COMPASS.
Application tiled Gctoher 28, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER MILLIKEN, a citizen of the 4United States, and a resident of Perris, in the county of Riverside and State of California, have invented a new and improved Compass, of which the fol lowing is a full, clear, and eXact description.
My invention has for its object to provide a compass having a cross-head at an angle to the elongated body and with a guide slidable thereon, it being` possible to use the compass to produce loci and to divide angles.
The compass may be used to divide circles and arcs into any number of equal parts, and it may be used to describe all regular polygons. y
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following specification in which the preferred form of the invention is disclosed.
in the drawings similar reference characters denote similar parts in all the views, in which- Figure 1 is a plan View illustrating my invention; and
F ig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
By referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the compass is provided with an elongated body 5 to the end 6 of which there is secured a head 7, the head 7 being disposed at an angle to the body 5. Slidably mounted on the body 5 there is a slide 8 having an ear 9 extending beyond the body, in which there is an opening 10 for the The slide 8 is provided with a thumb screw 11, by which means the slide 8 may be secured against movement relatively to the body 5. head 7 there is an opening 12 for a guide point or pencil, the straight edge between the opening 10 and the opening 12 being disposed at right angles to the sides of the head 7.
rihe head 7 is divided in each direction from the opening 12 by parallel lines 13 which are disposed at right angles to the sides of the head 7, there being recesses 14: in the sides of the head 7 at the ends of the said lines 13. rihe body 5 may have a scale indicated thereon, the lines 15 of which are shown in the drawings.
rlhe compass may be used in a variety of ways; for instance, by turning the thumb screw 11 the slide 8 may be freed to slide on the body 5, and a guide point may then be inserted in the oriice 10 and be held in position on the drawing paper. A pencil point may then be held in the orifice 12 or one of the recesses 111-, and a guide point may be held in position at another recess 14 and may be moved along a straightor curved line, the body 5 sliding through the slide 8, and the pencil point indicating on the drawing paper a curve.
lHaving thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
in a compass, an elongated base, a head disposed across the base and secured thereto, the head having a guideand pencilholding hole positioned substantially in line with an edge of the elongated base, and a guide member slidable on the base and provided with a guideand pencil-holding hole disposed substantially at the said edge of the elongated base.
PETER MILLIKEN.
