Application filed May 18,1916.
To all whom #may concern.'
Be it known that I, `JOHN lNoons', a citizen of the United Sta-tes, residing at Unity, in the .county of YValdo and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Levels; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in levels such as those used by carpenters, contractors and masons and the object thereof isl to provide a tool of this class so constructed as to permit it to be used for looating unknown points in strict horizontal alinement with certain known points.
With this general object in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction to be Vhereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter ,being supplemented by the accompanying drawing which constitutes a part of this ap plication and in which Figure 1 is a diagram showingthe use of the invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation thereof;
Fig. 3 is an edge view; and,
Fig. A is a vertical transverse section taken on plane of the line 1-11 of Fig. 2.
In specifically describing the construction shown in the drawing above briefly described, similar characters will be employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and reference will be herein made to the numerous elements by their respective indices. To this end the numeral 1 designates the improved level which consists of a bar 2 necessarily having a horizontal level glass 3 and preferably equipped with a vertical glass 4f. An aperture 5 is formed through the bar 1 near one end thereof and is elongated longitudinally of said bar while a transverse cavity 6 is provided in the edge of said bar remote from the level glass 3. Three transversely spaced bores extend through the bar 1 between the recess and cavity, the central bore 7 being of greater diameter than the other bores 8.
, A bolt 9 is mounted slidably in the bore 7 and normally extends across the aperture 5 into a socket 10 which is a continuation of said bore, a circular thumb nut 11 being threaded on said bolt and disposed rotatably in the aperture 5 whereby said bolt may be Specification of Letters Patent.

projected beyond the edge of the bar2 when ever, said bolt and its head serve as supporting means for one end of the level in a manner to be described. A pair of parallel arms 13 are formed integrally with and extend from the ends of the head 12 in parallel relation with bolt 9, said arms being received slidably in the bores 8 whereby said bolt 9 is not only held against rotation but the threads of said bolt will be prevented from binding against the wall of the bore 7.
The tool constructed as above described may be employed as an ordinary level when the bolt 9 land parts carried thereby are retracted, but is also applicable for the use depicted in Fig. 1. In this figure the line A designates an inclined surface upon which a point B is located, it being necessary to locate a point on the vertical line or surface C in strict horizontal alinement with point B. To accomplish this result one end of the level will be disposed on point B while the nut 11 will be adjusted to project the bolt 9 to such an extent as to elevate the other end of said level to an extent to position the entire device in a strictly horizontal position, this being 'determined by the glassB. The operator may now sight along the upper edge of the level and may thus locate a point I) on the line C. From this point he will measure downwardly a distance equal to the height of bar 1 and will thus locate the point E which will be in strict horizontal alinement with point B.
Ihe foregoing example is merely typical of one manner in which the improved tool may be employed, it being applicable to a wide range of uses and being therefore of use to workmen employed in numerous trades.
I claim:
A tool comprising a bar provided with a level glass, said bar having near one end an aperture opening through its opposed sides, and having in one edge a transverse cavity7 three parallel transversely spaced bores being formed through said bar between said` aperture and cavity, the central bore being of greater diameter than the others, a bolt mounted slidably in said central bore and adapted to project from the aforesaid bar, said bolt having at its outer end a cross head for reception in said cavity When said bolt is retracted, a pair of parallel arms extending from the ends of said cross head and received slidably in the remaining bores, and a circular nut threaded on Said bolt and disposed rotatably in said aperture.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
