7 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosErH H. Porrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at "Seaside Heights, in the county of Ocean and State'of' New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments culiar and advantageous attachment hereinafter described and claimed.
Like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout, the several 15' views in the drawing, in which:
Figure 1 .is a plan view of an attachment constructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is'a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the attachment applied to a joiners square and showing the same positioned upon a piece of timber so that thetimbercanbe marked and cutfor use as a rafter..

Fig. 5 is a plan view of the attachment removed from the joiners square and showing the blade thereon adjusted to enable the attachment to be used as a square.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the numeral 1 designates the body of the attachment which is in the form of a rectangularly shaped bar having a top 2, bottom 3, sides 4, and ends 5, said body being formed from any suitable material of any thickness found desirable.
The body 1 has formed therein between its ends spaced and circular openings 6 opening out through the top 2 and bottom 3 of the body.
In each opening 6 is disposed a tube 7 contaminga sufficient quantity of fluid'to form a bubble in the tube so that the body can be used as a spirit level.
Extending longitudinally of the body 1 for a portion of its length near each end 1s an elongated slot 8 opening out through the top 2 and bottom 3 of the body. 1 Through each slot 8 passes the threaded shank 9 of a screw 10, the head 11 of which is adapted to bear against the bottgm 3 of the body, said shank having adjustably mounted on the portion thereof winch ex- ATTACHMENT FOR J OINERS SQUARES.

'Slots 13 extend longitudinally of the body from each end toward the middle thereof and open out through the sides 4. Said slots are of greater length than the slots 8 1n the body and are adapted to receive the blades 14 of the joiners square 15 shown in Figs. 3 and 4 in the drawing.

Stop members 21 and 22 are secured to the top 2 of the body 1 and arranged in such a manner that when the blade 18 is arranged at a right-angle to the body, one end thereof contacts with the stop 21 and limits the turn-- ing movement of the blade in one direction.
The stop member 22 is mounted on the top 2 in such a manner that when the blade 18 is arranged parallel with the body, one side edge of the blade will contact with the stop member 22 and limit the turning movement of the blade in one direction.
When it is desired to apply the attachment to a joiners square, the blades 14: of the square are positioned in the slots 13 and the wing-nuts 12 adjusted on the shanks 9 of the screws 10 to cause the body to grip the blades and retain the square connected therewith.
If it is desired to mark a piece of timber with the square so that the same can be cut and used as a rafter, a side 4 on the body 1 is positioned against a side of the piece of timher so that the meeting ends of the blades of the square will be positioned upon the timber as shown in Fig. 3 inthe drawing.
A rectangularly shaped blade 18 has A line is drawn on the piece of timber along one blade of the square so that when the timber is out along the line the end of the timber may be positioned on the Wall plate of a roof.
The attachment is now moved along the timber until the required length of the rafter has been reached and a line scribed on the timber along the other blade of the square.
When the timber has been out along the 7 last mentioned line, the end of the timber the shank 16 until the. blade 18 can be turned at an angle to the body 1 The nut. 20 is now tightened to hold the blade in adjusted position and the body 1 placed against the side of the timber to be marked.
The ends of the rafter are marked by means of the blades 14 of the square 15 and the timber, turned so that one end of the rafter may be marked by means of the blade :18 to correctly fit, against the hip rafter when out.
From the foregoing description of the attachment,-it will be seen that when the same is applied to a square, the required marks may be placed on a timber to enable the same to be cut and used as a jack rafter Without the additional use of bevels, or the like.
When the attachment has been disconnected from a j oiners square and it is desired to use the attachment as a square, the blade 18 is adjusted to lie at right-angles to the body 1 and when in this position the attachment may be used as a T-square if so desired.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed asnew, is:
An attachment for joiners squares comprising an elongated body of greater width than thickness having transversely disposed and longitudinally extending slots at, opposite sides of its transverse center and closed at their ends, and also. having slots extending between its oppositeedges-and to its ends and intersecting the first named slots, headed and threaded bolts extending through the first-named slots and also through and at right angles to the second-namedslots, wing nuts on said bolts, a threadedshank fixed to and extending laterally from one side of the body and spacedfrom one of the first-named slots, a wing nut on said shank, a lateral stop on said bodyside, at, the opposite side of the slot to said shank and; a second lateral stop on said side of the body, at the opposite side of the transverse slot to the first named stop, and a marking blade pivotally mounted on said shank and arranged in different positions to bring up against said steps.
