IMPROVEMENT IN MEASURING-RULES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 183,608, dated October 24, 1876; application filed August 2, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMEEY D. WATER- BURY, ot' Mason'City, in' the county of Cerro Gordo and State of Iowa, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Meas'- tiring-Rules; and I do hereby declare the follow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification. n
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of acombination and extension rule, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, which fully illustrates my invention, A and B represent two bars or pieces of suitable dimensions, which may be of Wood, lined on all sides with brass, or of any other suitable material. The bottom piece A is provided at one end with a square metal loop, C, through which the top piece B is passed. This top piece has, near the other end, on the other side, a circular recess, in which is placed a metal loop or clasp, D, and through this clasp the lower piece A passes, as shown.
From the center of the clasp D passes a screw, a, up through the piece B, anda washer, b, placed on the same, when a thumb-nut, Gr, is screwed on the screw to tighten the parts together.

The parts can be set to form any bevel desired, and may be used also as a yard-measure, lumber-gage, lumbermans measure, and other uses.
It is simple, cheap, and durable, and not liable to get out of order.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Ihe combination of the pieces A and B, stationary clasp C, and swiveled clasp D, with screw a and thumb-nut Gr, -substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
