of the garter or other supporter.
These several objects of this invention as well as others and also the novel details of construction will be made more apparent as this description proceeds, especially when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a perspective view of a fastener constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the device.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary elevational view of a garment and a supporter showing one application of this invention.
Referring now particularly to the drawings and more especially to Figures 1 to 4 inclusive, it will be noted that my improved Afastener consists essentially of a frame member 10 which as illustrated may be conveniently formed from a single piece of wire bent to form a central body portion or fastener supporting portion 11 provided with a pair of spaced side portions 12 which, as clearly illustrated are inclined in opposite directions but lie in the same'plane. rlhe frame' member V10 is formed with extensions at the ends thereof which extensions are of substantially the same width or height as the body of the frame member and which lie in '60 the same plane as the center portion of the frame member. These extensions, which are indicated generally by the reference character 13 may be conveniently formed by bending the Wire in a plurality of reversely extending curves or loops such-as indicated at 14 and' terminating these extensionsin closed loops 15. By terminating the ends of the extensions in loops 15 the'ends of the wire piece, from which the frame member is bent, will be prevented from catching or hooking into the garment which would obviously be objectionable. Y
The extensions 13, which obviously maybe made of any desired length, provide means `'I5 for distributing the load upon the garter or hose supporter throughout a large area of the garment and obviously the frame member 10, as a whole, may be curved longitudinally sok as to conform to the curvature of the body'of v80 the wearer when, for instance, it islocated itls the lower edgeof a corset, girdle or the By arranging the extensions 13 in the same p general plane as the central portion of the Vframe member and by making these extensions of substantially the same width as the frame member broad fiat portions are provided which extend vertically in the pocket of the garment with which they are 'asso- 90 ciated to thus prevent any rotative or other displacement of the fastener with reference to the garment. l'
The end of the garter or supporter' 16 is secured to the frame 10 by means of a clamp- 95 ing member indicated generally by the reference character 17. This clamping member consists 'of a pair of cross-bars 18 and 19 and jthe clamping member is preferably formed from a single piece of wire which is first bent to form the cross-bar 18 and then looped around the portions 12 of the frame member as indicated at 20 to thus slidably mount the clamping member upon the frame member. The other horizontal cross-bar 19 is formed by the two ends of the wire, these ends terminating in lateral extensions or points 21 which are adapted to bite into the elastic or other material of which the garter or supporter is formed to thus positively grip the same and prevent accidental disengagement thereof. As seen most clearly in Figure t the supporter 16 is threaded between the bars'18 and 19 then around over the top of these two bars and between the clamping member and the central portion 11 of the frame member. In this manner any pull upon the supporter tends to cause the pointed projections 21 to engage the supporter more firmly and owing to the fact that the supporter is wrapped around the pair of bars 18 and 19 any pull thereon will tend to press these two cross members together, they being formed of inherently resilient material, to thus clamp the end of the supporter between the bars 18 and 19.
As seen from Figure 3 the fastener ma be conveniently connected to a garment suoi as fragmentarily illustrated at 22 by locating the same in a poclret 23 which may conveniently be a part of the hem of the garment. Thus the stitching 24 of the hem is omitted at the point indicated by the reference character 25 to thus provide an opening for the pocket 23 through which the frame member may be inserted whereupon it will be lodged upon the bottom of the pocket with the wide extensions 13 thereof extending vertically therewithin. The bottom of the pocket, in an arrangement of this character, will be provided with an opening 26 through which the garter or supporter 16 extends. Vhen it is necessary to replace the supporter 16, as for instance, when the elastic therein becomes lworn the frame member may be withdrawn through the opening 25 of the pocket and a new supporter attached thereto.-
With this invention it is possible to detachably connect the garter or supporter to the garment and at the same time experience the same comfort and security that is customary with the permanently attached supporters. The advantages of a device of this character over permanently attached supporters are obvious.
In Figures 5 to 8 inclusive there is illustrated modified forms of frame members 10 in which the extensions 13 are of different configuration but in each instance the results are identical with the form previously described in detail. It will be obvious that the wire may be bent into any desired configuration to form these extensions and also that these extensions may be of any desired length.
Therefore, reservation is made to make such changes as may come within the purview of the accompanying claims.
What I claim as my invention is:

9. In a fastener of the class described, a supporting frame and a clamping member mounted thereon, said clamping member con sisting of a single piece of wire bent to form upper and lower cross bars looped around spaced portions of said frame to slidably mount said elampin member thereon, said wire being further ent to provide projections intermediate the length of one of said cross bars and in the plane of said frame.
