CARPENTERS SQUARE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 13,1913.
Application filed July 23, 1910. Serial No. 573,468.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LBENURI O. SWEUM, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Hamar, in the county of Eddy, State of North Dakota, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Carpenters Squares; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to carpenters squares.
The object of the invention resides in the construction of a carpenters square in which the tongue and blade are so arranged and connected that they may be moved at will so as to be disposed at different angles to each other.
A further object of the invention resides in providing means for effecting the angular adjustment of the blade and tongue and for positively maintaining said adjustment without providing any independent means for locking the blade and tongue against relative movement.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of means for indicating the various angular adjustments of the blade and tongue as they are attained.
Another object of the invention resides in forming a number of the elements integral to provide an efficient device consisting of few parts and which can be manufactured at a minimum cost.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views; and in which,
Figure 1 is a plan view of a fragment of a carpenters square constructed in accordance with the invention, the tongue and blade being shown in the usual angular relation of 90; Fig. 2, a view similar to Fig. l with the tongue and blade disposed at an angle of 120; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and, Fig. 1, a section on the line 4-1 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates the blade of the square and B the tongue which is pivotally connected with the outer end of the blade A as at 10. The meeting ends of the blade A and the tongue 13 are beveled at an angle of 15 degrees to provide faces which are adapted to lie against each other when the tongue 13 is in its normally closed position or at right angles to the blade A.
Formed in the blade A and opening through the beveled end thereof adjacent the beveled end of the tongue B is an elongated arcuate recess or bore 11 having the pivot 10 as its center. An arcuate groove 12 is formed in one side of the blade A and opens through the beveled end of said blade adjacent the beveled end of the tongue B; said groove 12 being disposed between the recess or bore 11 and the pivot 10, said pivot constituting the center about which the groove extends. Projecting from the beveled end of the tongue B adjacent the beveled end of the blade A and mounted for travel in the. groove 12 during the move-- ment of the tongue B on the pivot 10 is an arcuate guide 13, while an arcuate screw thread rod or member 1 1 also projects from the beveled end of the tongue B and is mounted for travel in the recess 11 during the movement of the tongue upon the pivot 10. Extending transversely through the blade A adjacent the beveled end thereof and intersecting the recess or bore 11 is an aperture 15 and disposed in said aperture is a thumb nut 16 through which the screw threaded member 14: is adapted to travel.
From this construction it will be apparent that by rotating the thumb nut 16 in one direction the angle of distribution of the blade and tongue may be increased beyond 90 while the rotation of said nut in the opposite direction will tend to return the tongue and blade to an angular disposition of 90.
The face of the blade A is suitably scaled adjacent the outer side of the guide 13 for the purpose of indicating the increased angular adjustment of the tongue B, the coincidence of the end of the guide with the desired scale indicating the adjustment.
\Vhat is claimed is In a carpenters square, a blade having a beveled end, a tongue having a beveled end hinged to the beveled end of the blade, the beveled ends of the tongue and blade being fitted snugly together when the blade and tongue are at right angles to each other, said tongue having an arcuate adjusting screw thereon, said blade having a recess which entirely incloses and protects the free end of the arcuate adjusting screw, said recess be ing formed With an enlarged portion, a nut seated in the enlarged portion and engaging the adjusting screw in cooperative relation for forcing the beveled ends to swing on their hinged connection, the nut being cylindrical and knurled and of a less diameter than the thickness of the blade, so that it cannot contact With a plane solid surface, but may be easily rotated by contact with a thumb or finger of an operator.
