JOHN SKATES, OF TRINIDAD, COLORADO.
SQUARE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN SKATES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trinidad, in the county of Las Animas and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Squares, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawmg.
This invention relates to squares and the principal object of the same is to provide an improved means for mounting the vial of a level in the square and also to provide an improved means for mounting the blade of the square.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side view of the square. Fig. 2 is an end view Fig. 3 is an edge view. Fig. A is a longitudinal section through the square. Fig. 5 is a side view from the side opposite Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a View in longitudinal section taken at right angles to Fig. A. Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view along the line 77, in Fig. 5. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the socket piece mounted in one end of the square. Fig. 9 is a perspective view of a bolt on which the blade is pivotally mounted. Fig. 10 is a transverse sectional view through one end of the square.
This invention comprises a body portion 1, which is provided with a longitudinally extending slot in which a blade 2 provided with a slot 3 is mounted. A recess 4 is formed in one side and face of the body and extends to the slot in which the blade 2 is mounted. A plate 5 covers the recess and rests upon seats 6 where it is secured by means of the screws 7 The plate 5 is provided with a perforated lug 8 which extends into the recess A and is also provided with openings 9 and 10 for a purpose to be here inafter brought out. A cradle 11 provided with an end bearing 12 is placed in the recess with the end bearing 12 extending through the opening formed in the lug 8 and into a socket formed in the body portion 1. The opposite'end of' the cradle is provided with a threaded opening through which a screw 13 passes, the lower end of the screw fitting into a socket 14. A spring 15 is mounted upon the screw and contacts with the cradle 11 and plate 5 so that the Specification of Letters Patent.

cradle will be held in an adjusted position. A vial is seated in the cradle and held therein by means of cement, plaster-paris, or any other desired means and is viewed through the openings 9 and 10. The vial is kept parallel with the longitudinal axis of the body portion by adjusting the cradle with the screw 13. It will thus be seen that if the plate carrying the vial becomes loose and get-s out of alinement with the longitudinal axis of the body portion that the cradle can be adjusted to bring the vial into alinement.
A metal piece 17 is mounted upon one end of the body portion and is secured in place by means of the screw 18. The piece 17 and the body portion are provided with a trans versely extending opening 19 through which a gage 20 passes and with a transversely extending opening 21 positioned at right angles to the opening 19 and in alinement therewith through which a set screw 22 is threaded to engage the gage 20 and holds the same in an adjusted position. A longitudinal extending opening 23 is formed in the body portion and terminates in an enlarged outer end 24: in which a U-bolt 25 is positioned with one end passing through an opening formed in the end piece 17 A gage 26 similar to the gage 20 is passed through the U-bolt 25 and into the opening 23. The gage 26 is held in an adjusted position by the thumb screw 27. The opposite end of the body portion is provided with a reduced end having an opening 28 formed transversely therethrough and intersecting the slot in which the blade 2 is mounted and in alinement with the slot 3 formed in the blade. The major portion of the opening 28 is of greater diameter than the'remaining portion and a socket piece 29 provided with an opening 30 having an enlarged outer portion 31 is mounted upon the reduced end of the body portion with the opening 30 registering with the enlarged end portion of the opening 28. The socket piece is provided with a tongue 32 which has a lug 33 formed upon its inner face which fits in a recess 34: formed in the bodyportion. The outer end of the socket piece is provided with a lip 34* which rests upon a beveled face 34c at the end of the reduced end of the body portion. A wearing plate 35 is mounted upon the opposite face of the reduced end and is secured in place by means of screws 36 which enter the body portion through the shoulder 37. The plate 35 is provided with an opening which registers with the smaller end of the opening 28.
A. screw 38 having a head 39 and a rectangular shoulder 40 is passed through the openings formed through the socket piece, the body portion, and wearing plate and has its head 39 fitting in the enlarged outer portion 31 said body portion being provided with a large circular opening 42 allowing said shoulder to rotate and constituting a pocket therefor. The shoulder 40 passes through the slot 3 and the screw is rotatably secured in place by means of the wing nut 41. The head 39 of the screw is provided with a scale upon its-outer face so that the angle of the blade 2 can be determined. order to change the angle of the blade, the wing nut tl is unscrewed and the blade moved in the desired direction. This turns the screw 38 and the head 39 is, of course,
turned and the dial indicates the amount of change in the angle of the blade.
IVliat I claim as my invention is In the square of the character described, a body portion provided with a longitudinal slot, a blade pivotally mounted within said slot, said body portion being provided with a socket, of a plate mounted upon said body portion provided with an inwardly extending lug fitting in said socket in said body, said lug being adapted to engage said blade oif center and a screw for engaging said plate for holding said lug in binding engagement with the blade for preventing accidental removal of said blade from said body.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN SKATES.
