UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TRUEMAN B. BARNES, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
SHlNGLlNG-GAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,371, dated November 30, 1897.
I Application filed March 13, l89'7- Serial No. 627,300. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, TEUEMAN B. BARNES, of Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shingling-Gages; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention contemplates certain new and useful improvements in shingling-gage attachments for hatchets or hammers.
The object of the invention is to provide an extremely simple and inexpensive device for gaging or regulating the courses of shingles, thus obviating the necessity of employing lines; or straight-edges, and one which is capable of being readily and easily adjusted for different courses.
A further object is to provide an attachment of this kind which will not affect or weaken the stability of the hammer or hatchet to which it is applied.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, showing a shinglinghatchet provided with my improved attachment. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of the gage attached.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a shingling-hatchet of ordinary construction having the blade at and handle a, the end of which is secured to the blade, as ordinarily.
B is the gage attachment. It consists of a longitudinally-adjustable member I) and a supportingpost b. The latter is in the form of a screw fitting in the end of the handle at, its projecting end or head 11* having a threaded hole 19 formed therein. The member b con sists of a rod I), having a flattened springy portion 29 and an externally-threaded portion b, which works in the threaded hole If. The free end of the portion b of this rod is formed with or to it is secured a head or flange O, the outer face of which is flat or smooth. In
/ the inner edge of this head or flange is a groove d, in which the straight-edge d of the hatchet-blade snugly fits. The rod can be adjusted to any desired point by holding the flanged end thereof away from the blade, the spring of the metal permitting this, and then turning said rod in itssupport. The flange 0 and the straight-edge d enable the operator to accurately gage each course of shingles relative to the course last laid.
The advantages of my invention are apparent to those skilled in the art to which it appertains.
It will be specially observed that my attachment is exceedingly simple and inexpensive and can be easily applied or removed and is capable of adjustment while attached to a hatchet.
Actual practice has demonstrated that with a hatchet or hammer provided with my improved gage attachment the laying and nailing of shingles can be quickly and accurately accomplished.
I claim as my invention- 1. A shingle-gage comprising a straightedge, a threaded support at right angles thereto, and a longitudinally-adjustable rod having a threaded portion engaging said threaded support, said rod being extended parallel with said straight-edge and having a widened end at right, angles to the latter, as set forth.
2. A shingling-gage consisting of a post, a rod adjustable longitudinally in said post by being rotated in said post and having a spring portion provided with a flange at one end, and a straight-edge parallel with said rod and at right angles to said flange which is held against said straight-edge by said spring portion, substantially as set forth. I
3. The combination with a hammer or hatchet having a blade provided with a straight-edge, of a screw or post projecting from said blade at right angles to said straight-edge and having a threaded hole therein, a rod having a thread workingin said date the latter against which it is held by said spring portion, substantially as set forth.
4:. The combination with a hatchet having In testimony whereof I have signed this a straight-edge, of a post, arod adjustablein specification in the presence of two subscribsaid post and extended parallel with said ing Witnesses. straight-edge, said rod having a flattened, 5 springy portion and a head on the end thereof Witnesses:
havingagroove toaccommodatesaid straight- O. F. WOLCOTT edge, substantially as set forth. A. S. CARTER.
